This is a full-day guided trek through the High Atlas Mountains, starting and ending in the village of Imlil. Your journey begins with a gradual climb through Tamatert, a quiet mountain village with stone homes and terraced fields, before reaching the Tidli Plateau at 2,350 meters. This wide-open ridge offers stunning 360° views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, often with no one else in sight. The trail then continues to the Isk Summit at 2,500 meters, offering even more expansive vistas, including sights of Mount Toubkal. 

Afterward, the path continues downhill past terraced farmland and the peaceful Amadin Waterfall—an ideal spot to rest your legs and soak in the mountain air. You’ll then pass through the sleepy village of Achain before returning to Imlil by late afternoon. The trek takes around 5–6 hours at a moderate pace and is ideal for reasonably fit hikers looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path route filled with natural beauty and mountain hospitality.

Hiking to the rarely visited Tidli Plateau, a panoramic ridge with sweeping views of Mount Toubkal—a ridge offering panoramic views seldom seen by visitors, makes this special. Unlike the busier trails leading to the Toubkal summit, this path is peaceful and lesser-known—ideal for travelers who want to experience the rhythm of the mountains without the crowds. 

The trail is richly varied, from forested switchbacks to sunlit plateaus, cultivated fields and rushing streams. Your guide, deeply familiar with the land, will share insights into the area's traditions and the significance of local landmarks. 

Lunch is a generous, home-cooked Berber meal in the village of Armed, served with mountain views and genuine warmth. The host, Şeyma Çınar, is a master artist specializing in miniature art, Tezhip (Islamic illumination), and floral designs since 1998. With formal certification from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has dedicated over 25 years to studying and teaching the intricate techniques of Ottoman miniature painting. Having participated in multiple exhibitions and published work on Islamic art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient craft. She will be accompanied by a translator, allowing everyone to fully engage with her insights and expertise.

This is a guided journey through the streets of Marrakesh, where storytelling and sacred geography meet. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. This 7-day itinerary offers a layered introduction to Catalonia, curated by Fernwayer experience-maker and collaborator Manila DiMaira. A native of Sicily and longtime resident of Barcelona, Manila blends insight with a deep curiosity. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

After a slow breakfast, spend the late morning immersed in Cappadocia’s artisan traditions, from carpet weaving to marbling, guided by makers in Avanos. In the evening, as the landscape glows in blue hour tones, return to the hills for a photography walk across the Red Valley, capturing the shift from day to night.
DAY 3 – UNDERGROUND CITIES AND THE SOUTH | Your final day dives deep—both literally and historically. A guided day trip takes you south, into the vast subterranean cities that once sheltered entire populations. From there, you’ll move through Pigeon Valley and the quiet streets of Ortahisar, where everyday life moves to ancient rhythms. The afternoon leads you through the soft palette of the Rose and Red Valleys, closing the journey with views that feel both geological and emotional in their weight.
WHERE TO STAY IN CAPPADOCIA | Most travelers base themselves in Göreme or Uçhisar, two villages with easy access to sunrise viewpoints and valley hikes. Göreme is lively and central, with cave hotels tucked into the cliffs, while Uçhisar offers a quieter pace and panoramic views. Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is home to the San Telmo Market (Mercado de San Telmo), a historic indoor market that offers a perfect blend of antiques, artisanal crafts, and authentic Argentine street food. Established in 1897, this bustling market is housed in a beautiful iron-and-glass structure, where visitors can browse vintage treasures, savor traditional empanadas, and soak up the lively atmosphere of one of Buenos Aires’ oldest neighborhoods.


1. Antique Stalls & Vintage Finds, with everything from old tango records and silverware to classic Argentine memorabilia, making it a paradise for collectors.

2. Local Food Stands, offering Argentine specialties like empanadas, choripán (chorizo sandwich), and fresh-baked medialunas (croissants).

3. El Preferido de San Telmo, a must-visit butcher shop and deli within the market, famous for its Argentine cold cuts, cheeses, and traditional picadas.

4. Tango & Street Performers, often found outside the market, where dancers and musicians bring the spirit of Buenos Aires to life.

5. Sunday Feria de San Telmo, an extension of the market into the surrounding streets, featuring hundreds of stalls selling handmade crafts, leather goods, and local artwork.

Visitor Tip: Visit on Sunday to experience the full San Telmo Feria, but arrive early to avoid crowds. For a sweet treat, try a dulce de leche-filled alfajor from one of the local vendors!

The National Garden in Athens is a lush green oasis in the heart of the bustling city, offering a serene escape for visitors and locals alike. Spanning 15.5 hectares near Syntagma Square, this historical garden was commissioned by Queen Amalia in the 19th century and features exotic plants, shaded pathways, and tranquil ponds. A haven for relaxation and exploration, it’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical charm. 
1. Shaded Walkways wind through towering palm trees, eucalyptus, and other Mediterranean flora, making it a refreshing retreat from the city’s heat. 
2. Picturesque Ponds with ducks and turtles provide idyllic spots for rest or photography. 
3. Historical Monuments and remnants, including ancient columns and mosaics, are scattered throughout the garden, offering a glimpse into its rich past. 
4. A small botanical garden showcases exotic plants brought from around the world, reflecting Queen Amalia’s vision for a royal garden. 
5. The Children’s Library and Playground make it a family-friendly destination, while benches and open spaces are perfect for picnics or quiet moments. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 1–2 hours exploring the garden at a leisurely pace. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for cooler weather and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere. It’s ideal for nature lovers or anyone needing a relaxing break amidst sightseeing. The National Garden is best explored if you’re in the area, especially if you’re near Syntagma Square or the Zappeion Hall.

Guatemala

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Pyramids of Tikal

The Old Town of Faro is the historic heart of this coastal city in the Algarve region of Portugal. Encased within ancient Roman walls, this quaint district offers a stunning journey through Faro’s layered history, with remnants of Roman, Moorish, and medieval Portuguese influences. 

Highlights:
1. Begin your exploration at the Arco da Vila, a beautiful neoclassical archway that serves as the grand entrance to the Old Town. Built on Moorish foundations, this gate dates back to the 19th century and is a picturesque starting point for visitors to enter Faro’s walled historic center.

2. Situated in the central Largo da Sé square, Faro Cathedral is a must-see, with its Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Climb to the top of the bell tower for stunning views over the Ria Formosa lagoon and the city’s terracotta rooftops, or admire the intricate azulejo tiles that decorate its interior.

3. Housed in a former convent, this museum boasts a collection that spans centuries, from Roman artifacts to Moorish and medieval pieces. Don’t miss the Roman mosaic that depicts Oceanus, a standout piece in this fascinating museum.

4. Visit Igreja do Carmo (Church of Carmo), an ornate Baroque church famous for its Chapel of Bones, a hauntingly beautiful crypt adorned with the skulls and bones of monks, serving as a striking reminder of life’s transience.

5. Just steps from the Old Town, this protected coastal lagoon is ideal for a relaxing end to the day with a sunset walk or a boat trip, offering glimpses of the Algarve’s rich biodiversity.

To fully capture Faro’s Old Town, a camera is essential to preserve the magic of its streets and architecture. Visit early or in the late afternoon to enjoy a quieter atmosphere and beautiful lighting.

Old Town of Faro

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

Granada, Spain, is home to the Monasterio de la Cartuja, a hidden gem of Baroque architecture and spiritual grandeur. Founded in the 16th century as a Carthusian monastery, this site is one of the most ornate religious buildings in Spain, known for its breathtaking stucco work, intricate frescoes, and dazzling gold-adorned altars. Despite its modest exterior, the monastery’s lavishly decorated interiors leave visitors in awe, making it an essential stop for lovers of art and history.

1. The church interior stuns visitors with its extravagant Baroque decoration, featuring intricate stucco designs, gilded carvings, and colorful frescoes covering nearly every surface.

2. The Sacristy, often considered one of the most beautiful in Spain, showcases marble inlays, swirling stucco patterns, and elaborate ceiling paintings, creating a mesmerizing visual experience.

3. The monastic cloister and courtyard, though simple in design, offer a peaceful retreat, providing a striking contrast to the elaborate interiors.

4. The refectory and chapter house, adorned with historical paintings, give insight into the daily lives of the Carthusian monks who once lived in solitude and devotion.

5. The high altar, crowned with an elaborate golden altarpiece, is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque artistry, showcasing the grandeur of religious devotion in the 17th century.

Visitor Tip: Photography is not allowed inside, so take time to truly absorb the intricate details of the artwork and craftsmanship. Visit in the late afternoon when the sunlight enhances the monastery’s dramatic interiors.

Monasterio de la Cartuja

Ericeira, a charming coastal village just 50 kilometers from Lisbon, is renowned for its scenic beauty, rich fishing heritage, and world-class surfing spots. Known as Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve, Ericeira attracts surfers from all over the globe, while also offering travelers a mix of historic charm, vibrant culinary experiences, and stunning Atlantic Ocean views. With its cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, and golden cliffs, Ericeira is a gem of Portugal’s western coastline.

Highlights of Ericeira:

1. Walk through Ericeira’s old town, with its picturesque narrow streets, traditional blue-and-white buildings, and charming squares. This historic center is filled with local boutiques, cafes, and artisan shops, giving visitors a taste of local culture and creativity.

2. Ericeira’s beaches are a must-see, especially Ribeira d’Ilhas Beach, a hotspot for surfers of all levels. With consistent waves and a friendly surf culture, this beach is ideal for surfing enthusiasts and spectators alike, and it also hosts international surfing competitions each year.

3. Try fresh seafood at Ericeira’s many renowned seafood restaurants. The town’s strong fishing heritage is celebrated in dishes such as grilled sardines, octopus salad, and “caldeirada” (Portuguese fish stew), offering a true taste of the Atlantic.

4. Visit the World Surfing Reserve area, stretching from São Lourenço Beach to Empa Beach. This protected area has multiple surf breaks for different skill levels and is known for its natural beauty, drawing visitors to explore its rocky cliffs and pristine coastline.

	5.	Take in panoramic views from the scenic cliffs that surround the town. For a beautiful sunset, head to Pescadores Beach (Fishermen’s Beach).

Tip: Plan a day trip from Lisbon or stay overnight to enjoy the peaceful mornings and lively evenings in Ericeira. For surfers, rentals and lessons are readily available for beginners.

Smoke spewing volcano 🌋 that one can climb, tree blanketed mountains, pastel buildings, cobbled streets and quintessential garden courtyards with fountains give picture postcard views on every corner we turn.

The town Is made for walking with stone arches In bold colors, baroque architecture, churches from Spain and vibrant markets bursting with colorful woven garments like ponchos, hats & table cloth and handicrafts.

It’s the birthplace of chocolate 🍫 and there are several museums that teach how the Mayans made ‘the food of the gods’. Adjoining chocolate cafes serve decadent treats and chocolate liqueur.

The coffee ☕️ is divine too and apart from sampling the local shops, we visited a local plantation to learn about coffee making.

Antigua is one of our favorite Central American cities.

Colorful Markets

Florence Cathedral, famously known as the Duomo, stands as a monumental masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. Designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, its construction began in 1296 and continued over centuries. The overall structure symbolizes the city's wealth and creativity during the Renaissance. Visit for: 
1 - A Tapestry of Art: Inside the cathedral, you are greeted by a relatively austere interior that sharply contrasts with its elaborate exterior. Notable are the stained-glass windows designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti and other artworks, including various paintings and frescoes. 
2 - Climbing The Dome and Bell Tower: For those seeking a challenge, climbing Brunelleschi's dome is a must. The journey involves 463 steps, leading to breathtaking 360° views of Florence. The climb also offers a closer view of The Last Judgement frescoes and a unique perspective of the cathedral's architectural details. Another climbable structure, Giotto's Bell Tower, offers panoramic views of Florence. 
3 - The Baptistery of San Giovanni: Older than the cathedral itself, the Baptistery is renowned for its three sets of bronze doors, including the Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti. Inside, the golden mosaic ceiling captivates visitors, while the tomb of Antipope John XXIII adds historical intrigue.
4 - Santa Reparata: Beneath the cathedral lies Santa Reparata, the original church on this site. Excavations have revealed Roman houses and the former cathedral's remains, offering a journey through layers of history.
5 - Opera del Duomo Museum: This museum houses original Renaissance masterpieces from the Baptistery, Bell Tower, and the cathedral itself. It was here that Michelangelo carved the statue of David, and the museum's terrace offers stunning views of the cathedral.
