The experience begins in Urzulei with an e-bike ride through the rugged beauty of Supramonte to an old sheepfold. You’ll follow a scenic dirt path that winds across limestone plateaus and holm oak forests, passing grazing animals and wide, open views that stretch across Ogliastra’s Blue Zone. Once you leave the bikes behind, a 2-km hike begins. You’ll walk through peaceful terrain to reach the Millenary Yew, a protected natural monument, and continue to a nearby Giant’s Tomb. Peru

Have you ever wondered about the daily life of an archaeologist and what they do behind the scenes? This workshop lifts the lid on the care that goes into the preservation of archaeological finds. And doing so in Cusco places you within one of the most archaeologically layered regions of the Andes.

Hosted by local archaeologist Delsi and her sister, Yessika, you gather at a workstation around an assortment of artifacts sourced from the valleys around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You learn about the pre-Colombian cultures of the region and how archaeologists use identifiers to place ceramic relics into historical contexts. Delsi then guides you through identifying ceramic types and approximating the age of vessels using simple metrics. You learn about excavation techniques in the region and how finds are cleaned, identified, and registered.

After lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum, where the knowledge gained earlier provides a new lens for reading the objects on display.

This archaeologist-led workshop offers rare access beyond the display case, allowing you to discover ancient pottery techniques used in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You'll hold centuries-old fragments in your palm and use a microscope to identify materials used by pre-Colombian cultures in the manufacture of pottery. This may lead to a discussion of how pigments were produced for decoration and how vessels were used. From even a small fragment of pottery, you learn how archaeologists determine which part of a vessel it came from, estimate its size, and infer its function using systematic methods. In some cases, there is time to reassemble fragments, revealing how broken pieces come back into form through careful analysis.

After a local lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum with Delsi, applying what you’ve learned to objects on display. This museum visit, with an archaeologist at your side, allows for deeper engagement with Cusco’s archaeological heritage.

Irish-born Daniel O’Shea and Peruvian-born Delsi Espinoza are the co-founders of an archaeology venture that contributes to preserving the cultural heritage of Cusco and Sacred Valley. The couple have teamed up on archaeological projects across Cusco's Southern and Sacred Valleys. They run conservation, artifact registry, and site mapping projects — primarily designed for volunteers and students. Daniel and Delsi’s Fernwayer experiences are uniquely curated for curious explorers seeking to step into the shoes of an archaeologist for a day.

Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience alongside her sister, Yessika. Since graduating from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014, Delsi has led regional excavation projects, maintenance programs, and educational initiatives. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu.

The Japanese katana sword has captivated people far beyond Japan: a finely forged instrument designed for extraordinary precision. But behind the sword’s power is Bushido, the samurai warrior code that placed value on restraint as much as readiness to draw it.

The story begins at a 300-year-old shrine, where your expert host explains the cultural, ethical, and philosophical ideas associated with Bushido. Your next stop is the dojo of a master of iaido, the art of drawing, attacking, and sheathing a Japanese sword, where you take part in a private hour-long lesson in this crucial samurai discipline.

After the lesson, you visit the Japanese Sword Museum, where your guide introduces some of Japan’s celebrated blades along with the owners and makers connected to them. The experience ends with a look at the sword’s place in modern Japanese culture at a shop selling top-quality dolls and replica armor used in traditional celebrations for children.

This is an exhilarating and demanding ascent to the Toubkal Refuge, starting from the village of Imlil. This demanding trek spans a total climb of 2500 meters (8,202 feet) to 3207 meters (10,522 feet) at the refuge, suitable for those with good fitness levels but does not require technical climbing skills. 

The trek passes the spiritual landmark of Sidi Chamarouch, a Muslim pilgrimage spot located in a very scenic place, before the steep climb to the refuge, set just below the summit of Mount Toubkal. Here, trekkers can enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding High Atlas Mountains.

This is a visit to the working atelier of Eli Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez in Barcelona's old town, a space closed to the public. Fernwayer travelers are invited for an unhurried visit with the artists: a walk through the showroom, time in the studio where pieces are designed, and coffee together over conversation about the work.

As you enter the space, you see finished pieces sit alongside designs still in progress. Eli started by sewing small hats. The work has grown into a body of pieces that sit somewhere between fashion, sculpture and craft tradition. Eli talks about inspirations — traditional Spanish forms, contemporary art, architecture, moments of looking that made their way into the form of a hat or sculpture. You're invited to try on some of the pieces. 

From there, you move into the private studio — an area usually reserved for curators and collectors — where Eli and Nacho show objects, images, references, and the way tradition and contemporary art come together in their work.

Walk or take a taxi to Barcelona Cathedral, then go down Carrer del Bisba and turn into Sant Server. At the end of Sant Server, you will find Baixada de Santa Eulàlia.

Most ateliers of this caliber don't open their doors. Eli and Nacho's studio is not a gallery; it's a working space where designs are made. This experience, offered only through Fernwayer, lets you spend time with the artists themselves.

What you encounter is a genuine creative partnership. Eli is the designer; Nacho is the photographer and creative partner. Their work blurs the usual boundaries between fashion, sculpture, and craft: wearable pieces that are also art objects, sculptural pieces that hold the logic of a hat. Their works have been recognized by the Michelangelo Foundation, named Best of Spain by AD in 2023, and shown in biennials and international galleries.

Elisabet Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez are partners in life and work. Eli is a self-taught designer and graphic artist; Nacho is a photographer and creative collaborator. They work slowly, by hand, in a studio closed to the public — interested in the meeting points between disciplines, where a hat becomes sculpture, where a photograph informs a design. Their sculptural works are increasingly acquired by international collectors.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Rome’s Power Plant to Museum

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Coyoacán Neighborhood

Australia

Kakadu National Park is half the size of Switzerland and a real adventure. If you rent a car, you could drive along the road for weeks, camping in different places and experiencing nature in a way you can't anywhere else.

After leaving Darwin in a rented 4x4 jeep, we made the long drive to Kakadu National Park. Take plenty of drinks and snacks with you, as there aren't many stops on the road. Along the way, we visited several refreshing waterholes and waterfalls, had an open-air barbecue, and saw many birds, snakes, anthills, and farmland along the way.

At night we mostly stayed at campsites that provided tents, and the beauty of the night is incomparable. You can hear, smell, and see countless species of animals, from alligators swimming in lakes at night to dingoes howling, to weirdly chirping insects.

We hiked to a hidden waterfall and discovered some hundreds-of-years-old wooden paintings done by the ancestors of Australia's indigenous people. A must-see in Australia for sure!

Camping: Kakadu National Park
