What is this?

Bahía de Kino is a peaceful fishing town on the Sea of Cortez. You’ll arrive by private car after crossing the Sonoran Desert with your local guides from Hermosillo, ready to immerse yourself in the culture of the Seri, or Comcáac, who have called this region home for around 2,000 years. Conducted in collaboration with both Mexican and Comcáac hosts, this experience offers a rare opportunity for meaningful cultural exchange. You'll meet Seri artists who demonstrate traditional ironwood carving, basket weaving, and shell jewelry-making — often inviting you to try the techniques for yourself. At the Museo de los Seris, you'll gain insight into the Seri worldview, resistance history, and deep environmental knowledge, guided by community voices. Walks along the coastline and desert edge offer context for understanding Seri life shaped by land and sea. Story-sharing with elders or youth adds a powerful, living perspective to this immersive experience.

What makes this unique?

The Seri, or Comcáac, pueblo works actively to preserve its cultural heritage. Their distinctive language —unrelated to any other known tongue — is a key marker of identity. Traditionally semi-nomadic and reliant on coastal life, the Seri have developed a rich seafood-based cuisine and a profound knowledge of desert and marine ecosystems. The community is also celebrated for its intricate crafts and complex cosmology, which continue to shape daily life and artistic expression. This day-long experience invites you into that world — connecting you to Seri history, Indigenous knowledge, and living traditions. You’ll experience the culture firsthand through conversation, participation, and place. Your bilingual guides ensure a rich, respectful, and fully supported journey into one of Mexico’s most unique and resilient Indigenous communities — offering a deeper understanding of both culture and landscape.

What is the profile of the host?

Alex and Rocío have been running tours along the U.S.–Mexico borderlands for many years, primarily as a way to share positive, accurate information about the region they call home. Beginning in 2019 with efforts to disseminate local history, they soon expanded to offering tours and experiences that connect visitors with communities on both sides of the border. Alex’s earliest memory is a family visit to Tijuana—an experience that sparked a lasting fascination with the people and heritage of Mexico. While at university, he focused his studies and research on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and Mexico. Rocío is a graphic designer who has managed communications projects for a range of institutions, including government agencies and nonprofits in both the U.S. and Mexico. She loves sharing the diversity and richness of the region through visual storytelling.
