The Traces of Etching

This experience is designed for 2 to 8 people to make the preparation and logistics manageable; solo visitors are welcome and can participate by paying a supplemental fee to meet the minimum requirement. You'll receive a private demonstration of the etching process and learn about the history of printmaking, both in general and within the local context.

You’ll be served a beverage or refreshment—such as locally roasted coffee with cookies. 

Guests will meet directly at the studio located in Jalatlaco—a picturesque neighborhood in the city of Oaxaca, close to the historic center and a 10-minute walk from the Santo Domingo Temple.

Daniel Flores is a Mexican artist and the director of the Producción Gráfica Zanate printmaking workshop. He specializes in graphic arts and printmaking and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Mexico and internationally. He has also received several grants for projects focused on graphic and plastic arts production within various communities across the state of Oaxaca. Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

He founded Gráfica Zanate in 2007, and the studio continues to produce annual printmaking portfolios in collaboration with artists from Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico City, and abroad.

Alongside Daniel, the "maestro" of Gráfica Zanate, you’ll meet the studio’s team of experienced local artists: Viridiana Carmona, Marco Patiño, and Marco Antonio Santos.

Spain

This private workshop offers hands-on access to one of Spain’s oldest and most iconic ceramic workshops: the Fajalauza factory. Founded in 1517 and still operated by the Morales family, Fajalauza has been shaping the visual identity of Granada for over 500 years.

You’ll begin with a private tour through its original production site and museum—home to ancient kilns, hand-thrown molds, and decorative pieces that reflect the fusion of Islamic and European styles. As you explore, you’ll learn how Granada’s ceramic language evolved across centuries, adapting to dynasties and shifting cultural forces while staying rooted in the local soil.

Then comes your own initiation into the craft. Guided by master artisans, you’ll sit at the potter’s wheel for a “baptism of clay,” shaping a vessel from scratch. The session includes Andalusian tapas and a drink, served on-site. Your finished piece will be fired and available for pickup in a week, or can be shipped to you for a supplementary fee.

This private, rare-access workshop lets you go behind the scenes of Fajalauza—Granada’s most iconic ceramic tradition, practiced since 1517. Run by the Morales family for generations, this factory is the last of its kind still producing glazed and hand-painted pottery using methods rooted in Islamic and Mozarab craftsmanship.

Fajalauza ceramics have decorated homes, marked street names and even replaced damaged tiles in the Alhambra’s Patio de los Arrayanes. Its signature green and blue motifs—vines, birds, heraldic emblems—speak to a style that has endured conquest and mass production. This is truly a living heritage that has nearly vanished elsewhere. 

The factory/studio are typically closed to the public, and your access is part of a broader effort to protect and pass on this legacy. Here, with the Morales team, you’ll take part in a 500-year-old practice—shaped by continuity, as you creating your own ceramic piece: a cup or bowl. Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. With Marie and Manuel, you won’t just receive a collection of beautiful portraits from your time in Mexico City—you’ll also get to know the city more intimately and feel at home.

This 3-hour immersive experience introduces you to the ancient Turkish art of Tezhip, also known as the Islamic Art of Illumination. You’ll explore its origins from the Ottoman period, when it adorned sacred manuscripts and important texts, and gain insights into its rich cultural significance. Hosted at a private studio inside a local council, this experience combines history with hands-on learning. 

You'll discuss the history and evolution of Tezhip art, covering its role in Ottoman and Islamic culture. Then engage in a workshop guided by the master and educator of Tezhip, Ms. Şeyma Çınar, who has been practicing this art since 1998. The host, Şeyma Çınar, is a seasoned artist, master, and educator specializing in Turkish Tezhip Art, Miniature Art, and Biomorphic drawing since 1998. With formal certification from Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism and years of teaching experience, Şeyma has a profound understanding of the history, evolution, and intricacies of the traditional Turkish art of illumination. Having participated in many group and solo exhibitions and published work on Tezhip art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient art form. She will be accompanied by a translator, allowing everyone to fully engage with her insights and expertise. 

A special tour to see how Seville artisans use centuries-old techniques and lifelong expertise to produce exquisite pieces for religious events and rituals. 

Act 1: Bordado (Embroidery): Visit the workshop of a renowned artisan to witness the meticulous restoration of ceremonial vestments and regalia for processions of the Catholic fraternities in southern Spain, mainly centred around Semana Santa (Holy Week).

Act 2: Orfebrería (Silversmithing and Goldsmithing): You’ll meet a highly skilled orfebrero (silversmith) and learn about the various stages in creating elaborate embossed silver pieces such as candlesticks and decorative panels for pasos (floats) which carry the religious statues in the Semana Santa processions, all chiseled by hand.

Morocco

This is a moderately challenging private trek to the revered Muslim shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, starting from Imlil. This trek takes you through the traditional village of Aremd and ascends to 2350m (7710ft) at Sidi Chamarouch, positioned by a picturesque waterfall. 

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. This is a full-day guided trek through the High Atlas Mountains, starting and ending in the village of Imlil. Your journey begins with a gradual climb through Tamatert, a quiet mountain village with stone homes and terraced fields, before reaching the Tidli Plateau at 2,350 meters. This wide-open ridge offers stunning 360° views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, often with no one else in sight. The trail then continues to the Isk Summit at 2,500 meters, offering even more expansive vistas, including sights of Mount Toubkal. 

Afterward, the path continues downhill past terraced farmland and the peaceful Amadin Waterfall—an ideal spot to rest your legs and soak in the mountain air. You’ll then pass through the sleepy village of Achain before returning to Imlil by late afternoon. The trek takes around 5–6 hours at a moderate pace and is ideal for reasonably fit hikers looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path route filled with natural beauty and mountain hospitality.

Hiking to the rarely visited Tidli Plateau, a panoramic ridge with sweeping views of Mount Toubkal—a ridge offering panoramic views seldom seen by visitors, makes this special. Unlike the busier trails leading to the Toubkal summit, this path is peaceful and lesser-known—ideal for travelers who want to experience the rhythm of the mountains without the crowds. 

The trail is richly varied, from forested switchbacks to sunlit plateaus, cultivated fields and rushing streams. Your guide, deeply familiar with the land, will share insights into the area's traditions and the significance of local landmarks. 

Lunch is a generous, home-cooked Berber meal in the village of Armed, served with mountain views and genuine warmth. The final stretch past the Amadin Waterfall offers a moment of calm before your return. It’s a day filled with connection—to land, tradition, a slower way of moving, far from the buzz of the Medina.

The Acropolis of Athens is more than the ruins we see today—it’s a palimpsest of history shaped by Byzantines, Franks, Ottomans, and modern Greeks. Yet much of this past has been erased.

Chile

Chilean textile entrepreneur Florencia “Flor” Campos Correa has curated this experience as a cultural commentary on Chilean/Andean handcrafts and an opportunity to connect with modern makers in Santiago. 

It starts with a relaxed hike up the grassy slopes of Cerro Calán in Las Condes for panoramic views of the modern city and surrounding Andes — the birthplace of Chilean textile crafts. During this, Flor explains artisanal culture and discusses how her own methods fuse Indigenous, modern, and global techniques. This gentle walk takes around an hour and is suitable for most fitness levels. 

The second part of the experience takes place at Los Dominicos Craft Village, a traditional heritage zone and cultural hub dating to 1544. Flor will enable conversations with artisans and provide cultural context to their methods. She will help you buy trinkets typical of Chile: textiles, ceramics, woodwork, copperware, lapis lazuli and Mapuche silver. There is one stop for empanadas in the market.

Flor's experience is an opportunity to learn about Chilean textile culture in a natural setting and connect with authentic artisans. 

The first part of the activity takes place in one of Flor’s favorite hiking spots in the upscale Las Condes district, where you'll learn about the cultural significance of handmade crafts to a backdrop of nature and urban. As a textile industrial designer who has traveled extensively around Chile, Flor is a fountain of knowledge about her country and its makers; she looks to the past while embracing innovation in her line of work.

The rest of the experience is spent meandering the stalls of the famous Los Dominicos Craft Village. Artisans set up workshops in these adobe structures during the 1970s/1980s which now function as a shopping hub with informal demonstrations. Flor's bilingual presence facilitates discussion and creates a richer, more immersive experience. She will explain the significance of materials and motifs displayed at these stalls.

Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”
