This two-hour wine tasting and tapas pairing in Buenos Aires provides an opportunity to sample the best of Argentina’s diverse wine regions — without setting foot outside of the capital! The experience plays out as a guided tasting of five wines selected by your sommelier host, Bertie. These are chosen for their variety; naturally there will be a chance to sample one of Mendoza's world-famous Malbecs, but you will also taste crisp white wines from northern Argentina's high-altitude vineyards. Each wine is paired with a homemade local tapa crafted by Aby, an Argentine chef, designed to enhance the flavors of the wine.

Bertie, an English Sommelier, and Aby, an Argentine chef, are a Buenos Aires-based couple dedicated to sharing food, wine, and excellent company. Aby has been cooking traditional Argentine food since she was a child — helping at family gatherings — and Bertie has worked as a professional sommelier since 2008. 

The couple met by chance in Rio de Janeiro in 2014. What began as conversations about flavors and cultures soon grew into a partnership rooted in curiosity and hospitality. Since 2016, they’ve been running wine discovery and cooking classes together, creating meaningful experiences that celebrate regional traditions, local producers, and the joy of exploring Argentina one glass at a time. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

A visit to Fogo Island is all about the power of culture, art and community as catalysts for social and economic change. It’s a story of the indomitable spirit of people who refuse to give up their land.

First Impressions?  Minimalist winter scenery, it’s 🧊 season, one of Fogo Island’s seven  seasons. There are wooden Saltbox Houses, that must have leaped out of a child’s painting book. Reminders of fishing are everywhere. 

My favorite part of the trip is spending time with the islanders who do community orientations and cabin outings for visitors. These are people who are proud of their Irish or English heritage (seven or eight generations in Fogo Island notwithstanding) — who sing songs and tell stories of their ancestors, invite strangers into their homes to share salted cod and tea, take you on ski-doo for ice-fishing, teach you to forage for berries and show you how to preserve vegetables in mason jars to last through winter.

Far Away From Far Away

Essaouira, Morocco, is renowned for its bohemian spirit and vibrant art scene, making it a magnet for creatives, free spirits, and art lovers. Since the 1960s, when icons like Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens frequented the city, Essaouira has blossomed into a hub for hippie culture and contemporary Moroccan art. Today, its winding medina streets are dotted with eclectic galleries, artisan workshops, and laid-back cafés, all infused with a relaxed, seaside vibe.


1. Galerie d’Art Frederic Damgaard, the city’s oldest gallery, showcases contemporary Moroccan art, including paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works by local artists.

2. The Le Real Mogador gallery features abstract and surrealist works that reflect Essaouira’s unique blend of African, Berber, and European influences.

3. Artisan shops in the medina offer handcrafted jewelry, colorful textiles, and wooden carvings, perfect for finding unique, locally made souvenirs.

4. Street murals and vibrant graffiti in hidden corners of the medina reflect the city’s bohemian vibe and make for fantastic photo opportunities.

5. Laid-back cafés and rooftop lounges often host live music events, jam sessions, and poetry readings—perfect for soaking up Essaouira’s creative atmosphere.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the late afternoon when the light softens, casting a golden glow on the whitewashed walls. After gallery hopping, relax at a rooftop café with mint tea and enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Art Galleries of Essaouira

Towering over the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius is one of the world’s most famous volcanoes, best known for its catastrophic eruption in 79 AD that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. Today, hiking to the crater offers a thrilling opportunity to stand on the edge of an active volcano, with breathtaking panoramic views of Naples, the coastline, and the volcanic landscape. Whether you're fascinated by geology or simply seeking an unforgettable hike, Vesuvius is a must-visit.

1. A well-marked trail to the summit winds through volcanic terrain, offering stunning views of Naples and the Bay of Naples as you ascend. The hike is moderately challenging but accessible to most visitors.

2. A crater viewpoint at the top provides a close-up look at the steaming vents and rugged edges of the volcano, a powerful reminder of its explosive history.

3. A 360-degree panorama from the rim stretches across the islands of Capri and Ischia, the Bay of Naples, and the surrounding countryside, making the climb well worth the effort.

4. A visitor kiosk near the summit offers geological insights into Vesuvius’ past eruptions, helping visitors understand the power of this still-active volcano.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Wearing sturdy shoes is essential, as the trail is rocky and dusty. Bringing water, sunscreen, and a light jacket is recommended, as it can be windy and cooler at the summit. Arriving early in the morning helps avoid the midday heat and peak crowds.

Mount Vesuvius Crater Hike

On a cool morning drive in Ngorongoro Crater, we meet a pride of eleven hungry lions —  lean and menacing. We stay with them for five hours through several hunting attempts .

One of the lionesses spots a herd of zebras. She masterfully rounds them up and sends them in the direction of her waiting pride. At the last minute though, the zebras, finding new energy or a brilliant leader, take a united front and flee. The zebras will live another day. 

Well, hello there! - say the lions to a group of wild buffaloes .. and quickly dissolve into the grass. The buffaloes can smell the lions. They start backing up and eventually escape. 

Next, the younger lions eye an ostrich In the distance. But it fluffs up its feathers with a disdainful air, and runs away.

Mobile food is awfully hard to get your paws on. The lions decide to lie in the grass and wait it out. Someone will come by. It’s just a matter of time.

A Matter of Life

3. Silves is renowned for its traditional Algarvean sweets, especially treats made from almonds, figs, and carob. Pastry shops throughout the city offer a taste of classics like “Dom Rodrigo,” a delicate almond-and-egg-yolk dessert, and “Morgado,” an almond cake often filled with sweet egg cream.

4. The city’s Arade River waterfront is lined with picturesque cafes and offers a peaceful place to relax. Once a vital trading route, the river now provides a scenic backdrop as you stroll through Silves’ cobbled streets.

5. Annual events like the Silves Medieval Fair, held each summer, transform the city with reenactments, traditional markets, and street performances. It’s an immersive experience that brings Silves’ storied past to life in a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere.

Catalonia, Spain, is home to the iconic Montserrat Monastery, a spiritual and cultural landmark nestled among the jagged peaks of the Montserrat mountain range. Founded in the 11th century, this Benedictine monastery is renowned for its stunning natural setting, religious significance, and the revered statue of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta), Catalonia’s patron saint. Offering breathtaking views, scenic hiking trails, and rich musical traditions, Montserrat is both a pilgrimage site and a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Montserrat Monastery

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.

Cycling through Buenos Aires

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Plaza de la Virgen, one of the city’s most picturesque and historic squares. Nestled in the heart of the old town, this elegant plaza is surrounded by some of Valencia’s most important landmarks, including the Cathedral of Valencia, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken, and the Palace of the Generalitat. With its ornate fountains, lively cafés, and centuries of history, Plaza de la Virgen is a must-visit for those looking to soak in the city’s cultural and architectural beauty.

1. The Cathedral of Valencia, which houses the legendary Holy Grail, dominates the square with its mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque architectural styles.

2. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken, dedicated to Valencia’s patron saint, features a stunning dome and is a site of deep religious devotion.

3. The Turia Fountain, an eye-catching bronze sculpture representing the Turia River, is the centerpiece of the plaza and a popular photo spot.

4. The Palace of the Generalitat, a striking Gothic-Renaissance building, serves as the seat of Valencia’s government and adds a political and historical dimension to the square.

5. The plaza’s lively atmosphere, with street musicians, local gatherings, and charming cafés, makes it an ideal place to relax and people-watch.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the evening when the buildings are beautifully illuminated, or on a Thursday at noon to witness the Water Tribunal of Valencia, a UNESCO-recognized tradition that has taken place here for over 1,000 years.
