5. Spectacular sunsets – The lagoon transforms at dusk, with the sky turning shades of pink, orange, and purple, making for breathtaking photography.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and most active flamingo sightings. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun is intense, and respect the marked trails to help preserve the fragile ecosystem.

Meet the Lion. Landlord of the Okavango floodplains. The fearless prides of lions here are known to hunt buffaloes and elephants. They have large prides, with several young cubs. In the delta, as it is elsewhere, it’s all about power and opportunism.

The delta is clearly a fluke of nature, and the way to appreciate it best is from the air, especially in June and July when you can see the progress of the rain water flooding into the area and turning it into a lush paradise teeming with wildlife. 

It’s a very special place.

Lion vs. Buffalo

Florence Cathedral, famously known as the Duomo, stands as a monumental masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. 2 - Climbing The Dome and Bell Tower: For those seeking a challenge, climbing Brunelleschi's dome is a must. The journey involves 463 steps, leading to breathtaking 360° views of Florence. The climb also offers a closer view of The Last Judgement frescoes and a unique perspective of the cathedral's architectural details. Another climbable structure, Giotto's Bell Tower, offers panoramic views of Florence. 
3 - The Baptistery of San Giovanni: Older than the cathedral itself, the Baptistery is renowned for its three sets of bronze doors, including the Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti. Inside, the golden mosaic ceiling captivates visitors, while the tomb of Antipope John XXIII adds historical intrigue.
4 - Santa Reparata: Beneath the cathedral lies Santa Reparata, the original church on this site. Excavations have revealed Roman houses and the former cathedral's remains, offering a journey through layers of history.
5 - Opera del Duomo Museum: This museum houses original Renaissance masterpieces from the Baptistery, Bell Tower, and the cathedral itself. It was here that Michelangelo carved the statue of David, and the museum's terrace offers stunning views of the cathedral.

Phaistos Palace, one of Crete’s most important Minoan archaeological sites, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient civilization without the crowds of Knossos. Perched on a hill overlooking the fertile Messara Plain, the site features well-preserved ruins and sweeping views.

All my life, I called it |trom-sow|, but the locals insist on |troom-sa|. 

The drive through Andøya and Senja was so spectacular that we wanted to abandon our itinerary and stay on the islands overnight vs. driving into Tromsø. And then I would have missed a dramatic sunset/dawn. Everything - sky, sea, windows on buildings, Arctic Church, mountain tops - blazed fiery red for an hour before turning into several shades of blue, with bright pink thrown in for effect. It stayed like that all night long. 

The locals can’t seem to stop partying through Friday night all along Storgata, so the people-watching is riveting. We’ve got to sleep at some point, we kept telling each other.
