Away from the main tourist paths yet right in the heart of the city, these spaces are time capsules of Ottoman commerce and everyday life. İlkin Zeybek, a professional photographer with over a decade of experience in Istanbul, specializes in urban storytelling and cultural documentation. With deep knowledge of the city’s hidden architectural gems, İlkin guides photographers to places that remain untouched by mass tourism.

Japan

The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established traditional Japanese restaurant before heading to the Ifuji Ningyo Shop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher will be a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

This full day experience gives you a rare opportunity to be immersed in the world of Japanese dolls, learning how they are made and getting a chance to participate in the process, and viewing works of art in a museum. The three-hour workshop led by a master artisan is not a rushed, assembly line experience, but a naturally paced opportunity to appreciate the skills required to manufacture these dolls and chat with the artisan about their work.

While many centers of traditional crafts are located far from Tokyo in difficult-to-reach locations, Iwatsuki is conveniently accessible by train in Saitama Prefecture, just an hour from central Tokyo, making it a perfect way to spend a day experiencing a unique aspect of Japanese culture.

Outside of the ticket gates inside Iwatsuki Station. Iwatsuki Station is on the Tobu Urban Park Line, most easily accessible from Tokyo by transferring at Omiya Station. You will meet Hiro at the station at 10:30am and he will return you to the station after the experience around 5:30pm.

Hiro Miyaoka is a Saitama native with a deep knowledge of the local culture. After a 38-year career as a high school social studies teacher, he transitioned into tour guiding, leveraging his passion and expertise for history, culture and education to serve his guests. Hiro's knowledge of local traditions and his skills in storytelling makes him the perfect ambassador to share the charms of Saitama's traditional industries with both domestic and international guests.

Chile

Try your hand at making a "lucky" clay pig known as a Chanchito in the intimate studio of a local artist near Valparaíso. No prior experience is necessary and this 1.5-hour crafting experience is perfect for children and adults of all ages. 

Chanchitos are three-legged pigs which are typically made in the village of Pomaire in Chile. This art experience uses a special type of clay which is easy to work with and dries quickly, meaning the finished Chanchito is ready to take away on the day. Over the course of the workshop, you will hear the history of the Chanchito and their significance in Chile. 

You'll also enjoy an inspirational view of the Pacific Ocean from Marcela's private terrace while enjoying soft refreshments and local pastries. If you're lucky, you may even get to sample "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

This fun pottery activity is relaxed and accessible to novice sculptors and potters of all ages. The finished Chanchito is small enough to slip into even the smallest bag and may be kept for yourself or gifted to a loved one back home to bring them luck. While you work, Marcela will explain the history behind these three-legged pigs typically made in Pomaire. She will share further insight on the development of Chilean art and crafts from pre-Columbian times to the modern day as well as mythological stories. While in her studio, you can check out what she is currently working on and hear about her artistic achievements.

Marcela's studio is attached to her home above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concon, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This area is often skipped by international tourists which means you get to experience a truly local community. To conclude your trip to Concon, Marcela will recommend local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

You will meet at Marcela's art studio in the Higuerillas hamlet in Concon, near Valparaíso. The exact location is provided after booking.

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

Greece

This walk traces lesser-known paths along the caldera, beyond the main trail most visitors follow. It begins above Oia, where the island opens up to expansive views, then branches off into routes that wind past deserted caves, lava-shaped spires, and small chapels carved into the cliffside. It’s for those who want to see what the typical postcards leave out.

From the ridges of Imerovigli and Firostefani to a secluded stretch near Megalochori, the route connects volcanic outcrops, historic windmills, and viewpoints where the caldera seems to fold into the sky. Each pause brings something different: a lookout known only to locals, a windmill bathing in sunlight, a chapel whose bell waits for no one.

Midway, you’ll stop at a family-run Faros Market to meet its owner — another Maria and her loved ones — known for their warm welcome and home-cooked treats. The walk ends near Akrotiri Lighthouse, where the island seems to exhale into the sea, sharing a picnic at sunset.

Santorini is known for its iconic views, but those views are often shared with large crowds and seen from the same familiar vantage points. This experience offers something different: new angles on the caldera’s magic, along paths where the sea, sky, and volcanic rock unfold without interruption. You won’t follow the main trail—these are alternative routes, rich in detail and atmosphere, where every step reveals a landscape that feels entirely your own.

Maria has walked these paths since childhood. She knows each turn, slope, and chapel by heart. Her knowledge runs deep and she enjoys sharing the spots she holds dear: a rocky outcrop with a rare angle, a chapel tucked into the cliff, a ridge where the light stretches further.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

On a foggy morning as the sun rose over Lake Inle, my boatman took me to the rendezvous point deep inside Inle Lake. Three fishermen sat in their boats with little fires to warm them up. They had promised me the previous evening to do a demonstration of their fishing technique. 

The quintessential pose of the Inle fisherman involves standing at the end of the boat on one leg with the other wrapped around his oar. Inle is a shallow lake and standing wouldn’t let they see the reeds below, they explain. Plus they use their body to propel the boat, leaving their hands free to collect their fishing net. 

Then they throw the cone-shape nets into the water, pressing on it with their foot so it sinks to the bottom where the fish are and traps them in.

If you're looking for an unconventional neighborhood with art galleries, parks to hang out in, and lots of young, trendy people, Newtown is the place for you. I basically spend all my weekends there, drinking coffee, going to book clubs, working at the community kitchen Lentil as Anything, and having a beer at one of the lively bars at night. 

Australians love vintage – which makes Newtown the heaven for vintage clothes, cameras, vinyl records, and much more. I’ve got some new sandals, a polaroid camera, and jewelry, all unique pieces at an amazing price. Worth the hype!

You can easily get there by train, it's just a ride from Town Hall, or simply stay a few days in one of the hostels in Newtown.
