On this exclusive deep dive into the connections between Zen Buddhism and the tea ceremony, Zen art history expert Eric Luong takes you to the Jotenkaku Museum, part of Shokoku-ji Temple, to explore its collection. Eric will give you a curated tour of the museum’s vast cultural treasures created by Zen priests and followers.

After gaining an understanding of Zen Buddhism through its artwork, you’ll move to a 100-year-old machiya townhouse to take part in an exclusive private tea ceremony that demonstrates the concepts you explored at the museum. This 4-hour cooking class shares Valparaíso's culinary legacy through four dishes celebrating the fusion of Chilean heritage and European influences from when the seaport was at its heyday. The cooking experience and wine pairing take place in the home of Al Ramirez, a sommelier and street artist from Valparaíso. In keeping with the spirit of "sobremesa", the cherished Chilean tradition of lingering around the table, the experience is unhurried and focuses as much on human stories as kitchen secrets. 

You'll start with every Porteño's favorite sharer—Calugas de Pescado, a platter of fried fish drizzled with lemon. Machas a la Parmesana (baked razor clams) follow suit while a pasta dish fusing Chilean and Italian techniques simmers on the stove. Dobladitas (French-inspired bread) served with pebre (Chilean salsa) or manjar (dulce de leche) completes the experience. Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. With Marie and Manuel, you won’t just receive a collection of beautiful portraits from your time in Mexico City—you’ll also get to know the city more intimately and feel at home.

In this experience, your guide Rio will introduce you to Asagaya, a quiet neighborhood of western Tokyo where the pace of change has been much slower than in the central city. This is Rio’s neighborhood where he’s learned the names and faces of shopkeepers, artists, and regular customers and is happy to introduce them to visitors.

You’ll stroll along the shotengai, an old shopping street where locals would spend their leisure time browsing shops, eating snacks, and greeting neighborhood friends. 

You’ll enjoy a retro-style lunch at an old shop specializing in okonomiyaki, a savory pancake before exploring the unique shops along the shotengai including a knife shop, tea shop, and a second-hand kimono shop. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to meet and converse with shopkeepers, and learn more about the rich history of the Asagaya area.

You will conclude your tour at a standing sake bar for drinks and conversation, and perhaps share a friendly “kampai!” cheers with new friends.

Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. DAY 4 – FOOD, BOATS, AND SHADOW PUPPETS | Spend the day discovering Istanbul through its food. Visit the Spice Bazaar, then take a ferry to the Asian side, where you’ll continue by minibus and taste dishes in local markets. In the afternoon, join a traditional Karagöz shadow puppetry workshop and learn about this centuries-old art form.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. For most visitors, the Algarve conjures images of beaches and seafood. But João’s Algarve is more textured—what he calls the “poetic Algarve.” He cites writers like Sofia de Melo Breyner Andresen and José Saramago, who captured the soul of the region in images of sunsets, fruit, wind, and silence. For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Travelers are interested in how we live, how we spend the day, what we do.” This itinerary is João’s answer to that challenge: an immersive route where nature, food, craft, and memory guide the pace.

Jamaica

The Man Who Built the Coolest Bar in the World. That would be a Jamaican fisherman from Saint Elizabeth called Floyd who thought it would be nice to have a place where he and his buddies could hang out to and from their fishing ventures. He built the bar on a sandbar a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay out of driftwood (the wood was restored after Hurricane Ivan in 2004). In between dips in the turquoise water, you can sip a Red Stripe, eat freshly grilled snapper and play dominoes. Or catch up with Floyd at the bar. Someday, I’d like to watch the sunset from there.

Boat Trip to Pelican Bar

The Vasari Corridor, an elevated kilometer-long passageway, is a symbol of the Medici family's influence in Renaissance Florence. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici in 1565, this corridor connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, offering a unique journey through Florence's history, art, and architecture. Top 5 reasons to take this stroll:
1 - Designed by Giorgio Vasari, the corridor was constructed to allow the Medici family to move freely and safely between their residence in Palazzo Pitti and the government headquarters in Palazzo Vecchio. This architectural marvel, completed in just five months, includes small windows overlooking the streets and the Arno River. 

2 - As you walk through the corridor, you are surrounded by an exquisite collection of artwork, mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a unique collection of artists' self-portraits. This collection, one of the most complete in Europe, was started by Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici in the 17th century. 

3 - The corridor has witnessed both tragic and triumphant moments in Florence's history. In 1993, a section of the corridor was heavily damaged by a terrorist attack commissioned by the Italian mafia, destroying several artworks. These damaged paintings have been pieced back together and displayed as a reminder of this dark chapter in the city's history​​.

4 - The section over Ponte Vecchio offers breathtaking views of the Arno River and the city. In 1939, Benito Mussolini ordered the enlargement of the corridor's windows for Adolf Hitler's visit, allowing an even more impressive vista. This panoramic view was reportedly so admired by Hitler that he ordered Ponte Vecchio to be spared from bombing during World War II​​.

5 - The corridor concludes with a view of the Church of Santa Felicita, where the Medici attended Holy Mass from a privileged vantage point.

Piazzale Michelangelo Sunset

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!

The structure, hidden over the centuries by surrounding buildings, was rediscovered in 1814 and fully unearthed in 1938 during a demolition.

Juliet’s House in Verona, Italy, is an attraction that draws romantics from all over the world. In the heart of Verona, this 13th-century building is famously associated with Juliet Capulet, the beloved character from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” While the story itself is fictional, the house has become a symbol of love and passion, capturing the imagination of visitors with its romantic ambiance and historical charm. A visit to Juliet’s House offers a unique glimpse into the world of Shakespearean romance, combined with the allure of Verona’s medieval architecture.

Juliet’s House in Verona

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Nestled between the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the vast Sahara, Agdz is a small yet historically rich town that serves as the gateway to the stunning Draa Valley. Once an important stop along the ancient trans-Saharan trade routes, this region is renowned for its lush palm groves, traditional kasbahs, and breathtaking desert landscapes. Whether you're drawn by history, nature, or photography, Agdz and the Draa Valley offer an unforgettable experience of southern Morocco’s beauty and heritage.

1. The Draa River winds through the valley, creating a striking contrast between the golden desert dunes and the lush greenery of date palm oases. It’s one of Morocco’s most picturesque landscapes.

2. A 17th-century fortress called Kasbah des Caïds stands in Agdz, offering visitors a glimpse into Morocco’s past with its beautifully preserved mudbrick architecture and panoramic rooftop views.

Agdz & the Draa Valley

Portugal’s Almendres Cromlech, located near Évora in the Alentejo region, is one of the largest and oldest megalithic sites in Europe. Dating back over 7,000 years, this Neolithic stone circle predates Stonehenge and offers a fascinating glimpse into Portugal’s prehistoric past. Surrounded by rolling hills and cork oak forests, this mystical site remains a place of intrigue, believed to have been used for astronomical observations, rituals, and social gatherings.


1. Nearly 100 standing stones, arranged in elliptical and circular formations, some engraved with ancient symbols and carvings.

2. Stunning natural setting, with the Alentejo countryside providing a peaceful and remote atmosphere, ideal for quiet reflection and photography.

3. Alignment with the solstices, suggesting that the site may have been an early astronomical observatory or a place for seasonal rituals.

4. Nearby Almendres Menhir, a single monolithic stone standing over 3 meters (10 feet) tall, likely connected to the cromlech’s spiritual or ceremonial function.

5. Lack of crowds, offering a more intimate experience compared to other megalithic sites, allowing visitors to explore freely and feel a deeper connection to the past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunrise or sunset for a magical experience with soft golden light. The site is accessible via a dirt road, so a car with good clearance is recommended. Combine your visit with a trip to Évora, a UNESCO-listed city rich in history and culture.
