This 4-hour walking tour in Buenos Aires focuses on three of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods: Recoleta, Retiro, and San Telmo. Emerging at the end of the 18th century, it was a movement that embraced not only architecture but all the arts, from poetry to song, literature and crafts. This walking tour in Barcelona’s Eixample district lets you in on the secrets of Modernisme, and the cultural renaissance that set out to make Barcelona the most ‘modern’ city in Europe. Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

Monasterio de la Cartuja

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the unique Komboloi Museum, a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the history and artistry of the komboloi—Greek worry beads. Founded in 1998 by collectors Evangelinos and Rallou E. Kori, the museum showcases an impressive collection of over 1,000 komboloi made from materials like amber, coral, ivory, and glass, some dating back to the 18th century. Beyond their use as a stress-relief tool, komboloi beads carry deep cultural and spiritual significance in Greek society, making this museum a must-visit for those interested in traditional Greek heritage.

1. The museum displays a diverse collection of komboloi from different cultures, including Greek, Middle Eastern, and Asian examples, illustrating their global significance.

2. Exhibits explore the craftsmanship and materials used in creating komboloi, with rare beads made from amber, silver, and semi-precious stones.

3. A section of the museum delves into the history and symbolism of worry beads, offering insight into their role in Greek social and spiritual life.

Komboloi Museum

Namibia

I am in Kaokoland. Final frontier of Namibia. Home to the beautiful Himba people.

The last nomadic, herding tribe in southern Africa, they still maintain their dress and traditions. Red ochre paste for sun protection. Smoke from herbs for cleansing and perfume. Intricate hairstyles. Lots of leather jewelry. A beauty routine that takes three hours every single day to complete.

This young woman graciously agrees to be my ‘model’ - and is as curious about me and my traditions as I am about hers.

Land of Himba

The Zelve Open-Air Museum showcases a lesser-crowded but equally fascinating side of Cappadocia’s history. Once home to a thriving community, it now offers a glimpse into the region’s unique cave dwellings and religious heritage.
1. Cave Dwellings: Wander through ancient cave homes and monasteries that served as living quarters for centuries. The structures are a testament to human ingenuity in adapting to the rocky terrain.
2. Historical Churches: Explore rock-carved churches that still bear traces of frescoes and inscriptions, offering insight into the region’s spiritual past.
3. Quiet Exploration: Enjoy a less-crowded experience compared to other Cappadocian landmarks, making it easier to appreciate the historical and natural beauty.

Visitor Tip: Wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be uneven. Allocate at least two hours to fully explore the site and appreciate its history.

Zelve Open-Air Museum

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

Walking Tour: Sagrada Familia

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park, a hidden gem nestled within a lush pine forest just 20 km (12 miles) from the city center. This enchanting natural retreat features a cascading waterfall, turquoise pools, and scenic walking trails, making it a perfect escape for nature lovers and photographers. With its tranquil atmosphere, rich wildlife, and shaded picnic areas, Kurşunlu Waterfall is an ideal spot for a relaxing break from Antalya’s bustling coastline.

1. The main waterfall, cascading from 18 meters (59 feet) into an emerald-green lagoon, creates a stunning photo opportunity and a peaceful ambiance.

2. Scenic walking trails wind through the park, leading visitors past smaller waterfalls, wooden bridges, and hidden caves.

3. The park is home to rich wildlife, including turtles, fish, and various bird species, making it a great spot for birdwatching and nature photography.

4. Shaded picnic areas allow visitors to enjoy a relaxing meal surrounded by nature, with the sound of flowing water in the background.

5. Cool, refreshing air provides a welcome escape from Antalya’s summer heat, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning to enjoy the falls without crowds. Wear comfortable shoes, as some paths can be slippery, and bring insect repellent if visiting in the warmer months.

Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park

If you are interested in rare natural phenomena and want to learn more about marine life, you should head to Mexico's Pacific coast. One of the best spectacles is the annual whale migration, where you can catch unique glimpses of humpback whales. 

The largest mammals on earth have earned their reputation as the most beautiful, intelligent, and impressive creatures. If you watch the ocean at migration time (either from the shore or on a boat tour), you'll see baby whales leaping and maybe even hear mother whales calling their families together. The baby-whale season is from January until the end of April.

But the Pacific coast is not only known for whales. It's just as beautiful to watch sea turtles hatch. If you come at the right time, you can witness mother turtles laying hundreds of eggs overnight in the soft sand on the coast, and much later, those hundreds of babies hatch and crawl toward the sea. Come between late August to early October.
