Jonathan is a scholar, curator, and researcher specializing in Modern and Contemporary Art. His formal education includes an MA in Art Curation and a PhD in Comparative Art Theory, and he has more than a decade of experience in the field.

He has worked as an independent curator since 2013, collaborated with various museums, and worked at the Getty Research Institute’s Exhibitions department. He is currently the Chief Curator at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires.

Additionally, Jonathan is a licensed tour guide with extensive experience leading private and originally curated experiences. His passion for the arts is matched by an equal passion for gastronomy, history, and culture. In his free time, he enjoys reading and spending time outdoors.

Spain

This full-day tour begins in Bilbao and takes you by private car through the landscapes, towns and cultural memory of Basque Country — from industrial past to prehistoric art, from coastline to forest.

You start at the Bizkaia Bridge in Getxo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and symbol of the region’s industrial legacy. From there, continue inland to Guernica, the town made famous by Picasso's legendary anti-war painting - find out how the area was impacted by the Civil War.

Next, the road turns coastal. You'll visit fishing villages and dramatic viewpoints along the Bay of Biscay — beaches beloved by surfers and headlands featured in Game of Thrones. A seasonal Basque lunch highlights local flavors.

At each stop, history reveals itself through physical traces — a cave wall, a war-damaged town square, a transporter bridge still in use. Your first stop will be to the Puente Bizkaia, one of the area's most iconic industrial monuments. This is a great starting point for understanding the Basuqe Country's industrial history and character. From the top, you'll also get stunning views of the river and surrounding valley. In the town of Getxo (which the bridge takes you to) you will see examples of 19th mansions, built by the wealth accumulated by the area's industrial magnates.

Next, you'll be driven to Guernica, the subject of Picasso's anti-war and anti-fascist painting which hangs in Madrid's Reina Sofia. Here, you'll be taken on a walking tour through the town and into the assembly house. This provides the perfect excuse to find out more about Basque culture, history, and language.

Bilbao History 101

The Bay of Biscay is famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches, and food. At Mundaka you'll stop off for a panaromic view, which changes dramatically between low tide and high tide. You'll then be taken to the historic town of Bermeo for a walking tour.

Heading inland you'll find two examples of Basque artistry. Santimamiñe is a cave that contains Paleolithic paintings and engravings dating back 14,000. These depictions of bison, horses, and deer give us a glimpse into a prehistoric world. This cave is only accessible April-October. Meanwhile, nearby, in the Bosque de Oma you'll find pine tress painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola in the 1980s.  The geometric shapes, eyes, animals, and colorful forms you'll find here change depending on where you're standing, playing with your perspective in the forest.

This journey captures the essence of the Basque Coast in a way that blends scenery, culture, and cuisine. Mundaka is legendary for being home to one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world, making it a pilgrimage site for wave-riders. Yet the experience doesn’t stop at natural beauty—the town of Bermeo adds a vibrant cultural layer.

The cave and forest add another dimension completely. Here, you'll see art 14,000 years old, as well as paintings on living tress. These are two dramatically different examples of art and culture interacting with nature, and provide an opportunity to witness the full length and breadth of Basque culture.

Maritime and Inland Cultures

Before being taken back to Bilbao, you'll go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge, home to a 10th century hermitage. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was made famous thanks to its use as a location for the Season 8 of Games of Thrones.

This region is legendary for its cuisine. M'Angel will take you to a hand-picked spot, either inland or by the coast, depending on the season, where you'll enjoy beautiful wines and regions dishes of the highest quality. 

You'll get to enjoy some choice regional wines and pintxos at a txakoli winery. Txakoli wine tends to be white and is known for its citrusy and herby palate.

This experience blends cinematic landscapes with the region’s distinctive wine culture. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most breathtaking sights in northern Spain—a craggy island crowned with a hermitage that has stood for over a thousand years. Walking its stone bridge and climbing the winding steps feels like stepping into legend, an impression magnified by its role as a Game of Thrones filming location. 

From there, the transition to a txakoli winery highlights another Basque treasure. Unlike any other Spanish wine, txakoli is crisp, lightly sparkling, and uniquely tied to the coastal terroir. This is a 4.5-hour walking tour that showcases Milan's enduring artistic heritage. The tour begins with a visit to the stunningly preserved and often overlooked Ca' Granda, originally a major hospital and now home to Milan’s University. Commissioned by Duke Francesco Sforza in 1456 and designed by architect Filarete, its avant-garde design became a model for European hospitals. Despite wartime damages, its fifteenth-century courtyards and rebuilt eighteenth-century facade remain breathtaking. The tour includes the library and the icehouse. Omar Chennafi, a renowned photographer and cultural expert, is your guide for this immersive experience into the heart of Fes. As a part-Berber himself, he believes in the diversity of the Moroccan identity in forming the uniqueness of current-day Morocco. His deep knowledge of culture and modern history makes him the perfect guide to explore the Berber heritage.

The experience begins Luca’s family home in the heart of Mamoiada. After a brief introduction in this 19th-century house, you’ll head to the vineyard just outside the village—a landscape shaped by vines, granite, and centuries of tradition.

There, among Cannonau rows and sweeping hills, stands a nuraghe: a prehistoric stone tower built by Sardinia’s ancient people, still intact after thousands of years. Beside it is a small farmhouse and a wooden patio overlooking the vines—your table for a guided tasting of three wines, including Luca’s rare Cannonau Bianco, made from an ancient cross between Cannonau and Gallòpu.

This white grape, known as Gallòpu, is now produced only by Luca in all of Barbagia. The tasting is followed by a traditional lunch: local appetizers, handmade ravioli with ragù, and slow-cooked sheep stew—a moment of pure Sardinian depth.

Luca is the only winemaker in Barbagia producing Gallòpu, an ancient white grape once nearly lost. His Cannonau Bianco is not just rare—it’s a symbol of his vision: to innovate without erasing the past, to make wines that speak both of place and of intention.

Alongside him is his father, who still tends the vines with the same hands that shaped them decades ago. Their work isn’t rushed; it follows the rhythm of the soil, the altitude, the granite. The vineyard and the house have a quiet presence and a timeless feel—places that hold memory without needing to speak it. And when you look up from your glass, the view over Mamoiada’s vineyards says more than words can.

He represents the third generation of a lineage rooted in this land, where viticulture is passed down like a story. After years of working in communication, Luca chose to return to his origins and dedicate himself fully to wine, blending modern sensibility with deep respect for ancestral knowledge.

He produces his wines from native Sardinian varieties grown in high-altitude vineyards between 500 and 850 meters above sea level. His work is guided by the belief that each bottle can carry the memory of the people, places, and traditions that shaped it. Hosting guests in his family’s 19th-century home and his vineyards, he shares not only wine, but a living connection to Mamoiada’s soul.

She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. With its interactive exhibits, family-friendly atmosphere, and focus on environmental sustainability, it’s a great stop for nature lovers and curious minds alike.


1. Diverse freshwater species, including native Iberian fish like sturgeon, barbel, and lamprey, as well as exotic species from the Amazon and African rivers.

Whether through the naked eye, binoculars, or professional telescopes, the pristine night skies over Alqueva create an awe-inspiring experience for astronomy lovers and astrophotographers.

Chania’s Old Venetian Harbor

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the scenic Arvanitia Promenade, a stunning coastal walkway that stretches for about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) along the base of Akronafplia Castle. This leisurely path connects Nafplio’s Old Town with Arvanitia Beach, offering breathtaking views of the Argolic Gulf and the surrounding cliffs. Lined with palm trees, fragrant flowers, and dramatic sea views, the promenade is a favorite for both locals and visitors looking for a relaxing walk, a scenic jog, or the perfect photo opportunity.

1. The panoramic sea views along the entire route provide perfect backdrops for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset.

2. The towering Akronafplia cliffs rise dramatically on one side, offering shade and a striking contrast to the open sea on the other.

3. The promenade leads directly to Arvanitia Beach, a small, pebbled spot perfect for a refreshing swim or sunbathing.

4. Benches placed along the route offer peaceful spots for relaxation, with views of Bourtzi Fortress floating in the harbor in the distance.

5. The pathway is lined with local flora, including oleanders and citrus trees, adding vibrant colors and a fragrant touch to your walk.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the best lighting for photography. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as parts of the path are uneven, and bring water if you plan to continue to the beach.

Arvanitia Promenade

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Jamaica

1942: Errol Flynn popularised rafting down the river Rio Grande in Jamaica on bamboo rafts, made of long logs bound together. Fast forward: I'm on a raft for a 3-hour ride and sensory overload: ferns, birds, rapids, butterflies, serenading raft captain. But here’s my favorite part —

After an hour on the river, we dock at Belinda’s Riverside Restaurant, a rustic gem nestled by the Rio Grande. How does this place even exist in the middle of nowhere? Turns out Belinda and team hike a couple of hours across the hills, ingredients in tow, to set up shop each time, serving up Jamaican-style curry goat and fish (take your pick: fried, steamed, or escoveitched). Prepared with love and served alongside rice or bammy. One of my best meals in Jamaica. Call ahead to make sure Belinda’s is open on the day you visit.

Photography-Forward Itinerary for Ljubljana, Slovenia (4-6 Hours in the Afternoon)

Wander Through the Old Town (1:00 PM - 2:30 PM). Begin your afternoon with a stroll through Ljubljana's Old Town, focusing on Mestni trg (Town Square) and Stari trg (Old Square). Capture the vibrant street life, historic buildings, and charming shops. Look for interesting angles and compositions that showcase the blend of architectural styles.

Prešeren Square and Franciscan Church (2:45 PM - 3:30 PM). Visit Prešeren Square, the lively heart of Ljubljana, named after the famous Slovenian poet France Prešeren. Capture the beautiful architecture, the statue of Prešeren, and the iconic salmon-pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. The square and church offer excellent photo opportunities with their vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture.

Ljubljana Castle (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). Take the funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle for sunset. Capture panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. The castle offers sweeping landscapes and intricate architectural details. The walk from the castle to Metelkova Mesto, including the cable car ride, can take around 20-30 minutes considering all waits and walking distances.

Metelkova Mesto (6:15 PM - 7:00 PM). End your day at Metelkova Mesto, an autonomous cultural center known for its vibrant street art and alternative scene. Capture the colorful murals and the lively atmosphere, and include the unique architecture and artistic details of the area.
