This is a full-day photography journey to the high Andean salt flats on the Chilean Altiplano. Located in the northeastern corner of the Atacama Desert near the border with Bolivia, Quepiaco, Quisquiro, and Tara are among the most visually striking and ecologically unique landscapes in the region. These salt flats—salars—sit at elevations between 4,000-4,500m (13,000-14,800 feet) above sea level and are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Bounded by volcanoes and inhabited by flamingos and vicuñas, this is a remarkable setting for both landscape and wildlife photography.

At each salt flat, Mirko will explain the geological features of the wetlands and salt crusts, point out native wildlife, and provide practical instruction on how to photograph it. Because of the high elevation, this tour is best scheduled for your third day or later in San Pedro de Atacama, after you’ve had time to acclimatize.

This experience starts with a thrilling drive through the Martian landscapes of the Atacama Desert. This is a prime opportunity for quizzing Mirko about the region: it's natural history, its cultural legacy, and its wildlife. Salar de Quepiaco, Salar de Quisquiro, and Salar de Tara straddle the border between Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. They provide a habitat for all three species of South American flamingos (Andean, Chilean, and James’s) as well as llamas, vicuñas, and Andean foxes. As part of the Andean Plateau (Altiplano), these salt flats hold cultural significance for Indigenous Atacameño communities. 

Mirko's experience contextualises the natural and cultural significance of the region. I am completely fascinated by Buddhist prayer wheels. Our guide tells us that we should walk clockwise, turning the wheel and chanting, “Om Mani Padme Hum”. “Will that give me extra strength to climb up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery tomorrow?”, I ask him. “Absolutely”, he says earnestly. Well, at least one of us has faith, I think to myself.

Paro Taktsang - or Tiger’s Nest monastery - hangs off a cliff at a dizzying 10,240 feet over the Paro Valley. It’s a 5 hour climb, punctuated with lunch. Not too tough, as it turns out. I must be fitter than I think. But the guide reminds me - “See, I told you so”. 

The hike (including getting to the trailhead) takes about 6-7 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the monastery. 4 miles round trip on a wide dirt trail.
