Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Alghero Old Town

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

Portugal’s Almendres Cromlech, located near Évora in the Alentejo region, is one of the largest and oldest megalithic sites in Europe. Dating back over 7,000 years, this Neolithic stone circle predates Stonehenge and offers a fascinating glimpse into Portugal’s prehistoric past. Surrounded by rolling hills and cork oak forests, this mystical site remains a place of intrigue, believed to have been used for astronomical observations, rituals, and social gatherings.


1. Nearly 100 standing stones, arranged in elliptical and circular formations, some engraved with ancient symbols and carvings.

2. Stunning natural setting, with the Alentejo countryside providing a peaceful and remote atmosphere, ideal for quiet reflection and photography.

3. Alignment with the solstices, suggesting that the site may have been an early astronomical observatory or a place for seasonal rituals.

4. Nearby Almendres Menhir, a single monolithic stone standing over 3 meters (10 feet) tall, likely connected to the cromlech’s spiritual or ceremonial function.

5. Lack of crowds, offering a more intimate experience compared to other megalithic sites, allowing visitors to explore freely and feel a deeper connection to the past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunrise or sunset for a magical experience with soft golden light. The site is accessible via a dirt road, so a car with good clearance is recommended. Combine your visit with a trip to Évora, a UNESCO-listed city rich in history and culture.

Almendres Cromlech

Pena Palace, atop the hills of Sintra, Portugal, is a stunning example of 19th-century Romanticism in architecture. This vibrant palace, with its eclectic mix of styles and colors, stands as one of Portugal's most iconic landmarks and a primary example of Romanticist design. Key features of Pena Palace include:

The Costa Smeralda, or “Emerald Coast,” is Sardinia’s most glamorous and scenic stretch of coastline, renowned for its turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and luxurious resorts. Located in the northeast of the island, this 55-kilometer paradise is a favorite destination for celebrities and travelers seeking a mix of natural beauty and upscale charm. With hidden coves, sparkling seas, and vibrant nightlife, Costa Smeralda is a must-see destination that epitomizes Sardinian elegance. 
1. The beaches are breathtaking, with famous spots like Spiaggia del Principe, Capriccioli, and Liscia Ruja offering white sand and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. 
2. The luxurious town of Porto Cervo is the heart of Costa Smeralda, known for its high-end boutiques, fine dining, and glamorous marina filled with superyachts. 
3. The area is rich in hidden coves and bays, offering quieter spots for those seeking tranquility amidst the coastline’s natural splendor. 
4. Water activities, such as snorkeling, diving, and sailing, are popular here, thanks to the pristine waters and vibrant marine life. 
5. The nearby Maddalena Archipelago, a national park of stunning islands, is easily accessible by boat and provides a perfect day trip for nature lovers. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend a full day or more exploring Costa Smeralda. While some areas are pricey, you can still enjoy the public beaches and natural beauty without overspending. Visit in spring or early autumn to avoid peak crowds while still enjoying warm weather.

Costa Smeralda

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Antalya Museum, one of the country’s most important archaeological museums, showcasing thousands of years of history from ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region. Covering spanning prehistoric, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, the museum is a treasure trove of artifacts, statues, and mosaics, many of which were discovered in nearby sites like Perge, Aspendos, and Termessos. With its well-curated exhibits and stunning sculptures, the Antalya Museum is a must-visit for history lovers.


1. The Hall of Gods displays an incredible collection of Roman statues of deities such as Zeus, Hermes, and Aphrodite, many unearthed from the ancient city of Perge.

2. The Sarcophagi Hall features intricately carved Roman sarcophagi, including the famous Sarcophagus of Hercules, depicting the hero’s legendary labors.

Antalya Museum

The hiking trail from Fira to Oia is one of Santorini’s most iconic experiences, offering a breathtaking journey through stunning landscapes, traditional villages, and dramatic caldera views. This 10-kilometer (6-mile) trail connects two of the island’s most picturesque towns and immerses you in Santorini’s natural beauty and charm. Whether you’re chasing sunrise or sunset, the trail is a must for adventurers and photography enthusiasts. 
1. Spectacular Caldera Views accompany you throughout the hike, with endless vistas of whitewashed villages perched on cliffs and the sparkling Aegean Sea below. 
2. Pass through traditional villages like Firostefani and Imerovigli, where you can admire charming Cycladic architecture and tranquil chapels. 
3. The trail offers diverse terrain, including paved paths, cobblestone streets, and rugged dirt trails, keeping the journey engaging and dynamic. 
4. Along the way, you’ll encounter landmarks like the Prophet Elias Chapel and panoramic viewpoints perfect for a quick break or photo stop. 
5. Arriving in Oia, you’re rewarded with the iconic town’s postcard-perfect scenery, including its famous blue-domed churches and sunset vistas. 
Visitor Tip: The hike takes approximately 3–5 hours depending on your pace and photo stops. Start early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, and wear sturdy shoes. Carry water, snacks, and sunscreen, as amenities are limited along the way.

Hiking Trail from Fira to Oia

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

The Ribeira District and Barredo Quarter together form a captivating and historical area along the Douro River in Porto. This picturesque neighborhood is celebrated for its cultural vibrancy, architectural beauty, and riverside charm. Highlights include:

1. Riverside Ambiance: The Ribeira District captivates with its cobbled streets and colorful houses adorned with traditional Portuguese tiles. The area buzzes with lively cafés, quaint shops, and offers stunning views of the Douro River, making it a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.

2. Barredo Quarter's History: Within Ribeira lies the Barredo Quarter, an enthralling labyrinth of alleys and steep staircases, showcasing Porto's rich history. This quarter's rustic allure is accentuated by its aged buildings and secretive courtyards, echoing the city's past.

3. Escadas do Codeçal: A notable feature in the area, these historic steps link the upper city to the riverside. The Escadas do Codeçal not only serve as a pathway but also as a journey through time, offering breathtaking river views and a glimpse into traditional Porto life.

4. Cultural Hub: The Ribeira and Barredo are alive with Porto's cultural essence. Street performers, local artisans, and traditional Fado music from taverns create an immersive cultural experience. Seasonal festivals and events here celebrate Porto's heritage.

5. Dining and Nightlife: Renowned for its seafood, the district's riverside dining is a culinary delight. Evening transforms the area into a lively nightlife scene, with bars and clubs offering a blend of local and international rhythms.

Visit the Ribeira District and Barredo Quarter to experience the heart of Porto's historical and contemporary spirit. Accessible on foot, the area is best enjoyed in late spring or early autumn for milder weather and fewer crowds. Prepare for steep walks, especially when exploring the Barredo Quarter and Escadas do Codeçal.

Ribeira & Barredo Quarter

Nestled along the western coast of Sicily, the Marsala Salt Pans present a spectacular blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity. This sprawling network of shallow salt pools, used for the traditional method of sea salt extraction, dates back to the Phoenicians. The Marsala Salt Pans are also a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Here are some things to look for when you visit:

1: Salt Harvesting Tradition: The salt pans showcase a centuries-old method of salt harvesting. Sea water is channeled into shallow ponds and left to evaporate, leaving behind high-quality sea salt. 
2: Eco-System and Wildlife: The area is a thriving ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of bird species, especially during the migration seasons. Flamingos, herons, and storks are common sights, making it a fantastic spot for birdwatching.
3: Windmills and Museums: Scattered across the salt pans are iconic windmills, once used to pump water and grind the harvested salt. Some of these windmills have been converted into museums, providing insights into the history and process of salt production. We also recommend visiting the Salt Museum of Saline Culcasi, located in the Nubia district, this museum is a vivid testament to the harmonious relationship between the sea and the land. 
4: Panoramic Views: The salt pans offer mesmerizing views, especially at sunset when the sky and water transform into a palette of vivid colors. The blend of nature and craftsmanship makes for an unforgettable sight.
5: Culinary Significance: Marsala salt is renowned for its quality and is a staple in Sicilian cuisine. You can purchase locally harvested salt, a unique souvenir representing the region's culinary heritage.
The Marsala Salt Pans are accessible throughout the year and are particularly enchanting during the late summer, which is the traditional salt-harvesting season.

Just 30 kilometers from Marrakech, Ourika Valley is a refreshing retreat into the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, offering scenic landscapes, rushing waterfalls, and traditional Berber villages. The valley is known for its cool mountain air, lush greenery, and riverside cafés, making it a popular getaway from the heat and bustle of the city. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing day trip or an active hiking adventure, Ourika Valley is the perfect blend of nature and culture.

1. A hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls takes visitors along rocky trails and wooden bridges, leading to a series of cascading falls surrounded by lush greenery and mountain views.

2. A traditional Berber market in Tnine Ourika, held every Monday, fills the village with colorful stalls selling fresh produce, handmade crafts, and fragrant spices, offering a lively glimpse into local life.

3. A visit to a women’s argan oil cooperative showcases the traditional methods of extracting Morocco’s famous argan oil, with opportunities to sample and purchase natural beauty products.

4. A scenic riverside lunch at a local café allows visitors to enjoy Moroccan dishes like tagine and mint tea while dipping their feet in the cool, flowing water of the Ourika River.

5. A drive through the valley in spring reveals cherry and almond blossoms in full bloom, creating a breathtaking contrast against the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for mild temperatures and lush scenery. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended for hiking the waterfalls. Arriving early in the morning helps avoid crowds, especially on weekends. Bringing cash is useful for shopping in markets and small villages, where card payments are rarely accepted.
