The experience begins Luca’s family home in the heart of Mamoiada. After a brief introduction in this 19th-century house, you’ll head to the vineyard just outside the village—a landscape shaped by vines, granite, and centuries of tradition.

There, among Cannonau rows and sweeping hills, stands a nuraghe: a prehistoric stone tower built by Sardinia’s ancient people, still intact after thousands of years. Beside it is a small farmhouse and a wooden patio overlooking the vines—your table for a guided tasting of three wines, including Luca’s rare Cannonau Bianco, made from an ancient cross between Cannonau and Gallòpu.

This white grape, known as Gallòpu, is now produced only by Luca in all of Barbagia. The tasting is followed by a traditional lunch: local appetizers, handmade ravioli with ragù, and slow-cooked sheep stew—a moment of pure Sardinian depth.

Luca is the only winemaker in Barbagia producing Gallòpu, an ancient white grape once nearly lost. His Cannonau Bianco is not just rare—it’s a symbol of his vision: to innovate without erasing the past, to make wines that speak both of place and of intention.

Alongside him is his father, who still tends the vines with the same hands that shaped them decades ago. Their work isn’t rushed; it follows the rhythm of the soil, the altitude, the granite. After living in Oaxaca for eight years and working at the Textile Museum of Oaxaca, she developed a deep connection to the region’s textile traditions and the communities who sustain them.

She invites visitors to slow down, get their hands involved, and experience craft from the inside. Whether through textiles or ceramics, the focus is on learning directly from artisans – understanding materials, techniques, and the stories behind them. This 7-day journey from Santiago to Mendoza is shaped by contrast and elevation. It begins with design and architecture in Chile’s capital, followed by coastal color along the Pacific, before turning toward the Andes for one of South America’s most iconic mountain crossings. DAY 1 – SANTIAGO BY DESIGN | Your journey begins with a full-day guided architectural tour through Santiago’s historic civic center. Plazas, neighborhoods, and contemporary landmarks reveal how the city has evolved through politics, innovation, and design. After the tour, the evening is yours to explore on foot from your central base. Staying in a walkable district allows you to settle in and experience Santiago at street level.
DAY 2 – VALPARAÍSO AND VIÑA DEL MAR | Today is a guided day trip to the coast, combining fine art, street murals, and wine tasting. DAY 4 – ACROSS THE ANDES TO MENDOZA | Today is dedicated to the crossing itself. You follow the Caracoles Road, a series of dramatic switchbacks climbing toward the Chile-Argentina border. Stops at Laguna del Inca and viewpoints along the way reveal the scale of the Andes, and Aconcagua appears as you descend into Argentina. After border formalities, you arrive in Mendoza by early evening and settle into your new base.
DAY 5 – MENDOZA WINE AND CRAFT | The morning begins with a guided wine and olive oil experience in the Mendoza countryside, combining tastings with a relaxed seasonal lunch. How Not to be Templed Out.

Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late.

Dramatic: Lovrijenac Fortress

This city known for its wine is just gorgeous. Though hot in summer, it is stunning! Definitely worth a visit and if you have time the surroundings small town also known for their wine. 

In Bordeaux, be sure to walk down rue sainte Catherine, the longest pedestrian street in Europe! There will be plenty of shopping to do, and the main square with the cathedral is also a must see. The bell tower is not attached to the church and is able to be climbed for gorgeous views.

Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, translating to "Workshop of semi-precious stones", represents much more than its name suggests. Founded in 1588 by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici, this museum showcases exquisite objects made from stone and is a leading center for marble inlay and art restoration. Top 3 reasons to visit:
1 - The Opificio delle Pietre Dure's origin lies in the establishment of a court-funded laboratory by Ferdinando I de' Medici. Initially focused on semi-precious mosaic work and inlays, the art form was notably used in the decoration of the Cappella dei Principi in the Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Medici family's final resting place. Over centuries, the workshop evolved, adapting to changing artistic tastes and eventually becoming a premier restoration workshop for a wide range of materials, not just stone inlay​​​​.
2 - The museum displays its collection thematically, focusing on the progression of "commesso fiorentino". You can explore artworks from various periods, starting with the Medici era to the mid-1800s. The upper floors offer insights into the craftsman’s techniques with stone samples, workbenches, tools, and production phases of intarsia and inlay work. The museum's compact size allows you to absorb the fusion of art and technique within about an hour, particularly appealing to those fascinated by the expressiveness and vibrancy of stones in art​​.
3 -The museum's first section showcases archaeological marbles from Cosimo de’ Medici’s private collection, accompanied by sculptures and furniture adorned with semi-precious stones. Il Duomo di Milano, a symbol of Milan's grandeur, stands as a testament to Gothic architecture. Why should you visit?
1 - Dominating Milan's skyline, the Duomo's 135 spires, including the iconic Madonnina spire, create a stunning silhouette. The Madonnina, a polychrome sculpture created by Giuseppe Perego in 1762, rests atop the tallest spire at a breathtaking height of 108 meters. 
2 - Il Duomo is adorned with over 3,400 statues, the largest collection on any building globally. Notable is the statue of the Madonnina covered in 3,900 pieces of gold leaf. Inside, the vast interior can hold up to 40,000 visitors, with enormous stone pillars and niches housing a staggering 3,159 images. 

3 - The cathedral boasts fifty-five windows, including some of the largest stained glass in Europe, mainly created during the 15th and 16th centuries. The New Testament window, a masterpiece of Lombard craftsmanship, is particularly renowned. These windows display intricate designs and vibrant colors, illuminating biblical stories and adding an ethereal quality to the cathedral's interior​​​​.

4 - One of Il Duomo's unique features is its accessible rooftop. Visitors can ascend (by stairs or elevator) to this rooftop terrace, offering close-up views of the spires, pinnacles, and flying buttresses. Chile’s Tara Salt Flats (Salar de Tara), located in the Atacama Desert, is a breathtaking, otherworldly landscape of vast white salt plains, towering rock formations, and flamingo-filled lagoons. Situated at an altitude of over 4,300 meters (14,100 feet), this remote destination offers breathtaking panoramic views, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers. The journey to Salar de Tara, through volcanic plains and surreal rock formations, is just as spectacular as the destination itself.


1. Expansive salt plains, stretching endlessly beneath the deep blue sky, create a dramatic and surreal contrast for photography.

2. The Monks of the Pacana (Los Monjes de la Pacana)—towering volcanic rock formations sculpted by erosion—resemble silent guardians in the desert.

3. Lagunas filled with flamingos, where Andean, James, and Chilean flamingos wade through shallow waters, offering incredible wildlife photography opportunities.

4. Panoramic views of the Andes and surrounding volcanoes, including the mighty Licancabur Volcano, provide an unforgettable backdrop.

5. Remote, untouched nature, far from tourist crowds, makes this an ideal spot for peaceful exploration and reflection.

Visitor Tip: Due to the high altitude and rough terrain, it’s best to visit with a guided 4x4 tour. Bring warm layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water to combat the harsh desert conditions.

Tara Salt Flats

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Pinacoteca di Brera is one of Milan's most prestigious art galleries, housing a significant collection of Italian and foreign art from the 13th to the 20th century. Located in the Palazzo di Brera, which dates back to the late Baroque period and was built on the remains of a 14th-century monastery, the Pinacoteca shares its space with the Academy of Fine Arts. Why is this a cool place to visit?
Historical Significance: The gallery was born out of a political action, distinct from other major Italian museums that originated from private collections of monarchs or noble families. The Brera Gallery was officially established in 1809, although its first collection existed from 1776 alongside the Accademia di Belle Arti, instituted by Maria Theresa of Austria. 

Notable Masterpieces: The Pinacoteca di Brera's collection includes several world-renowned masterpieces. Some of the top paintings housed in the gallery are "The Marriage of the Virgin" by Raphael, "The Feast in the House of Simon" by Paolo Veronese, "Supper at Emmaus" by Caravaggio, "Last Supper" by Peter Paul Rubens, and "The Kiss" by Francesco Hayez. Each of these works represents a significant period in art history and exemplifies the artistic mastery of their creators​​​​.You also have the opportunity to appreciate the meticulous restoration and preservation of artworks not presently showcased, through the glass walls of the gallery.
