At an eco center located on a 1200 year-old chinampa you see axolotl, the mythical amphibian once considered a delicacy of Aztec gods. You'll also meet Lupita, a Xochimilco native who welcomes you with organic coffee. She explains how the first inhabitants developed milpa, an ancestral and sustainable system of crop production. You may see small offerings once placed beneath crops by Xochimilca women, honoring Chicomecóatl, the corn goddess.

You explore the chinampa's crops and pick your favorites. Lupita will ask you to help her make a delicious green salsa, which, along with the freshly harvested salad and tlacoyitos filled with beans, will be your fresh, organic lunch.

This is not a party trajinera tour. Instead, you'll experience Xochimilco in a mindful and peaceful way. Get out of the city of Bordeaux to spend the day in the countryside villages of the Gironde. You meet Anne in Langon and explore one of the best open-air markets along the banks of the Garonne River. At the market, you enjoy tastings guided by Anne, a chef who lives in the surrounding countryside, regularly shops here, and knows the producers and vendors personally. Together, you purchase a selection of products to share later for lunch.

After the market, Anne takes you to Bazas, the most important town between Bordeaux and Toulouse for nearly 2,000 years. Here, you walk through the village’s historic center, following Roman traces and learning about its links to Henry IV and Château Haut-Brion.

For lunch, you can choose to enjoy what you bought at the market with Anne as guests in a local hotel’s dining room, or sit at a restaurant on the cathedral square. After lunch, you have some time to continue exploring the village, before returning to Bordeaux.

This day is built around places that sit outside the usual visitor routes — working villages where the market still sets the rhythm. It is common to find yourself as the only international visitor, making the experience especially meaningful for travelers drawn to French life, history, and a quieter way of engaging with a place.

Bazas adds depth beyond “pretty streets.” Its cathedral — a UNESCO-listed site on the Routes of Santiago de Compostela — anchors the town’s status as a historic place of passage and authority. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Namibia

I am never going to climb a sand dune again. I say that vehemently (many times) as I climb Dune 45.

After 50 long, sand-filled minutes taken to trudge up, here are the lessons learned: Take slow steps. Barefoot works best. One step forward will indeed feel like two steps backward. Don’t stop. Don’t get disheartened if a sprightly guide whizzes past you in an attempt to beat his own 10 minute record. When you have reached the peak and admired the view, scream a joyful “whee-eee” and slide down the side of the dune, marveling at the roaring sound of the minor avalanche that you will create. 

Ok, can we do that again? 

Nearby is Dead Vlei / Sossusvlei. It’s a kaleidoscope of yellow and orange sands and the white of the stunning vlei. Meanwhile, the oryx are vying with each other to position themselves strategically into my shots. They seem to have no issues with climbing dunes. Then again, I don’t see them doing any joyful slides down.

The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.

The walk back up to Oia is challenging on a more than full stomach. As we reach the top, we see the setting sun and that makes it all worthwhile.

1 - Ponte Vecchio's Timeless Appeal: This medieval stone bridge has spanned Florence's Arno River for almost 700 years. Its three shallow arches support a row of shops, creating a stunning reflection over the waters. The bridge has withstood floods, wars, and the passage of time, serving as a merchant's stage and a site of historical events, including the tragic murder of Buondelmonte de’ Buondelmonti in 1216, which fueled the feud between the Guelphs and Ghibellines​​. Today, the Ponte Vecchio is renowned for its fine jewelry stores and other offerings.

2 - Transformation Through Time: Initially, the Ponte Vecchio housed various trades, but by 1422, the Guild of Butchers monopolized the shops, turning the bridge into a market for meat, leather, and fish. This setup continued until the Medici era when Cosimo I de Medici, seeking to elevate the bridge's status, replaced the butchers with gold merchants, a tradition that endures to this day​​.

Part of the larger Santa Chiara religious complex, this 14th-century cloister is a masterpiece of Neapolitan craftsmanship, famous for its majolica-tiled columns and benches that depict scenes of daily life. A visit here offers a peaceful retreat, where visitors can admire exquisite frescoes, walk through a tranquil garden, and explore the site's fascinating history.

1. In the center of the cloister, a stunning courtyard features majolica-tiled columns and benches, decorated with vibrant blue, yellow, and green ceramics depicting pastoral and mythological scenes. The tiles, created in the 18th century, are a highlight of Neapolitan artistry.

A visit to Fogo Island is all about the power of culture, art and community as catalysts for social and economic change. It’s a story of the indomitable spirit of people who refuse to give up their land.

First Impressions?  Minimalist winter scenery, it’s 🧊 season, one of Fogo Island’s seven  seasons. There are wooden Saltbox Houses, that must have leaped out of a child’s painting book. Reminders of fishing are everywhere. 

My favorite part of the trip is spending time with the islanders who do community orientations and cabin outings for visitors. These are people who are proud of their Irish or English heritage (seven or eight generations in Fogo Island notwithstanding) — who sing songs and tell stories of their ancestors, invite strangers into their homes to share salted cod and tea, take you on ski-doo for ice-fishing, teach you to forage for berries and show you how to preserve vegetables in mason jars to last through winter.

Far Away From Far Away

Nestled between the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the vast Sahara, Agdz is a small yet historically rich town that serves as the gateway to the stunning Draa Valley. Once an important stop along the ancient trans-Saharan trade routes, this region is renowned for its lush palm groves, traditional kasbahs, and breathtaking desert landscapes. Whether you're drawn by history, nature, or photography, Agdz and the Draa Valley offer an unforgettable experience of southern Morocco’s beauty and heritage.

1. The Draa River winds through the valley, creating a striking contrast between the golden desert dunes and the lush greenery of date palm oases. It’s one of Morocco’s most picturesque landscapes.
