Photo Walk in Rome exploring the Colosseum, Imperial Forums and night views from the Capitoline.

Emanuele Serraino

What is this?

This nighttime photography experience invites you to explore Rome as the city shifts from the blue hour into full evening light. You begin near the Colosseum, capturing its form from elevated viewpoints where Roman pines and shrubs frame the monument in unexpected ways. As daylight fades, the mix of deep blues and warm architectural tones creates a vivid palette that defines the opening part of the walk. As traffic builds, you experiment with long exposures, shaping light trails that cut across the foreground and give energy to the scene. You continue through a quiet side street where the Colosseum reappears between lampposts, their reflections softening the cobblestones and adding depth to each shot. The final stretch moves toward the Imperial Forums, the illuminated Markets of Trajan, and Michelangelo’s Piazza del Campidoglio, before reaching the Caffarelli Terrace. From here, the skyline opens toward St Peter’s, offering one of the most striking night views in the city.

What makes this unique?

Nightfall alters Rome in very particular ways: façades become planes of warm stone, shadows deepen the architecture, and traffic draws lines of light against Rome’s nightscape. The city feels closer, atmospheric, more cinematic. As a professional photographer born and raised in Rome, Emanuele’s eye has been shaped by a lifetime of watching how the city behaves at night — how space behaves once the light shifts: how to recognize a perspective before pressing the shutter, how to balance exposure to preserve detail, and how to adjust settings so the final image reflects the atmosphere you’re standing in. His guidance reveals how subtle shifts influence depth and balance, and how color harmonies shape the mood of a scene. You don’t need to think of yourself as a photographer to appreciate this. The experience is equally about learning to see Rome at night — its quiet, its texture, its glow — through the eyes of someone who has spent his life studying its light.
