What is this?

This flavorful walking tour, led by a local expert with deep knowledge and passion for the city, is the perfect introduction to Oaxaca and its vibrant street food scene. You’ll visit bustling markets and meet friendly street vendors, tasting everything from tacos and tamales to tlayudas, tejate, and other delicious staples of Oaxacan cuisine, prepared fresh daily. This is eating like someone who is from the city. Oaxaca’s gastronomy is deeply rooted in pre-Hispanic traditions, with indigenous ingredients such as corn, cacao, and agave playing a central role. It’s home to the seven moles of Oaxaca, complex sauces that highlight the diversity of local flavors and cooking techniques. This is an experience filled with culture, local insight, and unforgettable flavors. Come hungry and curious!

What makes this unique?

This tour offers a deep dive into Oaxacan street food and culture, where each dish tells a story. You’ll uncover the history behind the various dishes you try, connecting you to the heart of Oaxaca in a way only food can. Your host, a long-time Oaxaca resident with expertise in art, architecture, and cuisine, has built warm relationships with street food vendors, ensuring you experience the best of what they offer. Beyond the flavors, you’ll meet the people behind the food, hear their stories, and learn about their role in the community. Many of these vendors have spent decades perfecting their craft, using recipes passed down through generations. You’ll visit bustling markets and hole-in-the-wall stalls where techniques like nixtamalization and handmade tortilla preparation remain unchanged for centuries. This experience is a firsthand look at the social and cultural significance of food in Oaxacan daily life, and is the perfect way to know where and what to eat in Oaxaca.

What is the profile of the host?

Geraldine, originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, discovered her deep love for Oaxacan cuisine through her work in art restoration, which took her across the region. Growing up in a traditional Mexican family, she learned that food wasn’t just nourishment—it was a language that brought people together. In her home, where emotions weren’t always spoken, meals became the way to connect, especially with her father, who "doesn't speak feelings but does speak food." Her passion for food led her to explore the rich and diverse flavors of Oaxacan cuisine, from intricate moles to refreshing tejate. Inspired by this journey, she shares the authentic tastes of Oaxaca in her tours, uncovering the history behind each dish, and offering visitors a deeper connection to the region’s culture in a personal and meaningful way.
