This full-day tour introduces you to the cultural heritage of Chile’s Atacama Desert, the world's driest non-polar desert where landscapes comprise volcanoes, salt flats, geysers, and lagoons. Hosted by Mirko, a bilingual guide, you will venture into remote valleys to learn about the Atacameños (the "people of the region") and explore a little-known archaeological site. The purpose is to connect with the local community and understand how the people of the Atacama have adapted to this demanding yet beautiful environment.

The morning is spent with a community where many individuals hail from the Lickanantay ethnic group. You will walk alongside llama herders while hearing tales about ancient Andean life and how the worldview is upheld. Next, you will oversee a clay-making workshop before dining on a lunch typical of this region. The afternoon is spent at the Tulor Archaeological Site, learning about of the architecture, society, and life of the early Atacameños.

The experience is a rare access invitation to connect with the people who descend from a 10,000-year-old culture steeped in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the cosmos. Once a semi-nomadic tribe, this civilization adapted over the years and developed advanced agricultural techniques.

Mirko first invites you to participate in the typical day of the Lickanantay people by joining a llama herder on a mindful walk during which they'll share stories about their lifestyle. By observing the molding and firing of clay, you'll hear how a connection is forged between people and land. You'll try it for yourself and take away a piece of worked clay. 

After dining on a lunch of quinoa, corn, pataska, and herbs from the highlands, it's time for the history lesson you wish you'd had at school. Predating the Incas, the Tulor Archaeological Site is one of the oldest pre-Columbian sites in the Americas. As you walk amid the adobe ruins, Mirko will explain evidence of social organization and rituals.

You’ll begin with lunch at a local restaurant/cafe, chosen for its connection to the neighborhood. Now you're in the Taisho / Eatly Showa period. Yanaka offers a rare sense of what the city looked and felt like before the skyline rose. Albufera Natural Park lies ten kilometers south of Valencia, a protected wetland where rice fields meet open water behind the Dehesa del Saler sandbar. Since 2020, he has been sharing his expertise through workshops and masterclasses, bringing more people into the world of street photography. His "Slow Photography" philosophy emphasizes patience, immersion, and understanding places before capturing them.

Serralves is more than a museum — it is a complete artistic environment. This tour focuses primarily on the museum complex: its architecture, gardens and outdoor sculptures. The buildings and curated landscapes are artworks in their own right.

You begin at a café with a conversation about the history of this cultural institution. You explore selected interiors, from one of Portugal’s most remarkable Art Deco houses to the minimalist museum wing designed by Álvaro Siza, with its restrained geometry and white planes. This Shinto shrine has a very mystical quality, especially when it’s pitch dark, with no people around. Perfect for long 20-second exposures to capture the light and the shadows. Or “light painting” with a flashlight. 

That’s me brandishing a lightsaber and painting with it  Now imagine this as a Star Wars location for a fight scene. 

In between sets of Torii Gates, there are family shrines which are even more special, complete with miniature Torii, candlesticks and kitsune.

La Scala in Milan is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. It’s a symbol of cultural and historical opulence. Since its opening in 1778, it has been a hallowed ground for opera and ballet, drawing aficionados from around the world. What to look for when visiting:
1 - Since its commission by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, La Scala has been a focal point for Italian opera. Designed by Piermarini, it has premiered works of legendary composers like Bellini and Verdi, and hosted luminaries such as Nureyev and Callas. La Scala's inaugural performance in 1778 was marked by an incident where the chandelier crashed to the ground, fortunately without causing injuries. This dramatic start did not hinder its rise to prominence as a central figure in Milanese culture.

2 - The theater has undergone various renovations that improved acoustics and seating. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior of La Scala is a blend of neoclassical style and modern comforts, with the individual boxes once decorated according to the owner's tastes. The auditorium is adorned with plush red velvet and gilded accents.

3 - Renowned for its near-perfect acoustics, La Scala is a challenging yet prestigious stage for the world’s most talented performers. The acoustics are so fine-tuned that even the type of rope used backstage is chosen for its sound qualities. Eclairs, ratatouille, fromage – mhmm, so yummy – paired with a glass of wine and pleasant company, a French cooking class is a trip for all the senses (and fun, too). We opted for a private cooking class in Paris with Léo, a chef who has cooked in several top restaurants throughout his life. 

The first dish we learned how to cook was a French cheese plate and handmade bread accompanied by filled vine leaves. After that, we learned about French cuisine, the main ingredients, preparation methods, history, and drank some more wine. We learned what ingredients make the French kitchen unique (wine, vinegar, and cheese) and made a delicious ratatouille, one of France's most popular vegetable dishes. 

We read you can also do these courses online, but you have to get the ingredients and tools beforehand. A good option for digital visitors!
