What is this?

This private day trip from Lisbon explores three of Portugal’s most historically significant monasteries. It begins at the Monastery of Alcobaça, a 12th-century Cistercian site tied to the foundation of the Portuguese kingdom and the enduring story of Pedro and Inês. After the visit, there’s time to walk through the riverside town and enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant. The next stop is the Monastery of Coz—one of the country’s few surviving female monasteries—home to both austere chapels and intricate Baroque work that reflects centuries of cloistered life. The day ends at the Monastery of Batalha, built to commemorate Portugal’s victory over Castile in 1385. Its elaborate Gothic design and royal tombs reflect the shift in power that followed. This tour is paced to give each site its due. With historical framing and cultural context, you’ll explore how these monasteries shaped—and reflected—the emergence of Portugal as a nation.

What makes this unique?

This route leaves behind Lisbon’s coastal landmarks and focuses on Portugal’s inland history—told through three monasteries that reflect turning points in its political and religious life. Each site brings a distinct perspective. Alcobaça marks the rise of Portugal’s first monarchy and the human drama behind it. Coz, often overlooked, offers a rare record of women’s religious communities—artists, writers, and decision-makers in their own right. And Batalha, Portugal’s defining Gothic structure, celebrates independence and the consolidation of royal power. With Tiago as your guide, the narrative comes into focus. Drawing from his background in history and the arts, he weaves together architecture, dynastic shifts, and the quieter stories held in stone. The experience balances depth and accessibility—designed for curious travelers who want to understand the stories behind the places they visit, why they mattered then, and how their legacies still shape Portugal today.
