This immersive experience invites you to discover the delicate and mesmerizing art of Ebru marbling on fabric, a centuries-old Turkish craft that transforms floating pigments into intricate patterns. Traditionally used to decorate manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, Ebru has been cherished in Turkey since the Ottoman era, blending artistic expression with meditative practice.

Set in a tranquil Istanbul gallery, this hands-on session begins with an introduction to Ebru’s rich history and cultural significance. You’ll observe a live demonstration by a master artist, learning the techniques of working with fabric—how to prepare the base, control the pigments, and create balanced, flowing designs. Using natural earth pigments, you’ll craft a vibrant scarf, watching colors float, swirl, and settle into intricate shapes before being transferred onto fabric. By the end of the session, you’ll take home a unique wearable piece of Turkish heritage.

Unlike traditional paper marbling, this experience explores the delicate and complex process of marbling on fabric, a technique requiring precision, patience, and expert guidance. Textiles absorb pigments differently than paper, making the final result even more dynamic and unpredictable—each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. Guided by Nesi, a master Ebru artist, you’ll learn the secrets of adapting marbling techniques to textiles, controlling color diffusion, and achieving stunning, fluid designs. Beyond the hands-on workshop, you’ll also gain insight into Ebru’s deeper symbolism—how patterns like “battal” (stone), “nightingale’s nest,” and floral motifs reflect nature, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of life. A graduate of Mimar Sinan University, she trained under master calligraphers and marblers, refining her expertise in both traditional and contemporary applications of Ebru. With over two decades of experience, Nesime has been leading workshops at her Galatart Ebru Workshop in Istanbul since 2009. Her passion for preserving Turkish marbling has led her to explore its many forms, from bookbinding to fabric design. She has perfected the intricate process of transferring Ebru onto textiles, creating wearable and decorative artworks that honor this historic craft. Through her engaging workshops, Nesime not only teaches technique but also shares the rich symbolism and meditative qualities of Ebru, ensuring that each participant leaves with a deeper appreciation for this living tradition.

Italy

Glide across the Venice lagoon on Davide’s vintage wooden motorboat to visit two iconic islands where craft has been a daily language for generations. First stop: Murano. Inside a family-run furnace, you’ll watch glass gather, breathe, and turn under the maestro’s tools as Davide explains and interprets techniques and guild lore. There’s time for questions and a walkthrough of the family's showrooms, where fire-shaped pieces reflect the lineage of Murano craft.

Then Burano greets you with painted facades and the fine geometry of lace. You’ll see artisans in small ateliers — needle, pillow, and pattern at work — then wander short lanes toward the bell tower and waterfront, pausing for color-drenched photographs. Throughout, Davide sets the rhythm — efficient but unhurried — ensuring you catch both the big and little aspects of island life and tradition. In 3.5 hours, you return to Venice with context, craft, and a bright memory of the lagoon’s makers.

What makes this special is Davide’s access — and how he weaves people, place and craft into a living story. In Murano, his connection with a local glassmaking family brings you onto the factory work floor, close enough to feel the heat as a maestro gathers, rolls and opens glass. Techniques are explained and interpreted in plain language, and you're invited to watch long enough to notice the unspoken choreography of the steps.

Across the lagoon, Burano has its own rhythm. Davide’s mother’s family is from there, and the stories he shares are personal. Depending on the day, you may even meet one of his family members. These encounters are grounded in human relationships.

He’s always observing, camera in hand, drawn to fleeting scenes of everyday life.

Erica De Ponti is a licensed guide with over 20 years of experience and a deep love for old-time Milan. She has written essays for photographic books on the subject, teaches art history at the Università della Terza Età, and works as both an editor and press officer. Her approach blends historical insight with a sharp sense for stories worth telling.

Portugal

This hands-on workshop offers rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts: Bisalhães black pottery, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a small mountain village north of Vila Real, just a few remaining artisans keep this tradition alive.

You’ll step into a rustic, working atelier to see how local earth, fire, and ancestral technique come together to form these matte-black pieces. After a live demonstration of traditional hand-molding, you’ll take a seat at the wheel to shape your own, guided step-by-step by the master potter.

If weather allows, you’ll also witness the outdoor firing process—where pine needles and broom branches are used to stoke the open-air kiln. This method turns raw clay into its distinct black finish, a transformation unchanged for generations. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.

In Bisalhães, black clay pottery has been shaped by hand for centuries—but today, only a few master potters still practice this endangered art. This experience offers rare, personal access to one of them, in a setting far from the commercial workshops of larger towns.

Inside the workshop, you’ll learn how the clay is prepared, shaped and dried using traditional tools—some passed down through families—and how the outdoor kilns, fueled by pine and broom, are smothered post-fire with moss, earth and sand to lock in the signature matte-black finish. The method is entirely natural: no glaze, no paint, just earth and fire.

Under the artisan’s guidance, you’ll craft a piece using age-old techniques, then watch as it’s hardened by fire into a singular object. First documented in 1709 and inscribed in 2016 on UNESCO’s Urgent Safeguarding List, this practice is at risk—but alive. This is a direct act of preservation, a moment to connect to a cultural practice shaped by place, patience, touch.

The breathtaking beauty of a woman in a kimono is a memory many travelers carry home from Japan. Yet the kimono cannot be worn without its equally elegant counterpart, the obi—a belt-like accessory whose colors and patterns enhance the garment. In this hands-on experience, French fashion designer Clémentine opens up her world, sharing deep knowledge of kimono and obi through a relaxed creative workshop.

She’ll take you on a journey through time, explaining the evolution of these garments and how advances in textile manufacturing shaped their design. You'll explore different types of kimono, learn about their occasions and etiquette, and see up-close the textiles — brocade, silk, hand-dyed patterns — that make each piece distinct.

Then comes the transformation: choosing from Clémentine’s collection of vintage obi, you’ll design your own modern accessory — a pouch that breathes new life into traditional materials, letting you carry a piece of Japan with you.

While kimono remain an important part of Japanese tradition, many are worn only once — at weddings or formal events — then stored away and forgotten. Clémentine’s workshop honors these garments and the artisans behind them by giving the fabric new purpose.

Her shop is rooted in upcycling, but it’s more than sustainability: it’s about artful transformation. She selects obi with patterns too bold or ornate for modern daily wear, and turns them into striking, functional accessories. In doing so, she reconnects this heritage craft with everyday life.

A trained designer with a deep reverence for Japanese textiles, Clémentine approaches each piece with care. She believes this process honors the artisans who created the textiles, allowing their art to be seen, admired, and used once again. By guiding you to create something beautiful and personal, she invites you to participate in a living tradition — one shaped by both preservation and creativity.

Clementine has a background in fashion design and has become an expert in Japanese traditional textiles while living in Japan for over a decade. She will welcome you into her lovely studio located in a quiet Kyoto neighborhood, where you can enjoy learning, making, conversing, and discovering at your own pace.

Chile

Join a Chilean chef and restaurateur in this immersive and authentic culinary journey in Santiago, Chile. This 5-hour private food experience starts at the city's oldest markets—Mercado Central and Mercado La Vega—and ends over a home-cooked meal at the chef's apartment in the exclusive El Golf neighborhood. 

To start, Cristian "Tatán" Mellado will walk you through Santiago's meat, fresh produce, and fish markets while explaining their history. After this walking tour, you will stop by the Bellavista and Isidora Goyenechea districts and learn about the gastronomical scene—this is an opportunity to pick up restaurant recommendations. Upon arrival at Tatán's apartment, you will receive a welcome cocktail with oysters (or equivalent) from the Pacific Ocean. This flows into appetizers and a wine tasting before starting the gourmet cooking class. The menu includes Ceviche de Reineta as a starter and Charquicán (a dish from the Mapuche culture) as the main course followed by dessert.

Bou Inania Madrasa

For centuries, the Ponte Vecchio has captivated visitors with its unique array of jewelry shops. Meanwhile, Piazza della Signoria has remained the political heart of Florence, hosting significant events and showcasing monumental art and architecture. Things to look for:
1 - Ponte Vecchio's Timeless Appeal: This medieval stone bridge has spanned Florence's Arno River for almost 700 years. Its three shallow arches support a row of shops, creating a stunning reflection over the waters. The bridge has withstood floods, wars, and the passage of time, serving as a merchant's stage and a site of historical events, including the tragic murder of Buondelmonte de’ Buondelmonti in 1216, which fueled the feud between the Guelphs and Ghibellines​​. Today, the Ponte Vecchio is renowned for its fine jewelry stores and other offerings.

2 - Transformation Through Time: Initially, the Ponte Vecchio housed various trades, but by 1422, the Guild of Butchers monopolized the shops, turning the bridge into a market for meat, leather, and fish. This setup continued until the Medici era when Cosimo I de Medici, seeking to elevate the bridge's status, replaced the butchers with gold merchants, a tradition that endures to this day​​.

3 - A Political and Cultural Hub: Since the 14th century, Piazza della Signoria has been the focal point of Florentine political and social life. It houses the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, Neptune Fountain, and Loggia dei Lanzi, among other significant landmarks. 

4 - Symbolism and Artistry: Piazza della Signoria features several iconic sculptures, including a copy of Michelangelo's David, marking its original location. The Neptune Fountain, built to celebrate a Medici wedding, represents the family's ascent to power. The Loggia dei Lanzi, a fine example of Florentine Gothic architecture, displays notable sculptures like Benvenuto Cellini's "Perseus" and served as a stage for official ceremonies during the Republic era​​​​​​​​​​​​.

Ponte Vecchio, P.ZZA Signoria

Catania's fish market, known locally as "A Piscaria," is the heart of the city. It’s loud, it’s surprising, it’s humbling, it’s real. Colours, fragrances, and market place shouting.

A visit to Catania's fish market allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, adding a unique and flavorful element to your Sicily travels.

The fish market comes to life in the early morning, around 5.30 a.m., when the fishmongers arrive. But from around 7.30 a.m., the market offers a more calm environment; it's easier to roam among the booths, and soak up the environment.

Catania Fish Market

Mafra Palace, an architectural masterpiece of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, stands majestically in the town of Mafra, just outside Lisbon. Built in the early 18th century by King João V, this palace was originally intended to fulfill a vow after the birth of his first child. Today, it is one of Portugal’s most remarkable historical monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for its lavish design, extensive library, and impressive basilica. Mafra Palace has also gained literary fame through Nobel Laureate José Saramago’s novel, Baltasar and Blimunda, which immortalizes the palace’s history and symbolism in Portuguese culture.

Highlights of Mafra Palace:

1. Richly decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian wood, and intricate frescos, the palace embodies Baroque grandeur in every hall. Visitors can explore the vast royal apartments, sumptuous rooms, and corridors lined with artworks, giving a sense of the lavish lifestyle of Portugal’s 18th-century royals.

2. The Mafra Library is often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Housing over 36,000 volumes, including rare books and ancient manuscripts, it is notable for its Rococo interior and the colony of bats kept to protect the books from insects.

3. The palace basilica is a marvel of Baroque architecture, with twin bell towers, each housing a carillon of 92 bells, one of the largest of its kind. Inside, the basilica’s Italian marble and ornate altar are breathtaking, and its six historic organs are still used for concerts today.

4. In the palace gardens, visitors can stroll through manicured hedges, fountains, and shaded pathways, providing a peaceful escape amid the lush greenery, much as it was used by the royal family centuries ago.

Tip: Arrive early to avoid crowds, and take a moment to enjoy the views of the palace from the courtyard. Also, photography enthusiasts should bring a wide-angle lens to capture the full scope of this architectural marvel!

Explore Mafra Palace

Portugal’s Almendres Cromlech, located near Évora in the Alentejo region, is one of the largest and oldest megalithic sites in Europe. Dating back over 7,000 years, this Neolithic stone circle predates Stonehenge and offers a fascinating glimpse into Portugal’s prehistoric past. Surrounded by rolling hills and cork oak forests, this mystical site remains a place of intrigue, believed to have been used for astronomical observations, rituals, and social gatherings.


1. Nearly 100 standing stones, arranged in elliptical and circular formations, some engraved with ancient symbols and carvings.

2. Stunning natural setting, with the Alentejo countryside providing a peaceful and remote atmosphere, ideal for quiet reflection and photography.

3. Alignment with the solstices, suggesting that the site may have been an early astronomical observatory or a place for seasonal rituals.

4. Nearby Almendres Menhir, a single monolithic stone standing over 3 meters (10 feet) tall, likely connected to the cromlech’s spiritual or ceremonial function.

5. Lack of crowds, offering a more intimate experience compared to other megalithic sites, allowing visitors to explore freely and feel a deeper connection to the past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunrise or sunset for a magical experience with soft golden light. The site is accessible via a dirt road, so a car with good clearance is recommended. Combine your visit with a trip to Évora, a UNESCO-listed city rich in history and culture.

Almendres Cromlech

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

600 meters off the coast of Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island offers visitors a unique blend of botanical gardens, historical ruins, and crystal-clear waters. Whether you're a nature lover, history enthusiast, or simply in search of tranquility, Lokrum invites exploration and relaxation. Why visit:
 
1: Botanical Bliss: Begin your adventure in the island's renowned Botanical Garden, home to exotic plants from around the globe. Established in 1959, this garden not only dazzles with its flora but also serves as a haven for peacocks and rabbits.
 
2: Royal Retreat: Don't miss the Benedictine Monastery ruins and the enchanting Maximilian’s summer house. These historical sites offer a glimpse into Lokrum's regal past, where legends of curses and royal escapades abound. The monastery's cloister and the lush gardens surrounding the summer house are especially captivating.
 
3: The Dead Sea: Lokrum's unique salt-filled lake, known as the "Dead Sea," is a marvel for swimmers and nature enthusiasts. This small, serene lake offers a safe and unique swimming experience, mirroring the buoyancy found in the actual Dead Sea.
 
4: Panoramic Perch: Climb to Fort Royal Castle for breathtaking views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea. Built by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, this highest point on the island is the perfect spot for panoramic photographs and a moment of reflection on the beauty below.
 
5: Game of Thrones Magic: Fans of the series will delight in visiting the island's GoT Visitor Center. Housed in the Benedictine Monastery, it features an Iron Throne replica and exhibits on the show’s filming, which took place on Lokrum and in nearby Dubrovnik.
 
Tickets can be purchased at the Port of Dubrovnik or online at Lokrum's official website. The best time to visit is during the spring or early fall, with pleasant weather, and less crowds.

Enchanted: Lokrum Island

If you're looking for an unconventional neighborhood with art galleries, parks to hang out in, and lots of young, trendy people, Newtown is the place for you. I basically spend all my weekends there, drinking coffee, going to book clubs, working at the community kitchen Lentil as Anything, and having a beer at one of the lively bars at night. 

Australians love vintage – which makes Newtown the heaven for vintage clothes, cameras, vinyl records, and much more. I’ve got some new sandals, a polaroid camera, and jewelry, all unique pieces at an amazing price. Worth the hype!

You can easily get there by train, it's just a ride from Town Hall, or simply stay a few days in one of the hostels in Newtown.

Self-drive tour along the west coast of Lagos, where rugged cliffs meet turquoise waters and pristine nature awaits. This journey will take you through stunning coastal landscapes, culminating in a visit to the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.

3. Continue into this expansive nature park, which stretches from the Algarve to the Alentejo region. This protected area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare coastal plants and nesting seabirds. Drive along the coastal roads, stopping at viewpoints to soak in views.

4. Conclude your tour at Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. Known as “the End of the World” in medieval times, the cape boasts a windswept cliffside view and a historic lighthouse that guides ships through these fabled waters. Arrive at sunset for a stunning display.

5. Along the way, stop in quaint fishing villages like Carrapateira or Sagres, where you can explore local markets, try fresh seafood, and experience the slow pace of traditional Portuguese coastal life.

The hiking trail from Fira to Oia is one of Santorini’s most iconic experiences, offering a breathtaking journey through stunning landscapes, traditional villages, and dramatic caldera views. This 10-kilometer (6-mile) trail connects two of the island’s most picturesque towns and immerses you in Santorini’s natural beauty and charm. Whether you’re chasing sunrise or sunset, the trail is a must for adventurers and photography enthusiasts. 
1. Spectacular Caldera Views accompany you throughout the hike, with endless vistas of whitewashed villages perched on cliffs and the sparkling Aegean Sea below. 
2. Pass through traditional villages like Firostefani and Imerovigli, where you can admire charming Cycladic architecture and tranquil chapels. 
3. The trail offers diverse terrain, including paved paths, cobblestone streets, and rugged dirt trails, keeping the journey engaging and dynamic.
