This half-day experience with women from the Shipibo-Konibo community of the Peruvian Amazon takes place minutes from the historic center of Lima, in the district of Rímac. After a short drive, you step into a living Amazonian culture in an urban setting, spending time chatting with artisan women over a basket of jungle fruits and taking part in an art workshop.

Over the past 25 years, people from the Shipibo-Konibo ethnic group have migrated from the jungle in search of economic opportunities while preserving their traditions, art, and language. Your experience begins with a warm welcome from a local artisan in her home, who introduces you to the meanings behind her intricate designs. These sacred patterns, known as “kené,” are inspired by nature and the life of the Shipibo-Konibo people in the Amazon. You then take part in a hands-on art workshop, learning to paint using natural pigments traditionally made from tree bark and plants.

You might not know that it is possible to encounter the Indigenous cultures of Amazonian Peru in the capital. Migration from Ucayali and other Amazon regions has been ongoing for decades. 

This experience offers a rare opportunity to meet members of the Shipibo-Konibo community in the intimate setting of a practicing artisan’s home. Milagro Campos Llontop, Mila, is a Lima-based cultural guide, artist, and educator with over ten years of experience in heritage interpretation and socially responsible tourism. She studied Drawing and Painting at the National School of Fine Arts of Lima and holds a specialization in Sustainable Tourism.

She has worked at several museums and archaeological sites across Lima as a local guide and educational program designer and is one of the few official tour guides in the city specializing in Indigenous Folk Art. In 2022, Mila founded an art experience project in collaboration with master women artisans from the Shipibo-Konibo Amazonian community based in Lima. Working directly with the president of the community, the project supports cultural revitalization and generates direct economic income for more than 200 master women artisans. 

Japan

This experience is a rare, personal, realistic look into the everyday life of a maiko — a young trainee preparing to become a full-fledged geisha, or geiko as they are known in Kyoto. Maiko train within a highly structured professional system shaped by formal rules, mentorship and etiquette. Rather than watching a performance, you’ll engage in conversation facilitated by an expert guide. The objective? To move past rituals and gain a deeper understanding of the person.

The experience takes place in an elegant bar in central Kyoto. While waiting for the maiko, your host explains how the maiko–geiko world is organized and offers guidance for a meaningful conversation.

When the maiko joins, a cocktail is served as you speak with her about daily routines, training demands, her personal story including the decisions and commitments involved. As the conversation comes to a close, there's time for photographs. After the maiko departs, you stay for a second cocktail and a brief reflection.

Most maiko and geisha encounters center on performance: dance, music, tea ceremony, or formal dinner entertainment. This experience is different in both intent and structure. It is designed as a conversation — an opportunity to understand maiko training as a real, professional path.

Your host, Ayumi, focuses on context and clarity, helping frame questions in culturally appropriate and genuinely open ways. This allows the maiko to speak about her daily routines, discipline, and choices within a demanding system that balances inherited tradition with contemporary life.

There are no performances in this experience. Your guide Ayumi will meet you in front of the bar entrance, outside Villa Sanjo Muromachi. It is about a 5-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station on the Karasuma (green) Line.

Your host Ayumi is a highly-experienced Kyoto area guide with the deep relationships required to be able to make a rare experience like this possible as a private event. Ayumi is an expert in many of Kyoto's traditions, including Japanese gardens, incense, and food. Mexico

This walk is designed for your first day in Mérida. It shows how the city was built, layer by layer.

You begin at Parque Hidalgo, where the city’s history is in view — from its origins as the Maya city of T’hó to the Spanish settlement in the 16th century. From there, you walk to the Church of the Third Order that stands as a record of how colonial power reshaped the city.

You continue to Plaza Principal and enter Palacio de Gobierno where Fernando Castro Pacheco’s dramatic murals trace Yucatán’s history. The route passes the Catedral de San Ildefonso, one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. When open, you step inside Tren Maya Museum to see artifacts uncovered during construction of the new railway.

You then visit Casa de Montejo, whose carved façade remains one of the city’s clearest statements of colonial authority. The walk ends with a stop at Mérida’s oldest sorbetería and time in a local market, where residents shop for traditional clothing and festival regalia.

This pre-Hispanic libation was used in sowing and harvesting ceremonies and also consumed by Zapotec kings. It’s made from corn, cacao, flor de rosita, toasted mamey pits, and water in a massive clay pot. It’s traditionally served in a painted bowl known as a jícara.

We’ll then enjoy fresh tejate and a snack with this tejatera in her home. Finally, we’ll walk to a restaurant for a set sampler meal of traditional delicacies. This venue is located in the courtyard of another local family home, and sits under a canopy of branches, which are key to producing the blooms in the tejate process.

While the host has lived in Oaxaca for a decade, five of those years have been spent in this Zapotec community. Here, she has forged meaningful connections with locals and can speak to how the town voluntarily operates under Indigenous usos y costumbres law, as well as the annual tejate festival. That said, the specifics of this tradition will be shared by an expert local who has inherited her skills from a long line of tejate makers.

Located roughly 20 minutes from Oaxaca de Juárez, this scenic pueblo offers a glimpse of traditional village life—locals working the fields, burros carrying firewood, and adobe makers crafting custom earthen bricks. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Catania's fish market, known locally as "A Piscaria," is the heart of the city. It’s loud, it’s surprising, it’s humbling, it’s real. Colours, fragrances, and market place shouting.

A visit to Catania's fish market allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, adding a unique and flavorful element to your Sicily travels.

The fish market comes to life in the early morning, around 5.30 a.m., when the fishmongers arrive. But from around 7.30 a.m., the market offers a more calm environment; it's easier to roam among the booths, and soak up the environment.

This 13th-century dodecagonal tower was originally built by the Almohads as a military watchtower and was later used to control access to the river. Its name, “Tower of Gold,” is believed to stem from the golden gleam it once reflected off the river or possibly from the gold brought from the New World that was stored in its vaults.
