Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. In 2024, she published her first children’s book “Livro do Não”, which she illustrated with embroidery.

Carnevale in Ottana, Sardinia (February 15 and 17, 2026) offers a captivating journey into the town's rich traditions and cultural heritage. Led by a renowned photographer, this exclusive experience immerses you in an atmosphere alive with sound, symbolism and community spirit. The festival is characterized by the iconic figures of Bues and Merdules, who perform an ancient ritual dance.

Your day begins with a visit to the local museum to explore the intricately crafted masks that define Ottana’s Carnevale. The Carnevale of Ottana stands out for its rare blend of mystery, ritual, and celebration rooted in Sardinia's ancient agro-pastoral and pagan traditions. At its core is a unique convergence of folklore, myth and history to create a sacred yet festive atmosphere.

Central to the Carnevale are the Boes and Merdules, whose wooden masks and rhythmic cowbells reenact the bond between humans and animals, preserving rituals passed down for millennia. The figure of Sa Filonzana, the "old woman" played by a man, embodies the Carnevale's theme of inversion and renewal, reflecting the cyclical nature of life and the reversal of social roles central to this tradition.

Faroe Islands

I’m seduced by the untouched beauty and drama of the Faroe Islands. Driving into Tórshavn, I witness a rare Faroese sight.

The ocean is bright red. The beach is packed with onlookers. It’s a grindadráp, a pilot whale hunt. Heavily regulated, it’s being carried out with process perfected over millennia. A local couple points out their son to me, he is on one of the boats — “unless we send a boat, we won’t get our share of the whale meat.”

When a school of pilot whales is sighted, boats gather around and slowly drive them towards the chosen bay or beach, for it’s illegal to kill the whales in the open sea. This time, there are about two hundred of them. Every bit of them will be consumed or used — and none can be sold.

I’m shocked, outraged, fascinated, caught up in the excitement and terribly conflicted. As a traveler, I respect — and seek to understand — culture and tradition. And the Faroese are holding on to this one — as it symbolizes for them their relationship with the sea.

Culture Shock

Jamaica

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.

Music in the Air

A walk along the oceanfront to the Castle of San Sebastián in Cádiz is a captivating experience that combines stunning coastal views, rich history, and the serene beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the small La Caleta Beach, the castle stands at the end of a long promenade stretching out into the sea. Built on a small islet, the Castle of San Sebastián has protected Cádiz since the 18th century and now offers visitors a chance to explore its ancient fortifications while enjoying panoramic ocean views.

Highlights of the Oceanfront Walk:

1. La Caleta Beach: Begin your walk at La Caleta, one of Cádiz’s most picturesque beaches. With its golden sands and calm waters, this spot is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a refreshing dip. The beach is framed by the Castle of San Sebastián and Castle of Santa Catalina, creating a beautiful coastal scene.

2. The Promenade: The scenic walkway leading to the castle is a peaceful stretch, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic on both sides. As you walk along, you’ll feel the cool ocean breeze and hear the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore.

3. Castle of San Sebastián: Once you reach the castle, explore its fortifications and take in the sense of history that surrounds you. Originally built as a defensive structure, the castle is now used for cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts, and provides a spectacular vantage point for watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

4. Sunset Views: The castle's location offers one of the best spots in Cádiz for viewing the sunset. The golden light reflecting on the water and the ancient walls creates a magical atmosphere.

Tip: Visit during the evening to catch the sunset, and don’t forget your camera for some stunning coastal shots! Entrance to the castle is often free, but check for events that may add to your visit.

Oceaside Walk to San Sebastián

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

The Dom Luís I Bridge and Gaia Cable Car are celebrated icons of Porto, representing the harmony of industrial ingenuity and aesthetic grace. This double-deck metal arch bridge, connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, alongside the adjacent cable car, offers a unique perspective of the city's landscape. Top 5 highlights:

4. The bridge is not just a transport link but a cultural symbol of Porto. It represents the city's industrial past and its evolution into a modern urban center. Its presence in numerous local festivals and celebrations highlights its importance in the city's cultural life.
5. For photography enthusiasts, both the bridge and cable car provide unmatched opportunities. The bridge's design against the Porto skyline and the aerial views from the cable car are perfect for capturing the essence of Porto's scenic beauty.
Tickets for the Cable Car can be purchased on site. The best time to visit the bridge and take the cable car is during the late afternoon when the setting sun bathes the city in golden hues. The combination of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Gaia Cable Car offers a memorable experience.
