Coyoacán means “place of coyotes” in Nahuatl, and it’s long been one of Mexico City’s most distinct districts—first as an Aztec outpost, then a colonial center, and later the home of artists and writers like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Octavio Paz. Today, it’s a neighborhood where color, flavor, and history live side by side.

Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. In 1953, Shoghi Effendi, guardian of the Bahá'í Faith, envisioned a temple to unite a continent. By 2016, this dream crystallized into the Mother Temple of South America—and today this is the first stop on your one-day odyssey of Santiago de Chile.

The Bahá'í Temple of Santiago is a structure of nine luminous “petals” each arching skyward like a prayer. Thirty meters high, its glass-clad sails filter daylight into a sanctuary for 600 souls, symbolizing the Bahá'í tenet of oneness. 

As Julio will expand on, the temple’s floral form is no accident: it mirrors nature’s perfection, a deliberate echo of divine harmony. Santiago Bahá'í Temple

Arriving at Los Dominicos Artisan's Village is akin to walking into a living archive of Chilean tradition. Nestled beside the 18th-century San Vicente Ferrer Church in Santiago's Los Condes district, this enclave of 200 workshops hums with the legacy of Mapuche metalsmiths, colonial leather workers, and mestizo weavers. 

Julio will weave you around the artisan village and introduce you to craftspeople who will share their work and stories. As this is an opportune moment to pick up souvenirs, it is advisable to carry cash (Chilean pesos). 

Trace your fingers over copper cookware forged in ancestral fires, inhale the earthy musk of medicinal herbs, and savor empanadas—a culinary relic of Spain’s Moorish past reborn in the New World.

Julio will explain the nuances of the Chilean arts and crafts scene and unravel the backstories of typical metals and fabrics. In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia raised his cross upon this volcanic outcrop, thus founding Santiago as a bastion of empire. This eclectic neighborhood thrums with craft breweries, artisan markets, and the legacy of such creatives as Pablo Neruda whose whimsical home, La Chascona, nestles nearby. 

Julio will take you to Galindo, a beloved local institution where the walls buzz with decades of stories and the aroma of Chilean comfort food fills the air. Refresh with a tangy Pisco Sour and savor Pastel de Choclo—a caramelized corn pie steeped in Andean tradition. Galindo’s menu celebrates Chile’s soul: Machas a la Parmesana (plump razor clams broiled with Parmesan), Caldillo de Congrio (a silky fish soup immortalized by Neruda himself), and hearty empanadas and steaks that pair perfectly with bold Chilean wines.

The breathtaking beauty of a woman in a kimono is a memory many travelers carry home from Japan. Yet the kimono cannot be worn without its equally elegant counterpart, the obi—a belt-like accessory whose colors and patterns enhance the garment. In this hands-on experience, French fashion designer Clémentine opens up her world, sharing deep knowledge of kimono and obi through a relaxed creative workshop.

She’ll take you on a journey through time, explaining the evolution of these garments and how advances in textile manufacturing shaped their design. You'll explore different types of kimono, learn about their occasions and etiquette, and see up-close the textiles — brocade, silk, hand-dyed patterns — that make each piece distinct.

Then comes the transformation: choosing from Clémentine’s collection of vintage obi, you’ll design your own modern accessory — a pouch that breathes new life into traditional materials, letting you carry a piece of Japan with you.

While kimono remain an important part of Japanese tradition, many are worn only once — at weddings or formal events — then stored away and forgotten. Clémentine’s workshop honors these garments and the artisans behind them by giving the fabric new purpose.

Her shop is rooted in upcycling, but it’s more than sustainability: it’s about artful transformation. She selects obi with patterns too bold or ornate for modern daily wear, and turns them into striking, functional accessories. In doing so, she reconnects this heritage craft with everyday life.

A trained designer with a deep reverence for Japanese textiles, Clémentine approaches each piece with care. She believes this process honors the artisans who created the textiles, allowing their art to be seen, admired, and used once again. Just a few kilometers south of Essaouira, Morocco, lies the sleepy village of Diabat, forever linked to the legendary musician Jimi Hendrix. Though his visit in 1969 was brief, Hendrix’s presence left a lasting mark on the area’s identity, blending the village’s laid-back atmosphere with a sense of rock ‘n’ roll mystique. Today, Diabat remains a peaceful retreat, known for its windswept beaches, local cafés, and rustic charm, drawing travelers and music lovers eager to connect with this slice of rock history.

Diabat & Jimi Hendrix

Shibuya Crossing, or Shibuya Scramble Crossing, is a popular scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit and stops vehicles in all directions to allow pedestrians to inundate the entire intersection. The statue of Hachikō, between the station and the intersection, is a common meeting place and almost always crowded.

Three large TV screens mounted on nearby buildings overlook the crossing, as well as many advertising signs. The Starbucks store overlooking the crossing is also one of the busiest in the world. Its heavy traffic and inundation of advertising have led to it being compared to the Times Square intersection in New York City and Piccadilly Circus intersection in London.

I am completely fascinated by Buddhist prayer wheels. Our guide tells us that we should walk clockwise, turning the wheel and chanting, “Om Mani Padme Hum”. “Will that give me extra strength to climb up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery tomorrow?”, I ask him. “Absolutely”, he says earnestly. Well, at least one of us has faith, I think to myself.

Paro Taktsang - or Tiger’s Nest monastery - hangs off a cliff at a dizzying 10,240 feet over the Paro Valley. It’s a 5 hour climb, punctuated with lunch. Not too tough, as it turns out. I must be fitter than I think. But the guide reminds me - “See, I told you so”. 

The hike (including getting to the trailhead) takes about 6-7 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the monastery. 4 miles round trip on a wide dirt trail. At the halfway point is a cafeteria - and for most people, getting to this point is the toughest part of the hike. Beyond this, both the scenery and the difficulty of the climb are in your favor.
