In this full-day hiking tour, you start in the hills above Sarnadas, a rural village in the Algarve. Walk a 10-km circular trail through Serra do Caldeirão, a marked, undulating route through a region few visitors see. You pass orchards, dry stone walls, scrub and grazing paths. This is the meeting point of lowland and mountain — the Barrocal giving way to the Serra. Terraces cut into the schist and shale are shaped by generations of families. From the highest point, sweeping views open toward the Atlantic, offering a contrasting perspective between the countryside and coast.

After the hike, sit down in a village restaurant. Seasonal dishes. Local produce. Tables close together. The welcome is warm, informal, unhurried because it is simply how things happen here in rural Portugal.

In the afternoon, visit a small workshop where esparto grass is prepared and woven by hand. Local artisans demonstrate an ancestral craft rooted in the agricultural past of this region.

Most visitors stay near the Algarve’s beaches. This day moves inland, into Serra do Caldeirão, where small villages and agricultural rhythms continue outside the main tourist circuit, on terrain defined by soil and slopes. The hills — you soon realize — are not scenery but livelihood. The slopes you walk provided resilient esparto grass — a plant suited to hot, rocky ground for rope, baskets, tools, and everyday objects used in local households over generations. Today, only a handful of artisans continue the work of making. In the workshop, you see the fiber prepared and braided by hand, and you make a small piece yourself.

Joana Almeida was raised here in a family of biologists, she understands the geology, flora and fauna — and she knows the people and their stories. She explains how land, labor, culture and craft remain connected. Lunch in the village is part of the same system. Landscape, food and making are held together. This stage begins with a 10-km circular hike through the Algarve’s Barrocal landscape, the limestone belt that separates coastal plains from the Serra do Caldeirão. The terrain undulates gently, rising from orchards and dry stone walls into rolling hills marked by scrub, grazing paths, and exposed rock.

As you walk, you cross ground shaped by geology and agricultural use. Thin soils, terraced plots, scattered farmhouses. Seasonal blooms and hardy Mediterranean vegetation follow rainfall patterns and heat. The route gradually climbs to a ridge where, on clear days, the Atlantic appears beyond inland slopes — a reminder of how closely coast and mountain coexist in this region.

This is not a summit hike but a landscape walk, offering sustained views and physical immersion in the inland Algarve.

This is the Barrocal in interior Algarve — a lesser-known ecological and geological transition zone that defines how the region functions beyond its beaches. Walking here reveals how limestone and schist shaped settlement patterns, agriculture, and movement across the hills. Dry stone walls are not decorative; they hold thin soil in place. Orchards exist where water collects. Grazing follows slope and season.

In the afternoon, you visit a small workshop where local artisans introduce you to the traditional craft of working with esparto — a resilient native grass long used across southern Portugal for both utilitarian and decorative objects. You learn how the fibers are prepared, softened, and braided by hand. The techniques are practical and rooted in daily necessity, developed over generations in rural communities where esparto supplied rope, baskets, mats, and tools. Under guidance, you create your own simple piece, following the same manual gestures that once sustained local households.

Esparto weaving is part of the Algarve’s rural past, but it survives today through a small number of practitioners who continue the craft outside industrial production. The material itself reflects the terrain you have walked — a plant suited to dry, rocky slopes and Mediterranean heat. This private visit focuses on crafts connected to Día de Muertos and the ways Mexicans honor ancestors through memory, offering, and return. You examine calaveras from Xalitla, Guerrero, using them to trace the festival’s pre-Hispanic cosmologies and its later syncretism with Catholic observances. The conversation turns to the structure of the ofrenda — its tiers, foods, flowers, photographs, and papel picado — and to the regional variations that shape how communities sustain this living tradition today.

Lorena and her colleagues work in long-term, horizontal partnerships with more than 500 artisans from 183 communities across 28 Mexican states — relationships built on respect, transparency, and shared creativity.

UNESCO inscribed Mexico’s Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead on its heritage list in 2008. Rather than presenting Day of the Dead as spectacle, which is what most visitors see, and understandably so, given how colorful and immersive it is, this experience is offered year-round, and situates the culture and traditions of the festival within craft, continuity and care. Calaveras, ceramic skulls, and ofrenda elements are discussed both as vessels of memory, shaped by local belief and family practice, as well as artistic objects of exceptional craft.

Lorena de la Piedra studied sociology and textile art and is a weaver herself, but what really defines her work is time spent alongside artisans. Since 2013, she has been working directly with makers, learning through shared processes, conversations, and everyday practice. After living in Oaxaca for eight years and working at the Textile Museum of Oaxaca, she developed a deep connection to the region’s textile traditions and the communities who sustain them.

She invites visitors to slow down, get their hands involved, and experience craft from the inside. Whether through textiles or ceramics, the focus is on learning directly from artisans – understanding materials, techniques, and the stories behind them. Each experience is designed as a space for exchange, curiosity, and meaningful connection. Her colleagues at Onora collaborate with artisans from across the country to create contemporary textiles and objects, using traditional techniques that reflect their cultural identity.

Chile

This experience is a private tour of Galería Artkinson, one of Valparaíso's most intriguing independent galleries focused on urban art and contemporary expression. Named for its proximity to the beloved Paseo Artkinson walkway, the gallery is co-managed by a quintet of local artists each with their own specialty across painting, engraving, sculpture, and jewelry craft. Each artist has a different style which makes for one of the most eclectic experiences in Chile's Capital of Culture.

This private viewing experience is hosted by one of the five artists. It consists of an in-depth description of the original works showcased in the gallery and the studio, where you'll learn about the different materials, symbols, and ideas behind each piece. You will also learn how the work of the Galería Artkinson collective fits in with the wider identity of Valparaíso's urban art landscape. This is a rare opportunity to explore every nook and cranny of an independent gallery staffed by the very artists whose sculptures, paintings, prints, and jewelry hang on the walls. The gallery is co-managed by five local artists each working within their own medium. As the tour is guided by one of the five artists, they can delve deeper into the themes addressed in the exhibition. Each artist is an expert in their own field as well as a valuable insider on the work of their associates. All products exhibited in the gallery are made by this collective—from the labels to the original works listed for sale. Three of the artists are muralists whose public installations have already become part of the urban landscape of Valparaíso.

This private viewing of Galeria Artkinson is hosted by one of the five resident artists who collaborate in the studio. Moro "Newenki" Pichilaf specializes in wood engraving, stencil art, and painting alongside mural art with fellow graffiti artists Don Peluca and Cuellimangui. Fernanda González works with plasticine installations whereas Klaus Tordo is a master at metal engraving and the botanical practice of Kokedama.

The host of the experience depends on the date booked. In most cases, you will meet at least one further resident artist during the visit besides the host artist. 

This full-day photographic excursion whisks you away to salty lagoons and a traditional Atacameño town as yet untouched by tourism. Besides learning landscape photography tips and tricks under the eye of a professional photographer, you will float in a saline lake and learn the geological importance of the region's ecosystem.

The day starts at Cejar Lagoon where the high salinity carries you across the surface of the lake without needing to stroke or kick. Swimming is optional yet highly recommended. After drying off, you will visit the Tebenquinche Lagoon to study the salt deposits from the lakeside. There is a relaxed lunch interlude in the town of Toconao where you will tour its main square and side streets. The afternoon concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat in the Chaxa Lagoon where flamingos wade in the shallows for shrimp. Throughout the day, photography remains the priority. 

This is an immersive exploration of the flora and fauna of the Salar de Atacama focusing on photography. Mirko—schooled in the geology and geography of the region—will impart knowledge sharpened by years of living in San Pedro de Atacama. He will explain the fragility of the ecosystems and provide insight into why the Indigenous Licanantay people consider the lagoons and volcanoes sacred. As a professional photographer, he will train your eye to capture the smallest of details and mentor you through the stages of capturing landscapes and close-ups.

The experience also includes the option to swim in Cejar Lagoon; a thrilling experience which fosters a deeper connection with the environment and supports with acclimatizing to this parched landscape. Concluding in the Chaxa Lagoon, you are likely to encounter all three species of resident flamingo: Chilean, Andean, and James's. The pace is unhurried as you study their movements and capture their pink hues against the turquoise lagoon.

Known locally as the Entrudo, this vibrant celebration brings people together dressed in ancient folk masks, dancing to traditional music, and taking part in a one-day gathering rooted in centuries-old customs.

Your day begins with a scenic drive from Coimbra to the village. Once there, you’ll wander through the cobblestone streets and visit the interpretation center, where you’ll learn about the cultural heritage of Portugal’s schist villages and their Carnival traditions.

You then join villagers as they parade through the streets wearing handmade cork masks, teasing the crowds with humorous verses. After the festivities, you’ll share lunch with locals celebrating alongside you before returning to Coimbra.

Alexandra introduces you to the masked villagers and explains the meaning behind their handcrafted cork masks, made from the village’s own oak trees. In the past, it was mostly men who took part in the masquerade. As many residents migrated to the cities, women and girls began joining in to keep the tradition and ensure its continuity.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

"If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, does Africa know a song of me?", mused Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. I am too much of a nomad but if I ever owned a farm, as Ms. Blixen did, it would be in the Lamai Wedge - located in the triangular watershed between the Kenya border and the Mara river. Possibly the most beautiful place in East Africa. Besides being a refuge for the Great Migration after crossing the River Mara, it has great game year-round.

Until recently, no camps were allowed here, but now you can stay at the Singita Mara River Tented Camp and a few others. 

And wake up at dawn to catch the sun filtering through the clouds and mist. The Wildebeest seem a little dazed as they contemplate the scenery over the hills of Kenya while eating succulent grasses - and staying out of the way of the cheetah brothers out on a prowl, with whom we tagged along for an unsuccessful hunt. Life is tough.

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate, a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch that serves as the grand entrance to the city’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town). Built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this three-arched marble gateway is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Turkey. With its intricate carvings, towering Corinthian columns, and ancient road beneath, Hadrian’s Gate is a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.

It’s a ritual that we quickly make our own. We time our dinner, walks and activities so that we can get a prime seat to watch the performance. On the odd day that we miss it ... being on the wrong side of the caldera ... we feel we’ve missed a significant event in our day.
