What is this?

Step into the world of Tezhip, the traditional Ottoman art of illumination, in this immersive workshop designed for those eager to explore this ancient craft. Practiced for centuries to adorn manuscripts, calligraphy, and religious texts, Tezhip is known for its intricate floral and geometric motifs. In this session, held at a private studio in the Fatih District, you’ll learn the core techniques that define this delicate art form. Guided by Şeyma Çınar, a master artist with over 25 years of experience, you will gain insight into the historical significance of Tezhip before creating your own illuminated piece. This version of the workshop focuses on classical techniques, allowing you to appreciate the elegance of Tezhip in its purest form. Turkish tea and snacks accompany the experience, offering a warm and engaging environment.

What makes this unique?

Unlike longer academic courses, this Tezhip workshop is a compact yet immersive introduction to the art of illumination, allowing you to grasp the essence of this traditional art in just three hours. It is one of the few experiences of its kind that condenses a technique typically learned over weeks and months into an engaging appreciation session. Held in a community-centered space, the workshop offers an intimate learning environment where you’ll explore the patterns and principles of Tezhip under the guidance of an artist certified by Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. By focusing on classical techniques without gold leaf, this experience makes Tezhip accessible to beginners while maintaining authenticity. At the end of the session, you’ll take home your own handcrafted Tezhip artwork—a unique reflection of your journey into this centuries-old tradition.
