Throughout the evening, Eric shares fascinating and useful information about Kyoto cuisine which will add to your dining experience through your stay in the city. The seasonal menu changes around May/June and Oct/Nov; enjoy a completely different experience at least twice a year.

In the heart of the historic centre, fearless riders gallop through the narrow stone-paved streets in a daring race known as Sa Carrela ‘e Nanti.

The highlight? A centuries-old ritual where horsemen aim to strike two cloth hens hanging along the route, blending athletic skill and ancient folklore. You’ll be guided by an expert photographer who helps you capture the energy and beauty of the event, while introducing you to locals who’ve lived this tradition since childhood. Chile

This four-hour walking experience immerses you in Barrio Yungay, one of Santiago de Chile’s oldest neighborhoods. This enclave was laid out shortly after Chile's Independence, and traces the transition from colonial rule to a modern, 19th century capital city. Its history mirrors Chile’s social, political, and architectural evolution, while Héctor’s experience focuses on art, history, and memory. As one of the most authentic parts of the city, you will experience the "real life" of a santiaguino or santiaguina.

Much of the route highlights the street art of Barrio Yungay. As Héctor shows, these murals speak of resistance, culture, nature, and much more. The walk zigzags through the streets, where every block has something unique to reveal. Along the way, you visit a local art gallery and learn about the ten artists whose work is exhibited there. You also stop at one of the world’s oldest continuously operating barbershops, where you can pause for a bite at its café.

Héctor’s storytelling on this walking tour experience is based predominantly on the work of street artists and their testimonies. While he is the host, his experience relies on the voices of those who have created a public record of Santiago's development as a modern city. Every mural reveals something from Chilean politics and memory, using the medium of nature, abstract, and psychedelic art styles. Among the treasures, you will see Santiago’s tallest mural, La Madre Secular II, and learn how it represents indigenous Andean cultural heritage. Héctor will also introduce you to the artists at the gallery, which opens exclusively for this tour.

A six-hour medium-difficulty guided private trek through the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Starting at 1740 m (5708 ft) in Imlil, the gateway to Mount Toubkal, you'll cross the passes of Tametert and Aguerssioual, each offering elevations above 2200 m (7219 ft) and breathtaking panoramas of North Africa's highest peak.

Originally trained in economics and working as a business consultant, he was influenced by his grandfather, a painter, to develop a deep sensitivity to light and composition. His "Slow Photography" philosophy emphasizes patience, immersion, and understanding places before capturing them.

In some cases the experience may be led by Francesco’s colleague, Zakaria Mtilk, known as Zack, a photographer born and raised in Essaouira. Madrid to Porto Between Lands

A road trip itinerary from Madrid to Porto via Toledo and Galicia, blending culture, drives, locals.

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love

With its whitewashed buildings, blue-shuttered windows, and maze of cobbled streets, the medina offers an unforgettable experience for culture lovers, shoppers, and photographers alike.

Essaouira Medina

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

Argentina

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Walking with the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen of the Makgadikgadi Plains in the Central Kalahari, quintessential hunter-gatherers, I learned several things that I hope never to have to use - how to pronounce first names that are laden with clicks, collect plants for medicinal recipes, dig for scorpions, and make a fire with twigs and leaves.

Makgadikgadi means 'dry, dry', but the bush men and women know how to live in harmony with the land. Family and cultural ties are strong.

Thanks to Jack’s Camp for organizing this visit, they have longstanding connections with the local people.

La Pedrera Night Experience

1942: Errol Flynn popularised rafting down the river Rio Grande in Jamaica on bamboo rafts, made of long logs bound together. Fast forward: I'm on a raft for a 3-hour ride and sensory overload: ferns, birds, rapids, butterflies, serenading raft captain. But here’s my favorite part —

After an hour on the river, we dock at Belinda’s Riverside Restaurant, a rustic gem nestled by the Rio Grande. How does this place even exist in the middle of nowhere? Turns out Belinda and team hike a couple of hours across the hills, ingredients in tow, to set up shop each time, serving up Jamaican-style curry goat and fish (take your pick: fried, steamed, or escoveitched). Prepared with love and served alongside rice or bammy. One of my best meals in Jamaica. Call ahead to make sure Belinda’s is open on the day you visit.

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.
