What is this?

This 3-hour immersive experience introduces you to the ancient Turkish art of Tezhip, also known as the Islamic Art of Illumination. You’ll explore its origins from the Ottoman period, when it adorned sacred manuscripts and important texts, and gain insights into its rich cultural significance. Hosted at a private studio inside a local council, this experience combines history with hands-on learning. You'll discuss the history and evolution of Tezhip art, covering its role in Ottoman and Islamic culture. Then engage in a workshop guided by the master and educator of Tezhip, Ms. Şeyma Çınar, who has been practicing this art since 1998. During the workshop, you will draw your own illuminated piece, learning techniques with real gold powder and hand-paint motifs that have been preserved for centuries. Alongside the session, you’ll get a taste of Turkish tea and local sweets.

What makes this unique?

This experience offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the ancient art of Tezhip (Islamic illumination) under the guidance of a certified Istanbul-based master and educator. Unlike the typical multi-week online or in-person courses, this high-end workshop has been designed as an exclusive 3-hour appreciation session. It provides a compact yet immersive introduction to this intricate art form, condensing the essential techniques—normally mastered over multiple sessions—into a concise and highly effective step-by-step system developed by Şeyma. Together you’ll learn traditional techniques such as the precise application of genuine gold leaf powder. This premium material, central to the art of illumination, adds an opulent touch to your artwork and requires specialized gilding methods, which you’ll master during the session. The blend of cultural storytelling and premium materials ensures a truly unique and elevated experience, reflecting the opulence of Ottoman traditions.
