remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

DAY 3 – RUINS AND REFLECTION | Travel to Ercolano for The Interrupted City, a guided walk through Herculaneum’s remarkably preserved ruins. Michele brings this frozen world to life, tracing the moments of ordinary existence captured beneath volcanic ash — a baker’s oven, carved wood, painted walls. Having a background in biology, coming to the Galapagos was absolutely a bucket list trip. The trip is worth going if you have three to seven days, depending on how much you want to see. I was there for three days and I could have discovered more islands. 

It is important to have a tour guide as you are not allowed to venture outside the town without one.

The trip of a lifetime!

Casa Pilatos is one of our favorite places in Seville. Nestled in the historic Santa Cruz district, it’s a paragon of Andalusian architecture, blending Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance styles into a stunning palatial residence. It’s a 16th-century edifice that serves as a living museum, showcasing the grandeur of Sevillian nobility. Today, it remains a semi-private residence, partly inhabited by the 18th Duchess of Medinaceli and her family. Here are the Top things to check out:
1. Enter through a Renaissance-style marble gate to discover a courtyard adorned with a collection of busts from Roman emperors to Spanish kings, set against the backdrop of exquisite azulejo tiles. The palace's architectural fusion is evident in every corner, from its ornate Gothic Mudejar style to Italian Renaissance innovations​​.
2. The Praetor’s Room stands as the palace's heart, echoing Pilate's Palace in Jerusalem with its detailed coffered ceiling and intricate stucco carved arches, enveloping visitors in a tapestry of historical and aesthetic grandeur​​.
3. Gardens of Serenity: Casa Pilatos is also celebrated for its lush, Italian-style gardens, comprising a large main garden and a smaller, intimate space. Both gardens, accessible from the main courtyard, offer a tranquil retreat with their blooming flowers, manicured orange trees, and picturesque fountains​​.
4. The Staircase to the Heavens: Known as "Seville's first and most magnificent staircase," this architectural gem features azulejo tiling, a Mudéjar honeycomb ceiling, and leads to the more private quarters of the palace. Although the upper floors are typically closed to visitors, the staircase itself is a marvel worth admiring​​​​.

Casa Pilatos

Balos Lagoon is a breathtakingly beautiful beach on the northwestern coast of Crete, known for its turquoise waters, pink-tinged sands, and striking natural scenery. Surrounded by rugged hills, this idyllic spot is accessible by a scenic hike or a boat ride, making it a perfect destination for those seeking an escape into nature’s finest.
1. The lagoon’s shallow turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and ideal for families with children.
2. Its unique pink sand, created by crushed shells, adds a surreal touch to the beach.
3. The area offers a stunning contrast between the vivid water, white sand, and dramatic rocky terrain.
4. Visitors can hike down to the beach, enjoying panoramic views along the way.
5. For a more leisurely approach, ferries from Kissamos provide easy access to this natural paradise.

Balos Lagoona

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Old Blue Doors

Morocco

Rising from the desert plains like a vision from another time, Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most iconic and well-preserved ksars (fortified villages). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning earthen settlement along the former trans-Saharan trade route has been a backdrop for countless films and TV series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. With its towering mudbrick kasbahs, labyrinthine alleys, and breathtaking mountain views, Aït Benhaddou is a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and culture enthusiasts.

1. A walk through the ancient ksar winds past traditional mudbrick homes, narrow alleyways, and merchant stalls, offering a glimpse into centuries-old Moroccan architecture and way of life.

2. A steep climb to the granary at the top rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and the winding Ounila River, making it a perfect spot for photography.

3. A visit to a family home inside the ksar provides an intimate look at how locals maintain and preserve these historic structures, keeping Berber traditions alive.

4. A crossing over the shallow river on foot or by donkey adds to the adventure, especially in spring when the water level rises and the kasbah reflects beautifully in the water.

5. A golden-hour glow at sunset bathes the mudbrick walls in warm hues, creating an unforgettable scene that makes Aït Benhaddou one of the most photogenic spots in Morocco.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for pleasant temperatures. Arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon helps avoid crowds and offers the best lighting for photos. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended for climbing the steep paths. Bringing cash is useful for small entry fees, souvenirs, and local cafés, as card payments are rarely accepted.

Aït Benhaddou

Namibia

The stuff that dreams are made of! Photographers’ dreams, and travelers’ dreams. Surreal and in shades of orange. “Vlei” is Afrikaans for a depression filled with water - well, it was once - but as the name suggests, this vlei has been dry for a very long time.

Cork in São Brás de Alportel

Stintino, a small fishing village in northwest Sardinia, is home to La Pelosa Beach, often regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean.
