This is a scenic day hike across the Kik Plateau, perched at approximately 1,800 meters in the High Atlas Mountains. The trek offers sweeping views over terraced farmland, Lake Takerkoust, and distant peaks, including Mount Toubkal. 

Starting from Asni, the route winds through traditional Berber villages built from earth and stone, where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Along the way, you’ll stop for tea with a local family and enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the plateau, surrounded by olive groves and open sky.

This hike is ideal for those who’ve already seen the classic Atlas mountain routes and want to explore the landscape further while engaging with the local communities. 

The walk takes 5-6 hours with stops and is best done in spring or autumn, when the plateau is green and the light is sharp. Though not technically difficult, there are some steady inclines and exposed terrain, so good walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

The Kik Plateau offers an expansive, open landscape that contrasts with the steeper, more rugged trails of the central High Atlas. Its distinctive limestone outcroppings and gently undulating terrain give you a different kind of hiking experience—one defined by wide horizons and silence. From the plateau, you can take in panoramic views that stretch across the Haouz plains, Lake Takerkoust and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas.

Argentina

Taste something a little different on this wine and tasting at one of the oldest wineries in Mendoza. While most pairings come with cheese and charcuterie, this estate in the Maipú Wine Region serves their wine with locally-made chocolates and alfajores. But before then, you’ll explore the grounds of this family-run winery on a slow, mindful walk. While exploring organic vineyards and old cellar doors, you’ll learn about simple traditions kept alive by this family of winemakers for generations. Begin in Fushimi, Kyoto’s legendary brewing district, where soft underground water gives local sake its elegant, gentler profile known as onna-zake. The district is also shaped by canal-side streets and longstanding breweries that have defined sake-making here for centuries.

Going beyond a pub crawl, Kyoto-based cultural curator Eric takes you on a deeper look at a tradition that has sustained some of Japan’s oldest sake companies. You begin at Gekkeikan, exploring the museum to understand the science, tools, and history of nihonshu, another name for sake. From there, the scale shifts as you visit a boutique brewery to discover the intimate, labor-intensive processes of Fushimi’s smaller producers.

Between tastings of different flavor profiles, you walk the atmospheric streets of the district before settling into a historic building for a meal of yakitori and teppanyaki. Over the meal, Eric weaves together the stories of Fushimi, its breweries, and their place in Kyoto culture.

Italy

This experience invites you to read Herculaneum as a city caught mid-life by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius. You follow basalt streets, pause at corner fountains, and look into shops where stone counters still hold recessed jars. Wood endured here as charcoal—doors, beams, even furniture outlines—so kitchens, stairways, and upper floors remain readable. Worn thresholds and bakeries with mills and ovens make daily habits visible, while pyroclastic surges and mud sealed what they touched.

You'll trace the ancient shoreline, now inland, including the vaulted boat sheds (known as the fornici), the site’s starkest memory, the place where people sought refuge in a last desperate attempt to escape. Nearby, the Baths show pools, mosaics, changing rooms, and underfloor heating. You'll also discover the House of Neptune and Amphitrite with its mosaic, the College of the Augustales with painted panels, and the House of the Wooden Partition with its sliding screen.

Michele’s storytelling is what sets this experience apart, as he builds a living scene from traces that still speak—soot on ceilings, worn thresholds, a partition in charcoal. This creative photography experience in Buenos Aires is designed for newbie photography enthusiasts, those with existing knowledge about composition, and advanced photographers seeking ways to improve their cityscape and landscape photography. Hosted in his intimate restaurant, Chef Toshihiko Yamamoto will explain the history and importance of dashi in Japanese cooking while together, you prepare a fresh batch of dashi to use for an exquisite meal. You will shave the dried bonito into flakes and boil it with kombu kelp into a broth rich with umami flavor.

Next, Chef Yamamoto will prepare a special meal with a little help from you, creating Western-Japanese fusion dishes to show how easily dashi can be used as an ingredient to your own style of cuisine. As he prepares the meal, feel free to ask questions or take photos and video of the process. After the meal, the chef will prepare a bowl of matcha in the style of Omotesenke tea cermony, the perfect way to wrap up this unique experience.

With nearly a decade's experience working for a dashi company and years as a chef specializing in Italian cuisine, Chef Yamamoto brings a new perspective to the use of Japanese dashi in cuisine from other parts of the world. Rather than focusing solely on traditional Japanese dishes, he will show you how dashi can be used to creatively season other dishes, from wagyu beef to fried cheese.

This interactive experience allows you to participate in the dashi making process while getting a close-up view of a Japanese chef preparing a special private meal in his own restaurant. You'll also help with making some other simple dishes. While Chef Yamamoto speaks limited English, his friendly demeanor and passion for sharing the virtues of dashi with the world will make your time with him a pleasurable memory of Kyoto. Chef Yamamoto will also share his other interest, Japanese tea ceremony, wrapping up your time with a casual tea experience based on his practice of Omotesenke style tea ceremony.

Chef Yamamoto is also a long-time practitioner of the Omotesenke school of Japanese tea ceremony, an interest that influences his cooking and design aesthetic.

Today, it remains a semi-private residence, partly inhabited by the 18th Duchess of Medinaceli and her family. Here are the Top things to check out:

The neighborhoods of Psiri and Metaxourgeio in Athens are vibrant open-air galleries where street art tells stories of culture, politics, and creativity. Known for their edgy, artistic vibes, these districts showcase works from renowned international artists and talented locals alike. With colorful murals, thought-provoking graffiti, and playful stencils, these streets invite visitors to explore Athens’ contemporary artistic heartbeat beyond its ancient ruins. 
1. Psiri boasts a mix of large-scale murals and quirky graffiti that reflect the neighborhood’s lively, bohemian spirit. Themes range from political messages to playful and surreal imagery.
2. In Metaxourgeio, street art leans more towards thought-provoking and experimental works, often addressing social issues and urban life. The blend of crumbling buildings and striking art adds to its gritty charm. 
3. Renowned artists like WD (Wild Drawing), Sonke, and INO have left their mark here, making the area a magnet for street art enthusiasts. 
4. Art coexists with trendy cafes, bars, and galleries, creating an atmosphere where creativity and social life merge seamlessly. 
5. Many works are dynamic and ever-changing, as new pieces replace older ones, ensuring that every visit offers fresh surprises. 
Visitor Tip: Allocate 1.5 to 3 hours to wander through the streets, ideally in the morning or late afternoon for better lighting and fewer crowds. Wear comfortable shoes and keep a camera ready for unexpected gems around every corner.

Street Art in Psiri

Chile’s Laguna Chaxa, part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is one of the best places in the Atacama Desert to see flamingos in their natural habitat. Located within the vast Salar de Atacama, this shallow, mineral-rich lagoon attracts three species of flamingos—Chilean, Andean, and James’s flamingos—along with other unique birdlife. The salt-crusted landscape, mirror-like waters, and distant Andes Mountains create a truly surreal and unforgettable experience, especially at sunrise or sunset.


1. Flamingo spotting – Watch hundreds of flamingos wading gracefully through the shallow waters, feeding on microscopic algae and crustaceans.

2. Breathtaking reflections – The lagoon’s still waters create stunning mirror-like reflections of the flamingos, the deep blue sky, and the snow-capped Andes.

3. Salt-crusted terrain – Walk along designated paths through the unique, rugged landscape of the Atacama salt flats, which stretch as far as the eye can see.

4. Other bird species – Look out for Andean avocets, puna plovers, and other rare high-altitude birds that thrive in this extreme environment.

5. Spectacular sunsets – The lagoon transforms at dusk, with the sky turning shades of pink, orange, and purple, making for breathtaking photography.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and most active flamingo sightings. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun is intense, and respect the marked trails to help preserve the fragile ecosystem.

Flamingo Reserve

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

Riad Living

Patagonia – the land where the earth ends – must be one of the most unique places to visit in this world. I definitely felt this way, when I visited the glaciers, mountains, and rivers around. It’s a stunning place, and even though it’s quite hard to get there, the whole trip is completely worthwhile.

Patagonian hares, hawks, red foxes, geese, black-necked swans, flamingos, woodpeckers, skunks, pumas, condors, and the near extinct huemul deer – this place is for nature lovers. We’ve spent 1 month in Patagonia, exploring the fauna and flora, zipping warm chocolate next to the chimney of our bed and breakfast, and breathing the fresh air.

Save packing lightly for another trip – visiting the snowy landscape in Southern Argentina, you want to come as prepared as possible. Scarves, gloves, a winter jacket, boots, and lots of exchange clothes are a must.

Visit a rare phenomenon

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!
