Master calligrapher Eri Koyama takes you on a journey toward peace and contentment with a simple brush and ink. This private experience begins in a peaceful Kyoto temple where she explains the cultural significance of shodo, Japanese calligraphy, and how it has been used as both a form of art and meditation over the centuries. Rooted in Zen philosophy, shodo invites stillness, focus, and a deep connection between mind and body.

Next, Eri explains the tools used in Japanese calligraphy, and you'll learn to make your own ink from an inkstone. After introducing the different writing styles, she’ll guide you in practicing the foundational strokes used in each.

Daniel Flores is a Mexican artist and the director of the Producción Gráfica Zanate printmaking workshop. He specializes in graphic arts and printmaking and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Mexico and internationally. He has also received several grants for projects focused on graphic and plastic arts production within various communities across the state of Oaxaca. Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

He founded Gráfica Zanate in 2007, and the studio continues to produce annual printmaking portfolios in collaboration with artists from Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico City, and abroad.

Alongside Daniel, the "maestro" of Gráfica Zanate, you’ll meet the studio’s team of experienced local artists: Viridiana Carmona, Marco Patiño, and Marco Antonio Santos.

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate, a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch that serves as the grand entrance to the city’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town). Built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this three-arched marble gateway is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Turkey. With its intricate carvings, towering Corinthian columns, and ancient road beneath, Hadrian’s Gate is a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.

Aldeia José Franco, located in the village of Sobreiro between Lisbon and Mafra, is an enchanting open-air museum that brings Portuguese rural life and traditions vividly to life. Created by potter José Franco in the 1940s, this miniaturized village features authentic replicas of old Portuguese homes, mills, workshops, and shops that reflect the customs and everyday lives of the Portuguese countryside.

Bologna’s Gourmet Food Shops

Trieste, Italy, is home to the Risiera di San Sabba, a former rice mill turned Nazi concentration camp during World War II. As the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy, it serves as a chilling yet essential reminder of one of history’s darkest periods. Today, the site operates as a museum and memorial, honoring the thousands of political prisoners, partisans, and Jewish victims who were imprisoned, tortured, and deported from this location. Walking through the stark, somber complex offers a powerful and deeply moving experience.


1. At the entrance, a vast, empty courtyard evokes a haunting sense of history, where prisoners once stood before being interrogated or deported to Auschwitz and other camps. The atmosphere is solemn and reflective.

2. Inside the museum, exhibits display personal belongings, historical documents, and testimonies from survivors and victims, providing an in-depth look at the horrors that took place here.

3. In the remains of the former crematorium, visitors can see the chilling site where bodies were burned after executions. The original structure was destroyed by retreating Nazis in an attempt to hide evidence of their crimes.

4. Along the walls, prison cells used for interrogation and solitary confinement remain preserved, offering a stark reminder of the suffering endured by those who were held here.

Risiera di San Sabba

Spend the afternoon exploring two of Dubrovnik's historic and photo-worthy sites: the Franciscan Monastery and the Dominican Monastery.

Start with the Franciscan Monastery, located near the Pile Gate. This serene spot offers a quiet retreat from the city's bustle. The monastery's peaceful cloister, featuring Romanesque-Gothic architecture and a beautiful central garden, is a highlight for photographers. Don't miss the Old Pharmacy, one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. You can comfortably explore the Franciscan Monastery in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Next, head to the Dominican Monastery, situated near the Ploče Gate. This monastery, with its impressive Gothic-Renaissance style, houses a stunning collection of art and artifacts. The cloister, adorned with arches and lush greenery, provides a perfect setting for reflection and photography. The monastery's museum showcases works by local artists, offering insight into Dubrovnik's rich cultural heritage. Plan to spend another 45 minutes to an hour here.

Both sites can be seen in around two hours, providing a peaceful and enriching experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the history and beauty of Dubrovnik.

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the sprawling Chapultepec Park (Bosque de Chapultepec), one of the largest urban parks in the world and a green oasis in the heart of the city. At its heart stands the magnificent Chapultepec Castle, perched atop Chapultepec Hill and offering panoramic views of the city’s skyline. The park is rich with history, museums, monuments, and tranquil lakes, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and photographers alike.

1. Chapultepec Castle is the only royal castle in the Americas, featuring opulent rooms, sweeping balconies, and murals by famous Mexican artists like Juan O’Gorman.

2. The National Museum of History inside the castle showcases artifacts from Mexico’s imperial era, the Mexican Revolution, and the country’s colonial past.

3. Stroll through the park’s peaceful trails, visit artificial lakes for paddle boating, or relax with a picnic under the shade of ancient trees.

Chapultepec Castle

Phaistos Palace, one of Crete’s most important Minoan archaeological sites, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient civilization without the crowds of Knossos. Perched on a hill overlooking the fertile Messara Plain, the site features well-preserved ruins and sweeping views.
1. The palace offers an authentic experience of Minoan architecture and culture.
2. Visitors can explore ruins of storage rooms, ceremonial areas, and royal quarters.
3. Its hilltop location provides panoramic views of the surrounding plain and mountains.

Phaistos Palace

Faroe Islands

I’m seduced by the untouched beauty and drama of the Faroe Islands. Driving into Tórshavn, I witness a rare Faroese sight.

The ocean is bright red. The beach is packed with onlookers. It’s a grindadráp, a pilot whale hunt. Heavily regulated, it’s being carried out with process perfected over millennia. A local couple points out their son to me, he is on one of the boats — “unless we send a boat, we won’t get our share of the whale meat.”

When a school of pilot whales is sighted, boats gather around and slowly drive them towards the chosen bay or beach, for it’s illegal to kill the whales in the open sea. This time, there are about two hundred of them. Every bit of them will be consumed or used — and none can be sold.

I’m shocked, outraged, fascinated, caught up in the excitement and terribly conflicted. As a traveler, I respect — and seek to understand — culture and tradition. And the Faroese are holding on to this one — as it symbolizes for them their relationship with the sea.
