Mexico

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. By supporting this artisan and her family, you’re also helping to preserve a living legacy.

A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Japan

Take your Japanese culinary experience to the next level in this workshop that allows you to participate in the preparation of a three-course, home-cooked meal. Far from the elaborate kaiseki meals that can be prepared only by chefs who have spent years honing their skills, Mami, a local chef and pâtissier, guides you in creating a simple yet heartfelt meal that you can learn to prepare in your own home using local, seasonal ingredients. The dishes include a vegetable dish, a fish dish, and a sushi; the actual ingredients will change with the seasons.

Set in a stylish century-old liquor shop, you’ll also enjoy several types of Japanese sake that will be paired with each course. As the entire experience is conducted only in Japanese, your host Eric, using his own background as a Kyoto-based chef, will explain the details throughout your time here. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the traditional Japanese approach to food, built on harmony, seasonality and visual presentation. 

This experience offers rare insight into everyday Kyoto cuisine. Chef Mami walks you through each step of a seasonal three-course meal, explaining how the average Kyoto resident selects ingredients, balances flavors, and adapts to what’s available. After choosing your welcome drink. Chef Mami will give a short talk on Japanese home cooking.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Eric has been living in Kyoto for over 22 years. He first came to Kyoto to complete his Master’s degree in Japanese Art History and has worked as a teacher and translator. Since 2022, he has been running a monthly pop-up restaurant, serving Cantonese-inspired dishes. Well connected with the art and culinary communities in Kyoto, he is eager to share this wonderful city with visitors.

Follow in the footsteps of a millennium of pilgrims on this guided day trip into the Catalan countryside, to Montserrat, the legendary monastery set high among jagged mountain peaks. Nestled within an imposing mountain range, Montserrat is a central symbol of Catalan religious life, known especially for the Black Madonna. You’ll then travel onward by cable car, which offers wide panoramic views, arriving at the monastery to visit the throne of Our Lady of Montserrat and explore the monastic complex. At the end of the day, you’ll return to Barcelona by private transport.

Bodega Visit and Tasting

Marta recommends leaving the private transport aside for the final stretch. This is so you can take the cable car from the base of Montserrat up to the monastery, which is located 720 meters above sea level. The cable car offers a truly stunning panoramic view of the surrounding landscape not available via any other method.

Once you've arrived, you'll enter the Cathedral and get to approach the throne where the famous Black Madonna sits. The Monastery and Cathedral has been built bit-by-bit for centuries, and you'll get to enjoy various architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque.

You'll have a moment to enjoy a coffee and a snack while taking in the breathtaking views.

You'll also practice how to work with a live subject — learning and practicing how to pose and frame your subject to evoke emotion and tell a story through your lens.

An entire historic house in Kyoto is reserved exclusively for your session — offering creative freedom to explore light, setting and subject. This immersive, sensorial experience spans two half-days, honoring the ancestral craft of sourdough bread-making. Inspired by the ancient Greek myths of goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, it combines bread-making, storytelling and mindful rituals that honor the sacred grain of wheat.

On the first half-day, you’ll learn about the ancestral art of sourdough breadmaking, delving into the significance of wheat in ancient Greece and its connection to Demeter. Through a mindful practice, you’ll prepare the dough, engaging with the wheat, your senses and the land of Athens. The bread is left to ferment overnight.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
