Japan

Master calligrapher Eri Koyama takes you on a journey toward peace and contentment with a simple brush and ink. This private experience begins in a peaceful Kyoto temple where she explains the cultural significance of shodo, Japanese calligraphy, and how it has been used as both a form of art and meditation over the centuries. Rooted in Zen philosophy, shodo invites stillness, focus, and a deep connection between mind and body.

Next, Eri explains the tools used in Japanese calligraphy, and you'll learn to make your own ink from an inkstone. After introducing the different writing styles, she’ll guide you in practicing the foundational strokes used in each.

After a short tea break, you'll choose a favorite Japanese character or word — something meaningful to you — which you'll practice, refining your technique under Eri’s expert instruction. At the end of the workshop, you’ll produce a finished work on handmade paper, a keepsake to display and reflect on long after your return home.

You’ll begin with a private tour through its original production site and museum—home to ancient kilns, hand-thrown molds, and decorative pieces that reflect the fusion of Islamic and European styles. Inspired by his background in environmental design, Javier transforms such fragments into sculptural furniture such as chairs, tables and shelves. Each piece is a constellation of temporalities and forgotten stories, a collection and reconfiguration of objects found throughout CDMX, which Javier sources himself.

Javier will welcome you to his studio and share his process, sharing how walking, gathering, and assembling have become methods to map the city and its leftovers. He'll discuss what his design work says about Mexico City, and also how he's approached this work in other cities such as London, where he's been an artist in residence. 

The experience offers a unique window into how design can be responsive, situated and radically resourceful, as well as being sculptural.

Javier Guzmán Cervantes is an artist, designer, and builder based in Mexico City. His work explores residual realities in the contemporary metropolis, developing domestic infrastructures, furniture, and structural systems through low-tech and autonomous processes out of debris, residues, and material fragments gathered through urban exploration. In this process, he engages with concepts such as degrowth, living otherwise, and post-development, questioning the role of art, design and construction in relation to sustainability and community.

Through direct contact with the city, Javier's practice transforms discarded objects into local resources, creating not only tactical approaches to construction but also serving as traces of life and local processes within the city: revealing stories.

In 2023, he founded Ex Soup, an art and design experiment based in Mexico City that uses walking, urban wandering, and low-tech methods to collect and reassemble the city’s remains.

Daniel Flores is a Mexican artist and the director of the Producción Gráfica Zanate printmaking workshop. He specializes in graphic arts and printmaking and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Mexico and internationally. He has also received several grants for projects focused on graphic and plastic arts production within various communities across the state of Oaxaca. Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

He founded Gráfica Zanate in 2007, and the studio continues to produce annual printmaking portfolios in collaboration with artists from Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico City, and abroad.

Alongside Daniel, the "maestro" of Gráfica Zanate, you’ll meet the studio’s team of experienced local artists: Viridiana Carmona, Marco Patiño, and Marco Antonio Santos.

Carnevale in Mamoiada (February 15 and 17, 2026) immerses you in the rich culture of Sardinia’s festivities. The decorated streets of this ancient village come alive with haunting rhythms of cowbells, hypnotic movements of dancers, and tradition preserved through centuries: it’s a celebration of history, mythology and community.

You will watch the Mamuthones, cloaked in black sheepskins with grotesque wooden masks, moving in slow, ritualistic dances. Meanwhile, the Issohadores, with vibrant red shirts and white masks, wield lassos to capture the dancers (and spectators!).

Your day includes exploring the local museum to uncover the origins and craftsmanship of these iconic masks, savoring a Sardinian lunch featuring local delicacies, and and gaining exclusive access to the courtyard where Carnevale characters don their costumes and cowbells before joining the parade.

La Garrotxa Natural Park

Svalbard & Jan Mayen

On a rainy day, at 78°N, M/S Polar Girl sets out from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden. Even in dreary weather, there is joy in watching the puffins swimming alongside the boat.

Then we step on to the most surreal of ghost towns, Pyramiden, a Russian mining settlement with the northern-most statue of Lenin. 

The decision to abandon in the 90s was sudden. People were given just hours to leave. Signs of a hasty departure are everywhere. Dried up plants. Rusted playground swings. Utensils and stoves left in disarray. Hand-drawn artwork taped on the walls. 

The guide points out the men’s and women’s dorm buildings, euphemistically called London and Paris. Everything is trapped in a 1970s time-warp. A blast from the Soviet past. 

Trust Arktikugol (Arctic Coal), a Russian state owned coal mining company, continues to run this, now as a tourist destination. Perfect for filming a James Bond movie.

Back on the boat, we have views of the glacier and freshly barbequed burgers to cheer us up.

Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, translating to "Workshop of semi-precious stones", represents much more than its name suggests.
