The Venetian Flâneur

A game kit to be completed during the experience, including paper-based activities, a pencil or pen, a notebook, and a small keepsake. Additional tools provided to complete the activities — along with the clipboard used as a writing surface — must be returned at the end of the experience. The experience also includes two stops to enjoy an espresso and taste a cicchetto.

Starting from the village of Marigha,, the trail ascends through terraced farmlands and pine forests to the village of Anraz. Here, you'll visit a modest yet historically significant Jewish synagogue, one of the few remaining in the region, reflecting the area's rich Jewish-Berber heritage. The journey continues through the serene village of Torort, offering insights into traditional Berber life and a glimpse into the villagers’ daily routine.

The Venice Carnevale has deep-rooted origins dating back to the era of the "Serenissima." Argentina

This 4-hour walking tour unravels the political history of Buenos Aires. Taking place in Recoleta and Retiro districts, Silvina's route passes through the most elegant parts of the city. You'll encounter majestic palaces once frequented by the high society of Buenos Aires and hear how they were used. Silvina will spotlight the architects behind each building and share the secrets of the people who resided within, as well as those honored in statues and other monuments. You'll tilt your neck at what was once the tallest skyscraper in Latin America and learn how revolution and wars shaped the city we see today.

Silvina draws your attention to hidden architectural elements and reveals the significance behind them. She details the rise of Peronism under Juan Domingo Perón and his wife Eva "Evita" Perón, as well as the Anti-Peronism movement. The experience concludes at Recoleta Cemetery, circuiting notable graves including the resting place of Evita. There's a mid-experience coffee stop.

This captivating walking tour confronts a topic many avoid: politics, offering rare space to ask the real questions. Silvina's experience threads together various strands of history, showing how her city has been shaped by political movements, revolutions, liberation, wars, women's voices and foreign influences. Always curious about history, stories, communication, languages, and cultures, Silvina Woodgate's broad range of interests lend themselves to immersing visitors in the full spectrum of Buenos Aires. Having studied English teaching, translation, literature, and social communication at university, Silvina has worked as a freelance teacher and translator of English for more than 20 years. Her students are just as varied as her interests, and include playwrights, artists, students, designers, and journalists. 

She has worked as a translator for the Government of Buenos Aires in addition to local companies and publishers, specializing in the arts, theater, and popular social science. In addition to history, she’s passionate about drama and literature—particularly contemporary female writers—and travel. She has traveled extensively throughout the Americas and Europe.

Chile

Try your hand at making a "lucky" clay pig known as a Chanchito in the intimate studio of a local artist near Valparaíso. No prior experience is necessary and this 1.5-hour crafting experience is perfect for children and adults of all ages. 

Chanchitos are three-legged pigs which are typically made in the village of Pomaire in Chile. This art experience uses a special type of clay which is easy to work with and dries quickly, meaning the finished Chanchito is ready to take away on the day. Over the course of the workshop, you will hear the history of the Chanchito and their significance in Chile. 

You'll also enjoy an inspirational view of the Pacific Ocean from Marcela's private terrace while enjoying soft refreshments and local pastries. If you're lucky, you may even get to sample "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

This fun pottery activity is relaxed and accessible to novice sculptors and potters of all ages. The finished Chanchito is small enough to slip into even the smallest bag and may be kept for yourself or gifted to a loved one back home to bring them luck. While you work, Marcela will explain the history behind these three-legged pigs typically made in Pomaire. She will share further insight on the development of Chilean art and crafts from pre-Columbian times to the modern day as well as mythological stories. While in her studio, you can check out what she is currently working on and hear about her artistic achievements.

Marcela's studio is attached to her home above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concon, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This area is often skipped by international tourists which means you get to experience a truly local community. To conclude your trip to Concon, Marcela will recommend local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

Stroll Through El Born

Climbing Mount Whitney was one of the most personally satisfying experiences of my 30s; the challenge and the beauty of the hike were high on my list of life experiences.

Exploring Jamaica's coffee heritage at James Dennis's Farm, in a tiny place called Section, Portland in the Blue Mountains. 

Catching the action of a typical day – Beans roasting in a Dutch pot over a crackling wood fire. Farm life soundtracked by birdsong. Sunlight piercing fog. Robust coffee aromas filling the air. Tradition, craft, passion, family, community in motion.

Joshua Tree National Park | United States

Forty-five minutes from Palm Springs – or a slightly longer, two hours from Los Angeles - in California’s southernmost Joshua Tree National Park, I’m waiting at the Visitor Center to buy my park pass, and it’s clear that the most commonly asked question of the rangers in this Park is - “Why is it called a Joshua Tree?"

Turns out the giant, branching yucca’s shape reminded early Mormon settlers of a story in which the Prophet Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky. “A good Joshua Tree will be really thick, with arms sticking out like they’re wearing furry sleeves.” – From The Bulletin, in a 1987 article, 7 years before the trees got themselves their own National Park. 

No two Joshua Trees are alike – for that would be too boring. Instead, they defiantly withstand the desert conditions and stretch out in weird and wonderful ways.
