What is this?

Discover the vibrant world of natural dyeing, a craft that has been integral to Turkish textile production for centuries. This hands-on experience begins with a brief introduction to the history of Turkish textiles, focusing on the symbolic meanings of colors and patterns that have been passed down through generations. You’ll learn how dyes were traditionally sourced from plants, minerals, and insects, with shades of red, blue, and gold holding particular significance in Turkish culture. After exploring the cultural importance of these colors, the workshop transitions to a practical demonstration where you’ll create your own naturally dyed fabric. Guided by an expert, you’ll use centuries-old techniques to extract colors and apply them to textiles, producing your unique design. This is an immersive experience for anyone interested in both the historical and practical traits of this traditional Turkish craft.

What makes this unique?

This experience offers a unique dive into the cultural significance behind the colors and patterns used in Turkish textiles. You'll discover how each hue tells a story—reds derived from madder root symbolized power and vitality, while indigo blue, sourced from the indigo plant, represented peace and eternity. Patterns, too, hold historical and regional meanings, with motifs ranging from protective symbols to representations of nature and spirituality. Besides gaining insights into these traditions, you’ll also experience the full process of natural dyeing, learning techniques passed down for generations. This workshop focuses on sustainability, showing how plant-based dyes are eco-friendly but also deeply connected to the cultural heritage of Turkey. By the end, you'll walk away with a hand-dyed textile and a richer understanding of the symbolism woven into Turkey's rich textile history.
