The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established restaurant with a vast doll collection heading to a master’s workshop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher is a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

This full day experience gives you a rare opportunity to be immersed in the world of Japanese dolls, learning how they are made and getting a chance to participate in the process, and viewing works of art in a museum. Outside of the ticket gates inside Iwatsuki Station. Iwatsuki Station is on the Tobu Urban Park Line, most easily accessible from Tokyo by transferring at Omiya Station. You will meet Hiro at the station at 10:30am and he will return you to the station after the experience around 5:30pm.

After a 38-year career as a high school social studies teacher, he transitioned into tour guiding, leveraging his passion and expertise for history, culture and education to serve his guests. Spain

This is a visit to the working atelier of Eli Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez in Barcelona's old town, a space closed to the public. Fernwayer travelers are invited for an unhurried visit with the artists: a walk through the showroom, time in the studio where pieces are designed, and coffee together over conversation about the work.

As you enter the space, you see finished pieces sit alongside designs still in progress. Eli started by sewing small hats. The work has grown into a body of pieces that sit somewhere between fashion, sculpture and craft tradition. Eli talks about inspirations — traditional Spanish forms, contemporary art, architecture, moments of looking that made their way into the form of a hat or sculpture. You're invited to try on some of the pieces. 

From there, you move into the private studio — an area usually reserved for curators and collectors — where Eli and Nacho show objects, images, references, and the way tradition and contemporary art come together in their work.

Walk or take a taxi to Barcelona Cathedral, then go down Carrer del Bisba and turn into Sant Server. At the end of Sant Server, you will find Baixada de Santa Eulàlia.

Most ateliers of this caliber don't open their doors. Eli and Nacho's studio is not a gallery; it's a working space where designs are made. This experience, offered only through Fernwayer, lets you spend time with the artists themselves.

They work slowly, by hand, in a studio closed to the public — interested in the meeting points between disciplines, where a hat becomes sculpture, where a photograph informs a design. From November through April, this experience plunges you into Catalonia’s artichoke season. A 30-minute private transfer (20 km) from Barcelona brings you to a farmhouse nestled in the fertile Llobregat Delta — a region where artichokes dominate 25 % of cultivated land. On arrival, you’ll walk among squat, glossy-leafed plants and harvest plump artichoke buds — grown in mineral-rich delta soil and kissed by sea breezes — with their peak sweetness emerging in winter’s cool days. You’ll hear how delta silt and Mediterranean humidity coax their dense, nutty flavor.
