Argentina

Come and experience what happens in Buenos Aires after hours in a two-hour milonga experience hosted by a professional and globally renowned tango artist. Blending music, dance, social interaction, and traditions, milongas are deeply embedded in modern Porteño culture. The term refers to both the concept and the venue, with milongas typically being held in dance halls and cultural centers. For locals, the milonga represents community whereas for visitors, it’s an immersive cultural experience.

In this experience, Gisela will explain the cultural history of tango and what the dance means in modern Buenos Aires and wider Argentina. She will explain the etiquette and codes of the dance floor and terminology relating to tango—such as Ronda, Tanda, and Cabeceo. There is the opportunity to dance tango if you wish; however, this is optional. You are welcome to simply spectate and soak up the atmosphere from the sidelines. The experience also includes sharing wine and empanadas with Gisela.

Although both experiences are pivotal to the full Buenos Aires experience, milongas are far more intimate and authentic in comparison to watching a tango show. These are social and participatory affairs where regular people go to dance with friends and family. Some dancers are professional, others are just starting out with the steps or seeking to improve. Ultimately, the milonga stands for community and nurturing connection. There are no choreographed routines here, although you may well rub shoulders with professionals indulging in a relaxed night away from the theater!

Milongas are the realm of local residents. However, tourists are welcome to join in and engage with the attendees, many of whom are regulars. With Gisela at your side, you will understand how to partake in the dancing respectfully or how to observe tactfully from the side. Having 20 years of experience dancing professionally in Buenos Aires and globally, Gisela is a beacon of knowledge about all things tango.

Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip. During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

This full-day experience from Mendoza takes you high into the Andes for what can only be described as the ultimate feast with the ultimate view. You'll travel through breathtaking mountain landscapes, stopping first in Potrerillos for local treats—tortitas and facturas (savory and sweet pastries)—served with mate (a caffeinated herbal beverage) or coffee. From there, the journey continues to a stunning viewpoint at the entrance of the Uspallata Valley near the Chilean border.

Next, you'll ascend to a high-altitude estancia at 2,000 meters, where a traditional Asado a la Llama awaits. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Shibuya Crossing, or Shibuya Scramble Crossing, is a popular scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit and stops vehicles in all directions to allow pedestrians to inundate the entire intersection. The statue of Hachikō, between the station and the intersection, is a common meeting place and almost always crowded.

Three large TV screens mounted on nearby buildings overlook the crossing, as well as many advertising signs. The Starbucks store overlooking the crossing is also one of the busiest in the world. Its heavy traffic and inundation of advertising have led to it being compared to the Times Square intersection in New York City and Piccadilly Circus intersection in London.

Faroe Islands

Getting there on a little ferry tossed around on the surging Atlantic Ocean needs courage. As the boat uses all her resources to maneuver into a tight, rocky harbor, I wonder if the captain, who does this twice a day, is either extremely brave or completely suicidal. We step on to what looks like the sets of a Disney fantasy movie. Twenty colorful grass-roofed homes, one little schoolhouse - which has one child - and a bridge over the Atlantic.

I meet my guide Harald - a septuagenarian with poise to rival the curious sheep we see hanging precariously over the cliffs. Harald leads our little group on a 4-hour hike across the island to the lighthouse at the westernmost point of the Faroes.

Birds are everywhere - puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets - on the green hills, riding the ocean waves, occupying every inch of cliff space, filling the air with their calls, and circling the sky.

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Tünektepe Cable Car (Tünektepe Teleferik), a breathtaking ride that takes visitors up to 618 meters (2,028 feet) above sea level for panoramic views of Antalya, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Taurus Mountains. Offering a perfect blend of adventure and scenery, this cable car experience is a must-do for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone wanting a bird’s-eye view of one of Turkey’s most beautiful coastal cities.

Visitor Tip: Arrive early or visit on a weekday to avoid crowds. Bring a light jacket, as it can be windy at the top, and don’t forget your camera for some of the best aerial views in Antalya!

Tünektepe Cable Car

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Heart and Souk

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate, a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch that serves as the grand entrance to the city’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town). Built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this three-arched marble gateway is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Turkey. With its intricate carvings, towering Corinthian columns, and ancient road beneath, Hadrian’s Gate is a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.


1. The ornate marble façade, adorned with intricate floral and geometric carvings, showcases Roman craftsmanship at its finest.

2. The three grand archways, framed by towering Corinthian columns, create a dramatic entry into Antalya’s charming Old Town.

3. The original ancient road beneath the gate, visible through a glass panel, offers a glimpse into the footsteps of travelers from nearly 2,000 years ago.

4. The two flanking towers, built at different periods, provide an interesting contrast between Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman architectural influences.

5. The location at the entrance of Kaleiçi makes it the perfect starting point for exploring Antalya’s historic streets, filled with Ottoman houses, boutique shops, and quaint cafés.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for fewer crowds and the best lighting for photography. Don’t forget to look up—the decorative ceiling of the arches is one of the gate’s hidden details!

Hadrian’s Gate

Ethiopia

In Lalibela, I am moved by the devotion and faith of pilgrims who have walked for weeks, and hundreds of miles across the country, to celebrate Genna - Ethiopia’s Christmas - on January 7. Here, the year is 2011, since Ethiopia still observes a pre-Julian calendar. I am immediately taken in by the idea of being 7 years younger, albeit for a fleeting moment.

Pilgrims arrive early - between midnight to 5 am -  to get a prized standing spot inside the tiny but iconic Biete Gyorgis. As I watch pilgrims read from their bibles, often from inside their shroud, using a candle or torch, I realize I’ve never seen such fervor in worship.

By 6:30 am, Biete Giyorgis, the iconic rock-hewn church of Lalibela, has no more standing space, so these pilgrims huddle outside and around trees and pray from their copies of the Bible, guided by the chanting from the church, that fills the air with spirituality. It’s poetic and beautiful.

Faith

The Círculo de Bellas Artes is a pivotal cultural institution in Madrid - it’s one of Europe’s most significant private cultural centers, offering a rich array of artistic and intellectual activities. The building, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1981, was designed by the architect Antonio Palacios and completed in 1926. This multidisciplinary center is a hub for art, literature, science, and philosophy, with a vibrant program of exhibitions, concerts, cinema, and theatrical performances. Top 5 highlights:

Naples, Italy, is home to the legendary Castel dell’Ovo, the city’s oldest standing fortress, dramatically set on the small island of Megaride in the Gulf of Naples. Dating back to the 12th century, this historic castle offers breathtaking sea views, mysterious ancient halls, and a rich blend of myth and history. According to legend, the poet Virgil placed a magical egg ("uovo") within its foundations, and the city's fate was believed to be tied to its survival. Today, the castle is a must-visit site, perfect for exploring Naples’ maritime past and capturing stunning photographs.

Castel dell’Ovo

Exploring the Spaccanapoli district is a great way to explore Naples. Explore narrow, bustling streets filled with centuries-old architecture, local artisans, and hidden gems that showcase the city’s deep history and vibrant culture. Running through the heart of the historic center, Spaccanapoli literally means "Naples Splitter" because it slices the city in two. One of the highlights of this district is the Sansevero Chapel, a small yet astonishing space filled with stunning baroque sculptures and mystical symbolism.

Highlights of the Spaccanapoli District:
1. Sansevero Chapel Museum: This chapel is home to the renowned sculpture *Cristo Velato* (Veiled Christ) by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a breathtaking masterpiece known for its delicate marble veil that seems impossibly real. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many pastry shops along the way to sample local delicacies like sfogliatella or babà!
