Chile

This 3.8 km (2.4 miles) hike is staged in the dramatic Vilama River Canyon, also known as Cactus Canyon or Cactus Valley. This volcanic canyon is carved by the junction of the Puritama River — which means "hot water" in the Kunza language — and the "cold water" Puripica River. This unique mix creates an oasis that supports the highest concentration of the giant, tree-like cactus species, Echinopsis Atacamensis (Cardón). 

After a 35-minute drive from San Pedro, the circuit usually takes between 2.5 to 3 hours. Although you'll maintain a leisurely pace, this trek has a "moderate difficulty" rating, and requires physical stability and hiking experience. The terrain is uneven at times and requires the occasional use of hands to navigate rocky boulders. The route involves several river crossings (summer rain sees the maximum water level reach knee-height) and high elevation/temperatures. These components foster an immersive hiking experience with high potential for spotting local birds. 

Cactus Valley is a living ecosystem where giant cacti have thrived for centuries. Those passionate about natural history will feel in their element here—particularly as your guide is an expert on the Atacama Desert's geology, flora, and fauna. While steering you through this surreal environment, Valeria will share her knowledge of the different formations and how the confluence of the "hot" and "cold" rivers created a one-of-a-kind ecosystem. She will point out native bird species feeding on the desert flora and bathing in the water. Karaouine Mosque

In Santorini, we discover and fall in love with Vinsanto, the local dessert wine. So we drive up to Hatzidakis - a charming and intimate local winery - to check out the local grapes. The vines grow low to the ground and close to the road and we almost drive into them while looking for parking. 

The grapes are grown in an unusual way, not in arbors but low to the ground, in baskets made of vine stalks themselves. They are organic and are watered mostly by dew as the island has low water supply.

The tasting room is cave-like and we take home several bottkes of the small batch Vinsanto they produce.

Photography-Forward Itinerary for Ljubljana, Slovenia (4-6 Hours in the Afternoon)

Wander Through the Old Town (1:00 PM - 2:30 PM). Begin your afternoon with a stroll through Ljubljana's Old Town, focusing on Mestni trg (Town Square) and Stari trg (Old Square). Capture the vibrant street life, historic buildings, and charming shops. Look for interesting angles and compositions that showcase the blend of architectural styles.

Prešeren Square and Franciscan Church (2:45 PM - 3:30 PM). Visit Prešeren Square, the lively heart of Ljubljana, named after the famous Slovenian poet France Prešeren. Capture the beautiful architecture, the statue of Prešeren, and the iconic salmon-pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. The square and church offer excellent photo opportunities with their vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture.

Ljubljana Castle (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). Take the funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle for sunset. Capture panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. The castle offers sweeping landscapes and intricate architectural details. The walk from the castle to Metelkova Mesto, including the cable car ride, can take around 20-30 minutes considering all waits and walking distances.

Metelkova Mesto (6:15 PM - 7:00 PM). End your day at Metelkova Mesto, an autonomous cultural center known for its vibrant street art and alternative scene. Capture the colorful murals and the lively atmosphere, and include the unique architecture and artistic details of the area.

Photo Walk 2: Ljubljana

Antelope Canyon may be the most famous of Utah’s slot canyons,  but if you want to avoid the large crowds, go to Buckskin Gulch - harder to reach but possibly, more enjoyable.

Wire Pass, a gorge carved through the Cockscomb by Coyote Wash, is the most popular entry route into Buckskin Gulch. It takes 1.7 miles to get to the slot canyon from the trailhead. Wire Pass is short, less than half a mile, but its slot canyon is even more confined than Buckskin, and makes for spectacular photos.

Buckskin Gulch twists its way for another 13 surreal miles, but we turn back after a couple of miles to head back to the trailhead. We’ve stopped every few feet to capture various angles of the rock and light - and literally run out of time. You could certainly do a wonderful all-day hike here.

Through the Wire

Exo Gonia Village is a hidden gem on Santorini, known for its tranquil atmosphere, authentic charm, and stunning views of the island’s countryside. Nestled on a hillside, this lesser-known village offers a glimpse into traditional Cycladic life, away from the tourist crowds. Its serene vibe, picturesque streets, and local culinary gems make Exo Gonia a delightful spot for a relaxed visit. 
1. The village is home to the beautiful Church of Panagia Episkopi, a Byzantine gem dating back to the 11th century, renowned for its historical and religious significance. 
2. Narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and colorful gardens create a peaceful and photogenic setting for exploration. 
3. Exo Gonia is a hub for local cuisine, with renowned restaurants like Metaxi Mas offering some of the best dining experiences on the island. 
4. The elevated position of the village provides panoramic views of the vineyards, farmlands, and the Aegean Sea, especially magical at sunrise or sunset. 
5. The area is surrounded by vineyards, reflecting Santorini’s agricultural heritage, making it a great place to learn about local wine production. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 1–2 hours wandering the village and enjoying a meal at a local taverna. Visit during the morning or late afternoon for a quieter experience and better lighting for photography.

Exo Gonia Village

On a foggy morning as the sun rose over Lake Inle, my boatman took me to the rendezvous point deep inside Inle Lake. Three fishermen sat in their boats with little fires to warm them up. They had promised me the previous evening to do a demonstration of their fishing technique. 

The quintessential pose of the Inle fisherman involves standing at the end of the boat on one leg with the other wrapped around his oar. Inle is a shallow lake and standing wouldn’t let they see the reeds below, they explain. Plus they use their body to propel the boat, leaving their hands free to collect their fishing net. 

Then they throw the cone-shape nets into the water, pressing on it with their foot so it sinks to the bottom where the fish are and traps them in.

Nestled between the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the vast Sahara, Agdz is a small yet historically rich town that serves as the gateway to the stunning Draa Valley.
