Raised in opposite suburbs, fate brought them together, and now they call the historic district of Kerameikos home. Their journey into street art and creative expression started years ago and has flourished, especially since moving to downtown Athens.

They actively promote and support local artists, organize street art festivals, and have curated urban transformations by selecting artists and murals for key city spaces. Recently, they opened a creative hub to host events dedicated to art, fostering a vibrant community of creators.

Mexico

Oaxaca is famous for printmaking, one of the oldest forms of image reproduction. Gráfica Zanate, an etching studio that works exclusively with professional artists, is among the city's most prestigious. Daniel Flores is a Mexican artist and the director of the Producción Gráfica Zanate printmaking workshop. He specializes in graphic arts and printmaking and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Mexico and internationally. He has also received several grants for projects focused on graphic and plastic arts production within various communities across the state of Oaxaca. Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

He founded Gráfica Zanate in 2007, and the studio continues to produce annual printmaking portfolios in collaboration with artists from Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico City, and abroad.

Alongside Daniel, the "maestro" of Gráfica Zanate, you’ll meet the studio’s team of experienced local artists: Viridiana Carmona, Marco Patiño, and Marco Antonio Santos.

Beginning at Rialto, the heart of Venetian commerce, this walk explores the stories of the women who shaped the city’s social and economic life, from market vendors to powerful merchant wives who managed family fortunes.

The host, Şeyma Çınar, is a master artist specializing in miniature art, Tezhip (Islamic illumination), and floral designs since 1998. With formal certification from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has dedicated over 25 years to studying and teaching the intricate techniques of Ottoman miniature painting. Having participated in multiple exhibitions and published work on Islamic art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient craft. This experience is a rare, personal, realistic look into the everyday life of a maiko — a young trainee preparing to become a full-fledged geisha, or geiko as they are known in Kyoto. Maiko train within a highly structured professional system shaped by formal rules, mentorship and etiquette. Rather than watching a performance, you’ll engage in conversation facilitated by an expert guide. The objective? To move past rituals and gain a deeper understanding of the person.

The experience takes place in an elegant bar in central Kyoto. While waiting for the maiko, your host explains how the maiko–geiko world is organized and offers guidance for a meaningful conversation.

When the maiko joins, a cocktail is served as you speak with her about daily routines, training demands, her personal story including the decisions and commitments involved. As the conversation comes to a close, there's time for photographs. After the maiko departs, you stay for a second cocktail and a brief reflection.

The ceremonies of Holy Week date back to the Middle Ages and are linked to the Spanish liturgy, as Spaniards dominated the island for a long time.

Joining the procession, you will observe symbols of faith and the emotional participation of the inhabitants. 

Bosa’s Easter celebration reaches its emotional peak with S’Incontru (The Encounter), a procession that takes place at dawn on Easter Sunday. Two separate processions begin their solemn journey—one carrying the statue of the Risen Christ, the other bearing the Virgin Mary dressed in black. As they wind through the town's narrow, historic streets, led by locals in traditional Sardinian attire, the atmosphere builds with anticipation. The climax unfolds in Bosa’s main square, where the statues meet in a symbolic reunion. 

At this profound moment, Mary’s black cloak is replaced with a bright blue mantle, representing the end of mourning and the joy of resurrection.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. Tango to Andes in Argentina

7 days in Argentina: Buenos Aires to Mendoza with tango nights, wine, mate and asado in the Andes.

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

Real Alcázar of Seville

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Colombia

Plaza de San Juan de Dios

Naples, Italy, is home to the magnificent Certosa di San Martino, a former monastery that stands atop Vomero Hill, offering breathtaking views of the city and the Bay of Naples. Originally built in the 14th century and later transformed with Baroque grandeur, this historic site now serves as a museum, showcasing Naples' rich artistic and cultural heritage. With its opulent interiors, serene cloisters, and fascinating collections, Certosa di San Martino is a must-visit destination for history and art enthusiasts.

1. At the monastery’s terraces, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Naples, stretching from Mount Vesuvius to the sparkling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's one of the best spots in the city for photography.

2. Inside the church, intricate marble inlays, gilded stuccoes, and breathtaking frescoes by artists like Luca Giordano create a stunning display of Baroque artistry. Every corner is a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

Lagos West Coast Self-drive

Naples, Italy, is home to the serene Santa Chiara Cloister, a breathtaking oasis of history and artistry hidden within the bustling city. Part of the larger Santa Chiara religious complex, this 14th-century cloister is a masterpiece of Neapolitan craftsmanship, famous for its majolica-tiled columns and benches that depict scenes of daily life. A visit here offers a peaceful retreat, where visitors can admire exquisite frescoes, walk through a tranquil garden, and explore the site's fascinating history.

1. In the center of the cloister, a stunning courtyard features majolica-tiled columns and benches, decorated with vibrant blue, yellow, and green ceramics depicting pastoral and mythological scenes. The tiles, created in the 18th century, are a highlight of Neapolitan artistry.

Jamaica

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.
