This full-day photography excursion takes you to two contrasting natural wonders in the Atacama Desert of Chile: the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) and Rainbow Valley (Valle del Arcoiris). It is hosted by Mirko, a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and wildlife and a licensed guide. Upon leaving San Pedro de Atacama, Mirko will pull over at one of his favorite viewpoints to appreciate the sunrise over the Andes mountain range. While sipping coffee and sharing a breakfast of marraqueta bread rolls, you'll warm up your photography skills for the day by shooting the soft morning light. 

You will then explore the ravines and dunes of Moon Valley, coming to understand how it earned its name. After lunch at a local restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, you'll head to the Cordillera Domeyko to study the 3,000-year-old petroglyphs of Yerba Buenas before ending the day in the multi-colored Rainbow Valley.

Mirko has selected these two locations for their contrasts. The morning is spent exploring the salt mines, rugged amphitheaters, and sweeping dunes of Moon Valley where Mirko will explain the geological anomalies. By visiting early in the day, you're spared the inevitable afternoon crowds and have a more relaxed photographic experience. 

The afternoon takes place at two of the Atacama Desert's hidden treasures: Yerbas Buenas and Rainbow Valley. Yerbas Buenas (Hierbas Buenas) is an open-air exhibit of pre-Columbian rock carvings which provide insight into ancient Indigenous cultures. Mirko will explain the symbolism behind the petroglyphs and how these served as more than pretty pictures! In Rainbow Valley, the mountains are painted hues of red, green, white, yellow, and blue as a result of the oxidation of different mineral deposits over millions of years. You will arrive in time to catch the soft light of the waning sun. Lunch in town serves as a way to chat informally with Mirko.

Omar Chennafi, a renowned photographer and cultural expert, is your guide for this immersive experience into the heart of Fes. As a part-Berber himself, he believes in the diversity of the Moroccan identity in forming the uniqueness of current-day Morocco. His deep knowledge of culture and modern history makes him the perfect guide to explore the Berber heritage.

A calçotada is a seasonal Catalan ritual (November–April) centered on the communal roasting and eating of calçots - sweeter, elongated onion-like shoot cultivated in trenches.  

You’ll depart Barcelona in private car, into the Catalan countryside. Your destination: a working garden where calçots (pronounced kal-sotz) are grown, harvested and prepared over open fire. 

Along the way, you’ll stop at the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus, a medieval Cistercian abbey built in 12th century, with Gothic cloisters, royal tombs and austere architectural purity.  

At the garden, you’ll meet the farming family and learn about the cultivation of calçots. Then comes the feast: calçots grilled until the outer layers blacken, wrapped in newspaper to steam and eaten by hand — peeling away charred exteriors and dipping each stalk into romesco (or a similar sauce). Expect to get your fingers messy, and partake in what is, by design, a convivial, generous meal. This is as farm-to-table fresh as it gets.

A calçotada is a food experience that is sociable, traditional, delicious, and playful. It’s about ritual, regional identity, rural air, fire, laughter, wine, and the earth that grew your food. The ritual of gathering friends for a gluttonous afternoon to eat them defines Catalan winter life in rural areas. While many gastronomic experiences offer tasting or cooking classes to visitors, few immerse you in a tradition still rooted in community and seasonality. 

In this private gathering, the owners will share how calçots are planted and harvested as leafless stalks. On a foggy morning as the sun rose over Lake Inle, my boatman took me to the rendezvous point deep inside Inle Lake. Three fishermen sat in their boats with little fires to warm them up. They had promised me the previous evening to do a demonstration of their fishing technique. 

The quintessential pose of the Inle fisherman involves standing at the end of the boat on one leg with the other wrapped around his oar. Inle is a shallow lake and standing wouldn’t let they see the reeds below, they explain. Plus they use their body to propel the boat, leaving their hands free to collect their fishing net. 

Then they throw the cone-shape nets into the water, pressing on it with their foot so it sinks to the bottom where the fish are and traps them in.

A visit to Olhão, a charming coastal town in Portugal’s Algarve, reveals a world of rich heritage, bustling markets, and captivating Moorish-style architecture. Known for its vibrant fishing culture and historic old town, Olhão offers an authentic glimpse into the region’s past and present.

The Museum of Innocence, nestled in Istanbul’s atmospheric Çukurcuma neighborhood, is a one-of-a-kind cultural experience crafted by Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk. Inspired by his novel of the same name, the museum brings to life a poignant love story between Kemal and Füsun, set in Istanbul’s mid-20th century streets. This immersive storytelling space blurs the lines between fiction and reality, captivating visitors with its evocative displays and heartfelt narrative.

Museum of Innocence

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Heart and Souk

Portugal is home to vast cork oak forests (montados), particularly in the Alentejo region, where traditional cork harvesting has been practiced for centuries. Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork, used for everything from wine stoppers to sustainable fashion. These forests not only support rural communities but also provide a crucial habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Iberian lynx. Cork Oak Forests

The Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna are a magnificent display of early Christian art, dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. These mosaics, housed in several churches and monuments across the city, represent some of the finest examples of Byzantine craftsmanship in the world. Declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Ravenna’s mosaics are celebrated for their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and profound religious significance, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s storied past as a center of the Western Roman Empire and later Byzantine rule.

Highlights of Ravenna's Byzantine Mosaics:

Castel Sant'Angelo, standing on the banks of the Tiber River, near the Vatican, is a fortress of history and art. Originally built as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum in 123 AD, it has transformed through the ages, serving as a fortress, papal residence, and prison.
