A short guided hike of roughly two hours will take you to a series of caves featuring rustic paintings and traces of human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. They depict the early domestication period of the Zapotec people, when their ancestors first settled here as hunter-gatherers. These caverns are part of a larger network of over 200 caves in Yagul, where the earliest remnants of domesticated corn—a tiny and now obsolete variety known as teocintle—were discovered. This entire area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

As these caves are protected and the town operates under Indigenous law, it’s required that we travel with a local guide provided by the pueblo’s government office.

After the hike, we’ll continue the corn theme with lunch at a local restaurant, sampling one of the most iconic corn-based dishes in Oaxaca: the tlayuda. We’ll share a variety of styles, along with a refreshing non-alcoholic agua fresca.

This hike is a chance to appreciate the splendor of the Oaxacan countryside and gain insight into the earliest Zapotec people who settled in this land. Your host, a long-time Oaxaca resident with strong connections to this community, will arrange the hike with a guide from the local government office to ensure the experience complies with Indigenous law for this protected area. Bertie, an English Sommelier, and Aby, an Argentine chef, are a Buenos Aires-based couple dedicated to sharing food, wine, and excellent company. Aby has been cooking traditional Argentine food since she was a child — helping at family gatherings — and Bertie has worked as a professional sommelier since 2008. 

The couple met by chance in Rio de Janeiro in 2014. What began as conversations about flavors and cultures soon grew into a partnership rooted in curiosity and hospitality. The experience begins in Urzulei, with a 4x4 ride along an off-road track through the limestone massif of Supramonte, Sardinia’s iconic mountain range. You’ll reach an ancient shepherd’s fold built of juniper, once home to a shepherd and his flock. There, together with Giamba and Roberto, you’ll prepare and share a traditional Sardinian lunch featuring pane carasau, local cheeses, and cured meats, all paired with a glass of Cannonau.

After lunch, a short 2 km walk begins across one of the island’s most scenic landscapes. The path is easy but entirely on dirt trails, so you’ll need closed shoes. You’ll pass holm oak forests and vast plateaus, cross dry canyons and trails where wild animals still graze, and reach striking landmarks like the Millenary Yew and a nearby Giant’s Tomb. The trail ends at the stunning karst pond of Pischina ’e Urthàddala, with views of Sa Giuntura and the upper entrance to Gorropu Canyon. The 4x4 will take you back to Urzulei at the end of the walk.

Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience. Since graduating from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014, she has led regional excavation projects, maintenance programs, and educational initiatives. Delsi has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu.

“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Narrows hike in Zion is a fun and challenging hike that people of all ages can try out.  Just take the free shuttle bus from the Zion visitor center to the final stop (Temple of Sinawava) and hike the riverside trail until it ends.  Great views of Zion Canyon from within!

Bosques de Palermo

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

Luis Barragán House & Studio

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

Nestled on the northeastern slopes of Athens’ Acropolis, Anafiotika is a charming and historic neighborhood that feels like a Cycladic island village transported to the heart of the Greek capital. Built in the mid-19th century by stonemasons from the island of Anafi, who came to Athens to help construct King Otto’s palace, this neighborhood is a tranquil oasis of whitewashed houses, vibrant bougainvillea, and narrow, winding streets. Its unique blend of Cycladic architecture and urban history offers visitors a serene escape from the city’s bustling energy. 
1. The neighborhood’s homes feature signature white walls, flat roofs, and brightly painted shutters, reminiscent of the Greek islands. Despite being in the shadow of the Acropolis, Anafiotika retains its island-inspired charm. 
2. From many spots in Anafiotika, visitors are rewarded with sweeping vistas of Athens, stretching to the Aegean Sea. Sunset here is particularly magical. 
3. The maze-like alleys are perfect for leisurely exploration, with each turn revealing hidden courtyards, colorful flowers, and local charm. 
4. The neighborhood is almost car-free, creating a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy the gentle hum of daily life and occasional melodies of traditional Greek music. 
5. Anafiotika’s location makes it an ideal starting point or detour for visitors heading to the iconic Acropolis. 
Visitor Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as the cobblestone paths can be uneven. Bring a camera to capture the postcard-perfect beauty!

Anafiotika Neighborhood

Santa Maria del Mar, known as the "Cathedral of La Ribera" in Barcelona, is a sterling example of pure Catalan Gothic architecture, distinguished by its harmonious proportions and serene ambiance. Completed rapidly for a medieval church, between 1329 and 1384, it maintains a stylistic purity rare for the era due to its construction within just 55 years. The church's interior, marked by its vast, open spaces and the widest column spacing of any Gothic church in Europe, creates an impression of sublime width, height, and airiness​​​​. It’s our favorite church in Barcelona, here’s why:
1: The church's interior is notably sparse in imagery, a result of damage from a fire in 1936 during anticlerical disturbances. Despite this loss, including the destruction of the Baroque retable by Deodat Casanoves and Salvador Gurri, some stained-glass windows from various periods have survived, contributing to the church's luminous atmosphere​​.
2: The basilica's design boasts very tall slender columns that are 13 meters apart, supporting three naves of equal height. This unique structural approach contributes to the church's feeling of spaciousness, with its maximum height matching its total width at 100 medieval feet​​​​.
3: Rooftop Terrace Tour: Available from May to October, the tour offers insights into the church's construction, history, and the surrounding La Ribera neighborhood. 
4: Santa Maria del Mar is a beacon of Barcelona's rich maritime and mercantile history. Its pure Catalan Gothic style, and the communal effort symbolized by the 'bastaixos' carved on its doors, speak to a deep connection between the city's people and this venerable basilica. 
The church is located in La Ribera and welcomes visitors daily, with cultural visits and guided tours available in multiple languages.

Santa Maria del Mar

Karaköy, one of Istanbul’s oldest port neighborhoods, has undergone a vibrant transformation, becoming a hub of creativity and modern culture while retaining its historic charm. The Colosseum and Roman Forum stand as timeless monuments to the grandeur of ancient Rome. These iconic landmarks, rich in history and architectural marvels, offer a window into the life and culture of one of the world's greatest empires. Key Highlights:

Paisagem Protegida Local da Fonte da Benémola and Rocha da Pena are two of Portugal’s hidden natural treasures in the Algarve region. Both areas offer an escape into the countryside, ideal for walks through diverse ecosystems and picturesque trails that showcase a different side of the Algarve’s beauty beyond its famous beaches.

1. Fonte da Benémola is a lush, river-fed landscape where springs and wetlands create a cool, green oasis. Along the gentle paths, you’ll see a unique mix of vegetation like oleanders and tamarisks, and may even spot wildlife such as turtles, kingfishers, and otters. The relatively flat trail makes it a family-friendly spot to experience the Algarve’s natural wonders.

2. Rocha da Pena, known for its impressive limestone cliffs, provides a more challenging hike with breathtaking panoramic views. The trail ascends to a plateau at about 480 meters, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas over the Algarve countryside. Rocha da Pena also holds historical significance, with ancient fortifications and caves that were once inhabited by prehistoric people.

3. Both areas support a rich variety of plant and animal life. From Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme to rare orchids, these landscapes are a haven for biodiversity. Birdwatchers, in particular, can enjoy spotting species like eagles and falcons soaring high above.

4. Informational signs and well-marked trails in both locations enhance the experience by highlighting the natural and cultural importance of these landscapes.

5. These peaceful areas also make perfect picnic spots. Shaded areas near the Fonte da Benémola springs or the Rocha da Pena plateau provide scenic and serene locations to relax with a meal.

Both areas are accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer especially pleasant weather.

Algarve’s Picturesque Trails

Tucked away in the High Atlas Mountains, Imlil is a picturesque Berber village and the starting point for some of Morocco’s best mountain hikes, including the trek to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Surrounded by dramatic valleys, walnut groves, and traditional mudbrick houses, Imlil offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and Berber culture. Whether you're here for a short hike or an extended trek, this charming village is an unforgettable destination for outdoor lovers.

1. A scenic hike through the Aït Mizane Valley takes you past terraced fields, flowing streams, and small Berber villages, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

5. A waterfall near Imlil, just a short walk from the village, is a peaceful spot to relax, surrounded by the sounds of nature and views of the rugged mountain terrain.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) for mild weather and clear hiking conditions. Wearing sturdy hiking boots is essential, as the terrain can be rocky and steep. Hiring a local guide enhances the experience, especially for longer treks. Staying in a Berber guesthouse offers an authentic cultural experience, and packing warm layers is important, as temperatures drop at higher altitudes.
