Chiara Roscioli
What is this?
Step into one of the most awe-inspiring remnants of Imperial Rome with a visit to the Baths of Caracalla. Commissioned by Emperor Caracalla and inaugurated in 216 CE, this vast complex was designed to showcase the power and grandeur of the empire. More than just a place for bathing, it served as a hub of social life, physical training, and political networking for thousands of Romans every day.
As you walk through towering brick walls, crumbling vaults, and surviving mosaic floors, you’ll gain insight into the sophisticated engineering that powered these baths—from underground furnaces to a complex water supply system. Along the way, you’ll learn how the site reflected the ambitions of a ruler who sought to project strength through monumental architecture.
Through archaeology, stories, and visual traces, Chiara will show you how daily rituals and imperial ideals came together in one of ancient Rome’s most advanced public buildings.
What makes this unique?
With a background in art history and a specialization in ancient Roman architecture and restoration, Chiara offers a deeply informed and engaging perspective on one of Rome’s most imposing archaeological sites. As you walk through the vast remains of the Baths of Caracalla, she weaves together archaeology, imperial propaganda, daily life, and mythology—bringing the site to life through the very stones that shaped Roman society.
You’ll learn to interpret ancient symbols, understand how thermal architecture reflected political power, and explore how the ruins were reused through the centuries. Chiara welcomes questions throughout, allowing personal interests to emerge naturally in the dialogue.
Along the way, you’ll also discover corners often overlooked by standard visits—places where traces of the past reveal unexpected stories. A rare chance to experience the empire’s scale through a space built to impress, with the guidance of someone who knows how to decode its meaning.
What is the profile of the host?
Chiara was born and raised in Trastevere, in the heart of Rome, where her passion for hidden stories and art began early. She studied Ancient Greek and Art History in Berlin, then returned to Rome to complete a Master’s degree focused on Renaissance art and restoration. For the past eight years, she has been guiding travelers through the city she knows intimately, blending history, art, and storytelling to reveal the layers of Rome most people miss.
What to bring?
Comfortable walking shoes, as the site is large and the ground can be uneven. Bring water—especially on warm days—and consider wearing a hat and sunscreen, since much of the visit takes place outdoors.
Where is this located?
Where will we meet?
You’ll meet Chiara in the open area near the kiosk, at the bottom of the path leading to the entrance of the Baths of Caracalla.
