Inside UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hospicio Cabañas, he painted fifty-seven monumental frescoes between 1937 and 1939, including The Man of Fire — a spiraling vision of transformation where Mexico’s history unfolds. 
At the Government Palace, his image of Father Hidalgo — the Prometheus of Mexican Independence — raises a torch of freedom that illuminates the civic heart of the city.

Portugal

This hands-on workshop offers rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts: Bisalhães black pottery, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a small mountain village north of Vila Real, just a few remaining artisans keep this tradition alive.

You’ll step into a rustic, working atelier to see how local earth, fire, and ancestral technique come together to form these matte-black pieces. After a live demonstration of traditional hand-molding, you’ll take a seat at the wheel to shape your own, guided step-by-step by the master potter.

If weather allows, you’ll also witness the outdoor firing process—where pine needles and broom branches are used to stoke the open-air kiln. This method turns raw clay into its distinct black finish, a transformation unchanged for generations. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.

In Bisalhães, black clay pottery has been shaped by hand for centuries—but today, only a few master potters still practice this endangered art. This experience offers rare, personal access to one of them, in a setting far from the commercial workshops of larger towns.

Saddle up for a 1.5-hour horseback trek in the Andes Mountains, carefully timed to coincide with sunset. As the last of the light fades, you will return to the gaucho estate to continue the evening, socializing with the family over a traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) featuring roasted vegetables, salads, fresh bread, and local Mendocinian wine. After dinner, gather around the bonfire with a glass of wine and enjoy a brief folk guitar session—a traditional gaucho touch that brings the night to life under a sky heavy with stars.

This experience includes pickup and return to your hotel in the city of Mendoza. Upon arrival at the mountain ranch, you’ll get acquainted with your horse and receive a brief safety lesson—novices through to experienced riders are accommodated. Step inside a working Buddhist temple in Osaka and spend several hours following the rhythms of a monk’s day. You’ll meet your hosts - a practicing monk who also works as an architect, and Zane, who has spent ten years in Japan studying religious and cultural traditions. Then you’ll change into the traditional robes of a monk and begin a series of mindful rituals.

First, a guided meditation and the practice of shakyo: hand-copying sutras in the form of kanji characters using brush and ink. This is a daily ritual for monks, intended to steady the mind before service. Later, you'll assist with the daily temple tasks, from preparing for festivals to sweeping the temple grounds.

Midday, you’ll share a shojin ryori meal: a simple, seasonal vegetarian lunch prepared in the Buddhist tradition. Zane provides translation, insights and context throughout.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive either a goshuin (temple stamp) or omamori (amulet)—a small marker of your day as a monk in Osaka.

Most introductions to monastic life in Japan take place in rural retreats. This temple is an active religious site in the grid of central Osaka. You’ll speak with the monks about their lives, explore the overlaps and tensions between secular and spiritual paths, and observe how Buddhist tradition is preserved and adapted in a modern context.

The monk who leads the experience also works as an architect. His approach integrates design with ritual. His wife prepares the mid-day meal using principles of shojin ryori passed down through temple tradition. The experience is co-led by a temple monk who also works as an architect. He is passionate about blending modern design with tradition and along with his wife, who was born into a temple family, works to promote Japanese culture by creating various events such as tea ceremonies. 

Your co-host is Zane, a resident of Japan for 10 years originally from New York. His passion for learning about traditional Japanese culture and sharing it with overseas visitors has led him to close collaborations with Japanese people to share unique experiences for visitors to Japan. Zane also practices Japanese calligraphy and has a workshop in Kyoto.

In the South Sardinian countryside, far from crowds and rush, you step into a working textile atelier where time is measured in gestures: spinning, twisting, threading, and weaving. Slowly, by hand. The atelier is set inside a Sardinian medau, a rural homestead typical of the region and inhabited by many families.

The experience is an immersion into sea silk (byssus) and traditional weaving practices, guided by textile artist Arianna Pintus. You learn what byssus is, why it is so rare, and how it is woven through a careful, patient process. The setting is intentionally intimate and quiet: not a “show,” but a respectful approach to a material that asks for presence.

Alongside byssus, Arianna also shares her work with linen, creating a dialogue between natural elements. You leave with a deeper understanding of what “slow making” truly means and with the sense of having touched a fragile, precious thread of Sardinia’s living heritage.

The distinctiveness of this experience lies in the coherence between Arianna’s practice and her way of inhabiting time. Her work with sea silk comes from a recovered chain of knowledge: she sources the material from an existing food supply chain, where it would otherwise be discarded, restoring meaning to a fiber that survives today only through rare and time-intensive practices. She also grows the linen she works with, following its cycle from cultivation to thread and grounding the textile process in direct contact with the land.

Equally distinctive is her decision not to accumulate. Arianna does not produce stock, allowing the pace of making to remain aligned with the slow processes the materials require. This approach keeps the work intentionally slow and sustainable.

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Granada, Spain, is home to the Cathedral and Royal Chapel, two magnificent landmarks that showcase the city's rich history and architectural grandeur. The Granada Cathedral, an impressive masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, stands as a symbol of Catholic Spain’s triumph after the Reconquista. Next to it, the Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) houses the tombs of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, the Catholic Monarchs who completed the unification of Spain.
