Its narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, wooden balconies, and striking mountain vistas give it an atmosphere that feels both traditional and timeless. Visitors come for its quiet beauty, local craftsmanship, and the chance to wander through a village that still reflects centuries of rural life.

Capileira is known for its handmade woven textiles, or jarapas, produced in small family workshops that carry on an old Alpujarran craft tradition. Located about 7 kilometers from Venice, a 25 minute water taxi (to be arranged via your Venice hotel) or a 40-minute vaporetto (water bus) ride can transport you to this picturesque locale from Venice. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”
