This hands-on experience invites you to learn the art of traditional basket weaving from a fifth-generation artisan in his home workshop. You'll learn about the origins of his creative practice and make your own piece to take home, with his expert guidance throughout the process.

Basketry was one of the earliest crafts in Mesoamerica, predating the domestication of crops and handmade ceramics. Because this practice uses biodegradable materials, few historical remnants remain—so its history lives on through family traditions and storytelling. By learning about the skill, time, and dedication involved in creating these baskets, you'll help support local artisans through both financial investment and cultural preservation.

Your basket-making workshop will last roughly two hours. Afterward, you’ll continue the carrizo theme with a meal at a restaurant that serves Oaxacan tlayudas on handwoven carrizo plates.

Chile

Round off a day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valparaíso by experiencing an authentic asado chileno with a local guide and grill master born and raised in the seaport. This three-hour barbecue experience is a personal invitation to partake in a beloved food experience rooted in convivencia (togetherness). Upon arrival at Juan Víctor’s family residence, you will be greeted with homemade empanadas and a pisco sour (Chile’s national cocktail). Chorizo sausages and premium cuts of beef are slowly cooked over an open flame, allowing plenty of time to chat with Juan Víctor over a glass of Carménère wine. 

In the sprit of convivencia, you are likely to be joined by some of Juan Víctor's relatives, friends, and neighbors. Together, you will bite into sizzling choripanes (chorizo sausages served on crusty marraqueta bread) and strips of meat fresh from the grill. The conversation will flow and you will return to your hotel with a full stomach and a happy heart. 

This experience invites you to partake in a traditional Chilean barbecue with a porteño and his family in Valparaíso. Juan Víctor’s mission is to introduce you to the highest-quality meat (or plant-based alternatives) in the relaxed, intimate environment of a local household. This is a cultural exchange whereby every item is shared, all questions are welcome, and the conversation has no boundaries. As a passionate asador (grill master), Juan Víctor is thrilled to share tidbits about Chilean food and wine. But he will also use this time to chat about the wider aspect of Chilean culture and his lived experience as porteño. On most occasions, some of Juan Víctor's relatives, friends, and neighbors will join the asado — making this a thoroughly sociable affair.

As the guest of honor, you are invited to participate in the cooking as much or as little as you wish. You may assist with preparing pebre (salsa) and tending to the grill, or simply sit back and unwind with your new friends.

The experience begins with a guided visit of the palace led by an official specialist from the Casa de Mateus Foundation. You'll explore the grand salons, chapel, and gardens that reflect centuries of aristocratic life. Following the visit, sit down for a lunch served in the palace’s original kitchen—an atmospheric setting that preserves the soul of the house. The three-course meal highlights regional ingredients and is paired with wines from the Douro Valley. The kitchen, with its original stonework and antique copper tools, evokes generations of domestic life at Mateus.

While guided tours of Casa de Mateus are available to the public, this experience offers a more intimate, expanded version — led by an institutional expert who provides in-depth context and access to select rooms not typically included in standard visits. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection.
