Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Spain

This experience traces the historical layers of Córdoba. It begins at the only Mosque–Cathedral in the world, one of the most complex religious monuments in Europe, where Umayyad Islamic architecture and later Christian interventions coexist within a single structure. From there, you cross the Roman Bridge, a vital link since antiquity that still defines the city’s relationship with the Guadalquivir.

The walk continues into the Jewish Quarter, whose narrow, irregular streets preserve the medieval urban fabric. In the Synagogue, one of only three surviving medieval synagogues in Spain, you learn how it endured. Along the way, you pass historic courtyards, civic buildings, and lesser-known sites that reveal daily life beyond monumental landmarks.

The route includes pauses and local tapas, reflecting Córdoba’s long tradition of social life. This tour suits travelers arriving by morning train or car, often from Málaga or Seville, seeking a full, historically grounded day in the city.

Gaia Putzolu is an artist and artisan specializing in illustration, printing, bookbinding, and calligraphy. She comes from a long line of Sardinian artisans and has inherited the legacy of her family's historic bookbinding and printing workshop, which has been a cornerstone of craftsmanship in Sardinia for over 50 years.

A passionate traveler, Gaia has explored Eastern Europe and the Maghreb solo since 2018, drawing inspiration from places like Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, Serbia, Morocco, and beyond. Her journeys fuel her small brand of home decor, stationery, and accessories, all crafted entirely in Sardinia in collaboration with her family's workshop, blending tradition with artistic exploration.

Just outside Oaxaca city is a community called San Andres Huayapam, that is famed as the birthplace of tejate. This thoughtfully curated experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with this tradition firsthand. You’ll explore the area where it was founded, peruse local murals, plus meet a traditional tejatera who will explain the process, ingredients and the history of this nutritious drink.

This pre-Hispanic libation was used in sowing and harvesting ceremonies and also consumed by Zapotec kings. It’s made from corn, cacao, flor de rosita, toasted mamey pits, and water in a massive clay pot. It’s traditionally served in a painted bowl known as a jícara.

We’ll then enjoy fresh tejate and a snack with this tejatera in her home. Finally, we’ll walk to a restaurant for a set sampler meal of traditional delicacies. This venue is located in the courtyard of another local family home, and sits under a canopy of branches, which are key to producing the blooms in the tejate process.

While the host has lived in Oaxaca for a decade, five of those years have been spent in this Zapotec community. Here, she has forged meaningful connections with locals and can speak to how the town voluntarily operates under Indigenous usos y costumbres law, as well as the annual tejate festival. That said, the specifics of this tradition will be shared by an expert local who has inherited her skills from a long line of tejate makers.

Located roughly 20 minutes from Oaxaca de Juárez, this scenic pueblo offers a glimpse of traditional village life—locals working the fields, burros carrying firewood, and adobe makers crafting custom earthen bricks. The Brera Gallery was officially established in 1809, although its first collection existed from 1776 alongside the Accademia di Belle Arti, instituted by Maria Theresa of Austria. 

Notable Masterpieces: The Pinacoteca di Brera's collection includes several world-renowned masterpieces. Hıdırlık Tower

Spend the afternoon exploring two of Dubrovnik's historic and photo-worthy sites: the Franciscan Monastery and the Dominican Monastery.

Start with the Franciscan Monastery, located near the Pile Gate. This serene spot offers a quiet retreat from the city's bustle. The monastery's peaceful cloister, featuring Romanesque-Gothic architecture and a beautiful central garden, is a highlight for photographers. Don't miss the Old Pharmacy, one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. You can comfortably explore the Franciscan Monastery in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Next, head to the Dominican Monastery, situated near the Ploče Gate. This monastery, with its impressive Gothic-Renaissance style, houses a stunning collection of art and artifacts. The cloister, adorned with arches and lush greenery, provides a perfect setting for reflection and photography. The monastery's museum showcases works by local artists, offering insight into Dubrovnik's rich cultural heritage. Plan to spend another 45 minutes to an hour here.

Both sites can be seen in around two hours, providing a peaceful and enriching experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the history and beauty of Dubrovnik.

Its well-preserved castle, charming old town, and artisan traditions make it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Sardinia. 
1. The Doria Castle, dating back to the 12th century, dominates the town and offers panoramic views of the sea and surrounding countryside. Inside, the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving showcases traditional Sardinian basketry. 
2. The old town is a maze of narrow alleys, colorful houses, and historic churches, including the Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate, known for its striking bell tower and views over the sea.
3. Castelsardo is famous for its craftsmanship, particularly traditional woven baskets and other handicrafts, which you can find in local shops and markets. 
4. Nearby, the Roccia dell’Elefante (Elephant Rock), a natural rock formation shaped like an elephant, is an iconic and fascinating landmark.

Mercato Coperto in Trieste stands as a charming amalgamation of traditional Italian market culture and contemporary life. This covered market, housed in a 1930s modernist style building, offers a unique shopping experience that blends fresh local produce with a rich tapestry of cultural influences. Go visit for the folliowing:
1: Local and Global Flavors: At Mercato Coperto, you can indulge in an array of fresh local produce and Italian delicacies. The market is a haven for food enthusiasts, offering a taste of regional and national culinary delights under one roof.
2: Architectural Charm: The market’s 1930s modernist architecture adds to its unique allure. Despite parts of the building being unused, its structure and design are a nod to Trieste's historical layers, offering a fascinating backdrop to the vibrant market activities.
3: Cultural Melting Pot: The Mercato Coperto is a place where different cultures and dialects converge. The local Triestine dialect mixes with accents from across Italy, reflecting the city's diverse cultural fabric. The heart of Mercato Coperto is its community. The little bar in the corner, run by Paolo for over two decades, is a gathering spot for regulars who share stories, wine, and homemade snacks. This spot is emblematic of Italian social culture, where time slows down, and life is savored.
Mercato Coperto is located at Via Carducci 36 in Trieste. While some parts of the market are less bustling than before, it still remains a place worth visiting for its unique atmosphere and cultural richness. You’re encouraged to stroll through the colorful lanes, interact with local vendors, and soak in the lively, albeit sometimes quiet, spirit of the place.

Mercato Coperto in Trieste

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!
