Jaime (also known as Ja Cariocandino) will introduce you to the city’s layered identity through a tour structured around ten public spaces that—in his expert opinion—are architecturally remarkable. The tour includes transport by private vehicle, punctuated by short walks designed to deepen your understanding of the urban landscape and local community.

Valparaíso's distinctive topography—with steep hills surrounding a narrow coastal plain—has shaped how people live, move, and build here. Rather than focusing on tourist hubs, Jaime’s route centers on spaces that have emerged organically through civic use and historical need. Highlights include plazas, markets, housing developments, and hidden side streets that form the city's lived core. He’ll explain how these spaces emerged with the expansion of the flat part of the city: El Plan, or the “Horn” of Valparaíso.

Jaime Núñez is a Chilean architect and master in urban planning. Born and raised in Valparaíso—the Jewel of the Pacific—he offers a unique perspective on this city of poets, sailors, and artists. Having studied every corner and curve of this place built on 45 hills, he shares the cultural story behind each edifice. His career took him to Brazil, where he published papers and conducted further research into the landscape of urban design. Upon returning to Valparaíso, Jaime established his own architectural firm.

His mission is to inspire creativity in every traveler who sets foot in his home city and to encourage them to look beyond the surface. This one-day experience takes you from Porto to the heart of the Douro Valley where you’ll witness centuries-old winemaking traditions and meet the families who have helped shape this UNESCO-recognized landscape. Before reaching the valley, you’ll make a pitstop at Amarante, a charming riverside town known for its cheeky sweet tradition. You’ll take a short break here for coffee and pastries before hitting the road to visit a small family-run vineyard in the countryside. The owners will welcome you with open arms, showing you around the vineyards and regaling stories of their ancestors while handing you a glass of their latest harvest. 

After the guided wine tasting, you’ll be welcomed for lunch in the home of another small producer to enjoy a seasonal, home-cooked meal shared around the family table. The drive back to Porto follows a slower, scenic route through terraced hillsides and river views with a couple of stops to take in the sights.

Join a vibrant carnival buzzing with excitement! On Shrove Tuesday 17, February, the grand parade of the Carnevale of Tempio Pausania unfolds, culminating in the dramatic trial of Re Giorgio, accused of the city's woes. Thousands gather in the square as the float representing the king meets its fiery fate, marking the end of an exhilarating Carnevale.

After a traditional lunch, and led by local photographer Gianmario Pedroni, you'll cross streets filled with colorful guests—flag-wavers, majorettes, and musicians—each adding to the spectacle. Costumed performers dance energetically, their masks telling stories of tradition and playful anonymity.

Among the masks, you'll see the enigmatic Domino, a black cloaked mask exclusive to Tempio Pausania, used to tease friends or approach a long-desired love. You'll also meet the raucous “lu traicogghju”, echoing the carnival's wild past, and “lu linzolu cupaltatu”, a local mask created from a bedsheet.

This experience is very exclusive: Led by the official photographer of the event, Gianmario Pedroni, you will be able to access special areas closed to the public to see and photograph the parade up-close. As the son of a local float constructor, Gianmario shares insight into behind-the-scenes stories of the artisans and their work. Starting the tour at his studio allows you to see and hear the stories of his work. 

Shrove Tuesday in Tempio Pausania reaches its pinnacle with the dramatic trial of King Giorgio, culminating in the fiery end of his float. This captivating spectacle attracts thousands, seamlessly blending tradition and entertainment in a vibrant atmosphere.

You'll capture the authentic spirit of the Carnival and encounter unique masks, and witness the colossal pyre that symbolizes both the conclusion of the Carnival and a powerful renewal. Burning the King of Carnival is a propitiatory rite, representing a scapegoat whose sacrifice frees the community from all its ills.

This experience takes you to the heart of northern Sardinia, where Mount Limbara rises with its unmistakable granite formations and sweeping views. With an elevation of 1,360 meters, it’s the second highest mountain range on the island, yet few travelers venture into its vast forests, shaped by wind, silence, and time. You’ll explore this extraordinary terrain with a landscape photographer who knows every curve and contrast of the mountain, a place he’s called home since childhood.

Starting from the lower slopes, you’ll walk through ancient holm oak woods, one of the largest forests in Italy. In this experience, you’ll discover that ham carving isn’t just a technique — it’s an art form, practiced with care and reverence. At a family-run business, master carvers will demonstrate how each cut affects the flavor, texture, and aroma. As they work with precision and passion, they’ll explain the different parts of the ham and the history and tradition behind it.

Your expert host will explain why true Iberian ham can only be produced in Spain, highlight its distinctive characteristics, and explore the different quality levels, from natural grain-fed ham to the prized 100% Iberian acorn-fed ham — and why each deserves its place on the plate.

This experience takes place in a family business in Madrid’s historic Austrias neighborhood. It’s run by the third generation of the Arroyo family, whose grandfather founded the business 65 years ago. My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

How Many Gondolas?

The Navigli Canals, a system of interconnected waterways in and around Milan, date back to the Middle Ages. 3 - Canal Cruises: Exploring the Canals by boat offers a unique perspective on Milan's history and landscape. Guided tours take visitors through the district, with stopovers at significant historical sites like the ancient Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio and Vicolo dei Lavandai. These cruises provide an immersive experience, combining sightseeing with the discovery of Milanese flavors and traditions​​​​.
4 - Venetian Gondola Experience: A unique attraction on the Navigli is the opportunity to cruise the canals in a restored Venetian gondola. This experience, offered by the Canottieri di San Cristoforo rowing club, allows groups to explore the canals in an authentic gondola, complete with the option of a photographer for a memorable photo shoot​​.

The Navigli Canals

Benagil Cave, located near the small fishing village of Benagil on the southern coast of Portugal, is one of the Algarve's most breathtaking natural attractions. This spectacular sea cave, renowned for its unique formation and stunning natural light, is accessible only by water, making it a thrilling destination for visitors. Here are the top highlights:

1. The cave is renowned for its impressive dome-like structure, carved by the sea into the limestone cliffs. The natural skylight at the top of the cave allows sunlight to pour in, creating a magical atmosphere inside.

Visiting Benagil Cave is a must-do for anyone traveling to the Algarve region. The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn when the weather is pleasant, and the tourist crowds are smaller.

Benagil Cave: Natural Wonder

Tanzania

"If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, does Africa know a song of me?", mused Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. I am too much of a nomad but if I ever owned a farm, as Ms. Blixen did, it would be in the Lamai Wedge - located in the triangular watershed between the Kenya border and the Mara river. Possibly the most beautiful place in East Africa. Besides being a refuge for the Great Migration after crossing the River Mara, it has great game year-round.

Until recently, no camps were allowed here, but now you can stay at the Singita Mara River Tented Camp and a few others. 

And wake up at dawn to catch the sun filtering through the clouds and mist. The Wildebeest seem a little dazed as they contemplate the scenery over the hills of Kenya while eating succulent grasses - and staying out of the way of the cheetah brothers out on a prowl, with whom we tagged along for an unsuccessful hunt. Life is tough.

Sunrise Over the Mara

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to the iconic Skala de la Ville, a historic fortification built in the 18th century to defend the city against maritime invasions. Stretching along the edge of the medina, the ramparts offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the bustling Port of Essaouira, and the distant Îles Purpuraires. Famous for its bronze cannons lined up along the sea wall, this scenic spot also served as a filming location for productions like Game of Thrones. A walk along the ramparts offers visitors a perfect blend of history, breathtaking views, and incredible photo opportunities.

2. Enjoy sweeping views of the port, Essaouira’s beach, and the surrounding medina from various lookout points along the ramparts.

4. The ramparts are lined with small artisan shops and galleries selling handmade crafts, including wood carvings and colorful paintings from local artists.

5. Explore hidden staircases and tunnels built into the fortification, offering quieter spaces to take in the views away from the crowds.

Visitor Tip: Visit during sunset for spectacular lighting and fewer crowds. Bring a jacket—the sea breeze can be strong, especially in the late afternoon.

Skala de la Ville

Granada's Jewish and Gypsy neighborhoods, the Realejo and Sacromonte districts, are two of the most culturally significant and historically rich areas of the city. Both neighborhoods offer a unique look into the diverse heritage that shaped Granada, with the Realejo reflecting the city’s Sephardic Jewish history, and Sacromonte being the heart of Granada’s Gypsy (Roma) culture and the birthplace of the passionate Zambra flamenco style.

Highlights of Realejo (Jewish Quarter):

1. Historical Streets: The Realejo neighborhood, once known as Garnata al-Yahud, was the vibrant Jewish quarter of Granada before the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain. Its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses retain much of their medieval charm, making it a fascinating area to explore.

2. Carmen de los Mártires: One of the most beautiful Carmen-style gardens in Granada, offering peaceful surroundings and stunning views of the Alhambra and the city. 

3. Campo del Príncipe: This central square is the neighborhood’s heart, surrounded by traditional taverns where locals gather. It’s an excellent place to enjoy tapas.

Highlights of Sacromonte (Gypsy Quarter):

1. Cuevas (Caves) of Sacromonte: The cave houses of Sacromonte, dug into the hillside, are the hallmark of this Gypsy neighborhood. Many of these caves are still inhabited and have been converted into flamenco tablaos, where visitors can experience the raw passion of Zambra.

2. Sacromonte Abbey: Perched on the hillside, this abbey offers a glimpse into both religious and cultural history. The abbey complex includes underground caves where early Christians were said to have worshipped, as well as breathtaking views over Granada and the Alhambra.

3. Flamenco Shows: Sacromonte is famous for its live flamenco performances. Visit one of the traditional tablaos, such as Cueva de la Rocío or Zambra María la Canastera, to experience this deeply emotional art form in its most authentic setting.

Botswana

Meet the Lion. Landlord of the Okavango floodplains. The fearless prides of lions here are known to hunt buffaloes and elephants. They have large prides, with several young cubs. In the delta, as it is elsewhere, it’s all about power and opportunism.

The delta is clearly a fluke of nature, and the way to appreciate it best is from the air, especially in June and July when you can see the progress of the rain water flooding into the area and turning it into a lush paradise teeming with wildlife. 

It’s a very special place.

Lion vs. Buffalo

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Plaza de la Virgen, one of the city’s most picturesque and historic squares. Nestled in the heart of the old town, this elegant plaza is surrounded by some of Valencia’s most important landmarks, including the Cathedral of Valencia, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken, and the Palace of the Generalitat. With its ornate fountains, lively cafés, and centuries of history, Plaza de la Virgen is a must-visit for those looking to soak in the city’s cultural and architectural beauty.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the evening when the buildings are beautifully illuminated, or on a Thursday at noon to witness the Water Tribunal of Valencia, a UNESCO-recognized tradition that has taken place here for over 1,000 years.
