Chile

This adventurous hike is a 5km (3 mile) circuit (moderate difficulty) in the canyons of Atacama Desert's Salt Mountain Range (Cordillera de la Sal). A 50-minute drive delivers you amid this wilderness area beyond highly-trafficked Moon Valley. While the scenery is comparable with those Martian landscapes, this trek sits off the radar and cultivates a deeper connection with this remote region in northern Chile. Guided by Valeria, a naturalist and conservationist, you'll be urged to absorb the stunning nature and geology—and study 1000-year-old petroglyphs.
 
Bear in mind this excursion is suitable only for those with a decent level of fitness and physical mobility. The route involves one steep descent with loose terrain, a few river crossings, and wading through the cold-water river in the slot canyon. Hiking poles are provided and you'll need to rely on your hands for rocky obstacles. Typically taking 3.5 hours to complete the loop, Valeria will pace the trek to suit your capabilities.

Hiking in the world's driest non-polar desert at a 2,500 m.a.s.l. is no walk in the park! It is, however, the quest of a lifetime—and it's made all the better when you have a local naturalist handling the route, keeping you safe, and sharing intricate information about the ecosystem and its communities. Along the course of this moderate hike, Valeria will pause to educate you on the slot canyon and share insight on the region's wildlife—you may even encounter native and migratory birds.

After taking in the Andes and the dunes of the Salt Mountain Range from afar, you'll descend into the canyon and let the Rio Grande guide the way. This eventually turns into a stunning slot canyon which you'll pass by wading through the river (depth ranges from ankle to hips level)—it's the perfect antidote to those scorching summer temperatures. After meeting the salty confluence of the Rio Grande and Rio Salado, you'll gaze upon petroglyphs carved by Indigenous people around 1000 years ago.

As the sun begins to set, step aboard a boat for a sunset cruise along the shoreline. The city glows behind you as the boat glides past islands and cliffs, closing the day on the water.

DAY 3 – MONASTIC AND BAROQUE HERITAGE | Start your day at the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries, two of Dubrovnik’s most historic sanctuaries. These calm, beautiful places are filled with carved cloisters, quiet chapels, and traces of centuries past. For lunch, walk to Konoba Kopun, a small square near the Jesuit steps where traditional Dalmatian recipes are served with care. In the afternoon, explore Dubrovnik Cathedral, a baroque landmark filled with light, then visit the Rector’s Palace, once the seat of power in the Republic of Ragusa. As your final experience, leave the city behind and visit Trsteno, a coastal village known for its historic gardens. A guided walk and picnic offer a quiet, green farewell to your time in Dubrovnik.

WHERE TO STAY IN DUBROVNIK | If you want to be in the heart of it all, stay inside the Old Town. It’s full of charm but also crowds and stairs. The Valencia Cathedral is very beautiful place to visit.
It was consecrated in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia after the Reconquista, Pere d'Albalat.

A Black River Safari took us into the heart of the largest freshwater wetland ecosystem in Jamaica, the Great Morass at the Black River. This area, spanning 125 square miles, is a haven for biodiversity, featuring giant mangrove trees and an array of swamp animals, including the endangered American crocodile, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in Jamaica. 

The guides spotted crocodiles of various sizes in the water and along the riverbanks, including baby crocodiles. Also several bird species call this area home. As we glided along the river, we saw snowy egrets, great egrets, and great blue herons, among other bird species.

The River teems with mangrove trees, ferns, and water lilies. The mangroves are particularly noteworthy, with some species having roots extending 40 feet downward. A curious aspect of the Black River is its dark color, which becomes more noticeable as you move upstream. This is due to the peat soil at the bottom of the river, which, despite giving the river its dark appearance, keeps the water clear. 

If you're interested in learning more about the crocodiles, many tours conclude with a visit to the Crocodile Nursery, where young and injured crocodiles are cared for until they are ready to return to the wild.
