Japan

In this experience, your guide Rio will introduce you to Asagaya, a quiet neighborhood of western Tokyo where the pace of change has been much slower than in the central city. This is Rio’s neighborhood where he’s learned the names and faces of shopkeepers, artists, and regular customers and is happy to introduce them to visitors.

You’ll stroll along the shotengai, an old shopping street where locals would spend their leisure time browsing shops, eating snacks, and greeting neighborhood friends. 

You’ll enjoy a retro-style lunch at an old shop specializing in okonomiyaki, a savory pancake before exploring the unique shops along the shotengai including a knife shop, tea shop, and a second-hand kimono shop. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to meet and converse with shopkeepers, and learn more about the rich history of the Asagaya area.

You will conclude your tour at a standing sake bar for drinks and conversation, and perhaps share a friendly “kampai!” cheers with new friends.

Argentina

Come and experience what happens in Buenos Aires after hours in a two-hour milonga experience hosted by a professional and globally renowned tango artist. Blending music, dance, social interaction, and traditions, milongas are deeply embedded in modern Porteño culture. The term refers to both the concept and the venue, with milongas typically being held in dance halls and cultural centers. For locals, the milonga represents community whereas for visitors, it’s an immersive cultural experience.

In this experience, Gisela will explain the cultural history of tango and what the dance means in modern Buenos Aires and wider Argentina. She will explain the etiquette and codes of the dance floor and terminology relating to tango—such as Ronda, Tanda, and Cabeceo. There is the opportunity to dance tango if you wish; however, this is optional. You are welcome to simply spectate and soak up the atmosphere from the sidelines. The experience also includes sharing wine and empanadas with Gisela.

Although both experiences are pivotal to the full Buenos Aires experience, milongas are far more intimate and authentic in comparison to watching a tango show. These are social and participatory affairs where regular people go to dance with friends and family. Some dancers are professional, others are just starting out with the steps or seeking to improve. Ultimately, the milonga stands for community and nurturing connection. There are no choreographed routines here, although you may well rub shoulders with professionals indulging in a relaxed night away from the theater!

Milongas are the realm of local residents. However, tourists are welcome to join in and engage with the attendees, many of whom are regulars. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip. During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

This historical walk traces Thessaloniki’s development from antiquity through Byzantine and Ottoman periods, using its religious and civic architecture. You begin at Trigoniou Tower, along the northern walls, where the city’s layered geography is visible from above. Then you follow the line of Byzantine fortifications toward the Monastery of Vlatadon, traditionally linked to the presence of Saint Paul.

The route then descends into the historic city. You visit the small church of Hosios David, known for Christian mosaics, before passing the Ottoman Alatza Imaret and continuing to the Church of Saint Demetrios, Thessaloniki’s most important Byzantine monument. 

From there, the walk continues through the Roman Forum and the Rotunda, originally built as a Roman monument and later adapted for Christian worship. A short pause for coffee marks the transition from the upper city to the modern center. The walk goes past Arch of Galerius, Navarinou Square, and statue of Alexander the Great.

This experience focuses on Thessaloniki’s Jewish heritage, once one of the largest and most influential Jewish communities in Europe. For centuries, Jewish life shaped the city’s identity, with tens of thousands of residents forming a vital presence woven into civic, economic, and cultural life. This community was almost entirely eradicated during the Second World War, when more than 90 percent of Thessaloniki’s Jewish population was deported and murdered.

You’ll explore the origins of photography and learn about wet plate collodion—a 19th-century technique that uses glass or metal plates, chemical baths, and a large format camera. Pierre will demonstrate each step while coating, sensitizing, exposing, and developing images.

Watching your portrait come to life is a striking visual moment: deep contrasts, delicate textures, and a vintage feel that’s hard to find elsewhere. While your image slowly appears, Pierre shares family stories and his personal view of Bordeaux and photography. If the light conditions are good, you can choose to shoot outdoors and include a glimpse of the city in your portrait.

The uniqueness of this experience lies in the physicality of the process and the one-of-a-kind result. Wet plate collodion photography doesn’t aim to imitate the past—it uses an early technique to craft images that are singular, dense, and deeply present. Each portrait is shaped by light and chemistry, with a richness of tones and details that can’t be replicated.

Pierre Wetzel has spent years refining this 19th-century process, working entirely with a large-format camera and mastering the subtle balance of materials and timing. He lives and works in the Saint-Michel district, where he runs his studio and regularly collaborates on community-based art projects that connect photography with local stories and social engagement.

A native of Sicily and longtime resident of Barcelona, Manila blends insight with a deep curiosity. Her suggested route balances the bold energy of the city with the slower rhythm of the countryside — from Barcelona’s cultural core to the vineyards of Priorat, the wetlands of the Ebro Delta, and the historic charm of Girona.
Begin with three days in Barcelona, where Manila recommends focusing not on checklists but on rhythm: explore historic neighborhoods, check out design ateliers, sample Catalan cuisine, and seek out the quieter corners still alive with local tradition. | Head south into the wine country of Priorat, a lesser-known region with rolling hills and medieval villages. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

San Spiridione Church is a testament to the city's multiculturalism. This magnificent Serbian Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a Greek Cypriot saint, showcases a splendid Byzantine style that dates back to 1869, reflecting the city's unique position at the crossroads of Europe's major ethnic and religious communities. Top highlights:
1 - The church's striking appearance, with its multi-domed structure, captures the essence of Byzantine architecture. Constructed from pearly white Istrian stone, the large central dome is flanked by four hemispherical cupolas. The front façade is adorned with nine statues by Milanese artist Emilio Bisi, each contributing to the church's grandeur and artistic significance.
2 - The interior of San Spiridione is a realm of tranquility and beauty. The iconostasis, adorned with mid-nineteenth-century icons painted in Moscow and later covered in pure silver and gold plate, signifies the church's historical and spiritual depth. 
3 - Highlights include a votive vigil lamp gifted by Paul I of Russia, a stunning crucifixion at the altar, and a shroud made in 1772 in gold embroidery on silk velvet canvas. These pieces, alongside valuable candleholders and a mysterious sword believed to be a gift from Maximilian, Archduke of Austria, add layers of intrigue and splendor. Look for candleholders donated by Risto Škuljević, a ship owner and philanthropist, and numerous other items of significant religious, historical, and artistic importance.
