Have you ever wondered about the daily life of an archaeologist and what they do behind the scenes? This workshop lifts the lid on the care that goes into the preservation of archaeological finds. And doing so in Cusco places you within one of the most archaeologically layered regions of the Andes.

Hosted by local archaeologist Delsi and her sister, Yessika, you gather at a workstation around an assortment of artifacts sourced from the valleys around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You learn about the pre-Colombian cultures of the region and how archaeologists use identifiers to place ceramic relics into historical contexts. Delsi then guides you through identifying ceramic types and approximating the age of vessels using simple metrics. You learn about excavation techniques in the region and how finds are cleaned, identified, and registered.

After lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum, where the knowledge gained earlier provides a new lens for reading the objects on display.

This archaeologist-led workshop offers rare access beyond the display case, allowing you to discover ancient pottery techniques used in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You'll hold centuries-old fragments in your palm and use a microscope to identify materials used by pre-Colombian cultures in the manufacture of pottery. This may lead to a discussion of how pigments were produced for decoration and how vessels were used. From even a small fragment of pottery, you learn how archaeologists determine which part of a vessel it came from, estimate its size, and infer its function using systematic methods. In some cases, there is time to reassemble fragments, revealing how broken pieces come back into form through careful analysis.

After a local lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum with Delsi, applying what you’ve learned to objects on display. This museum visit, with an archaeologist at your side, allows for deeper engagement with Cusco’s archaeological heritage.

Irish-born Daniel O’Shea and Peruvian-born Delsi Espinoza are the co-founders of an archaeology venture that contributes to preserving the cultural heritage of Cusco and Sacred Valley. The couple have teamed up on archaeological projects across Cusco's Southern and Sacred Valleys. They run conservation, artifact registry, and site mapping projects — primarily designed for volunteers and students. Daniel and Delsi’s Fernwayer experiences are uniquely curated for curious explorers seeking to step into the shoes of an archaeologist for a day.

Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience alongside her sister, Yessika. Since graduating from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014, Delsi has led regional excavation projects, maintenance programs, and educational initiatives. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu.

Known for its slow rhythms, Berber-architecture, artisan traditions, rugged landscapes, La Alpujarra is one of the most culturally layered corners of Andalusia.

Visitors come for its quiet beauty, local craftsmanship, and the chance to wander through a village that still reflects centuries of rural life.

Capileira is known for its handmade woven textiles, or jarapas, produced in small family workshops that carry on an old Alpujarran craft tradition. The village and its surroundings are also sources of local cheeses, honey, and cured meats. This area forms part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its blend of cultural heritage and natural landscape. On the first half-day, you’ll learn about the ancestral art of sourdough breadmaking, delving into the significance of wheat in ancient Greece and its connection to Demeter. Through a mindful practice, you’ll prepare the dough, engaging with the wheat, your senses and the land of Athens. The bread is left to ferment overnight.

This hands-on workshop offers rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts: Bisalhães black pottery, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a small mountain village north of Vila Real, just a few remaining artisans keep this tradition alive.

You’ll step into a rustic, working atelier to see how local earth, fire, and ancestral technique come together to form these matte-black pieces. After a live demonstration of traditional hand-molding, you’ll take a seat at the wheel to shape your own, guided step-by-step by the master potter.

If weather allows, you’ll also witness the outdoor firing process—where pine needles and broom branches are used to stoke the open-air kiln. This method turns raw clay into its distinct black finish, a transformation unchanged for generations. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.

In Bisalhães, black clay pottery has been shaped by hand for centuries—but today, only a few master potters still practice this endangered art. This experience offers rare, personal access to one of them, in a setting far from the commercial workshops of larger towns.

Inside the workshop, you’ll learn how the clay is prepared, shaped and dried using traditional tools—some passed down through families—and how the outdoor kilns, fueled by pine and broom, are smothered post-fire with moss, earth and sand to lock in the signature matte-black finish. The method is entirely natural: no glaze, no paint, just earth and fire.

Under the artisan’s guidance, you’ll craft a piece using age-old techniques, then watch as it’s hardened by fire into a singular object. First documented in 1709 and inscribed in 2016 on UNESCO’s Urgent Safeguarding List, this practice is at risk—but alive. Whether you're looking to relax, take a leisurely stroll, or capture stunning nature photography, Jnan Sbil Gardens provides a refreshing escape.

1. The grand entrance, framed by towering palm trees and traditional Moroccan gates, sets the stage for a tranquil walk through lush greenery and colorful flower beds.

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Exo Gonia Village

The Alhambra in Granada is a stunning example of Moorish architecture and one of Spain's most iconic historical sites. This vast complex, which includes the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Generalife gardens, served as the royal residence of the Nasrid sultans. Walking through its intricately decorated halls and serene gardens offers a glimpse into the splendor of the last Islamic kingdom in Spain.

Megalochori Village is one of Santorini’s most charming and picturesque settlements, offering a serene escape from the island’s busier spots. Known for its narrow cobblestone streets, traditional Cycladic architecture, and vibrant history, this quaint village is a delightful blend of cultural heritage and modern-day hospitality. Megalochori is a hidden gem where time seems to slow down, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and exploration. 
1. The village is filled with whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-draped courtyards, and blue-domed churches, creating a postcard-perfect setting for leisurely strolls. 
2. Its iconic bell towers, such as the one at the entrance of the village square, are among the most photographed landmarks in Santorini. 
3. Megalochori is home to historic mansions and cave houses, many of which have been beautifully restored into boutique accommodations and wineries. 
4. The village is a hub for traditional wineries, where visitors can sample local Assyrtiko wines and learn about Santorini’s winemaking traditions. 
5. Quiet alleys and peaceful squares offer a glimpse into authentic village life, with friendly locals and inviting taverns serving fresh Greek cuisine.

Ethiopia

In Lalibela, I am moved by the devotion and faith of pilgrims who have walked for weeks, and hundreds of miles across the country, to celebrate Genna - Ethiopia’s Christmas - on January 7. Here, the year is 2011, since Ethiopia still observes a pre-Julian calendar. I am immediately taken in by the idea of being 7 years younger, albeit for a fleeting moment.

Pilgrims arrive early - between midnight to 5 am -  to get a prized standing spot inside the tiny but iconic Biete Gyorgis. As I watch pilgrims read from their bibles, often from inside their shroud, using a candle or torch, I realize I’ve never seen such fervor in worship.

By 6:30 am, Biete Giyorgis, the iconic rock-hewn church of Lalibela, has no more standing space, so these pilgrims huddle outside and around trees and pray from their copies of the Bible, guided by the chanting from the church, that fills the air with spirituality. It’s poetic and beautiful.

Faith

Balos Lagoon is a breathtakingly beautiful beach on the northwestern coast of Crete, known for its turquoise waters, pink-tinged sands, and striking natural scenery. Surrounded by rugged hills, this idyllic spot is accessible by a scenic hike or a boat ride, making it a perfect destination for those seeking an escape into nature’s finest.
1. The lagoon’s shallow turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and ideal for families with children.
2. Its unique pink sand, created by crushed shells, adds a surreal touch to the beach.
3. The area offers a stunning contrast between the vivid water, white sand, and dramatic rocky terrain.
4. Visitors can hike down to the beach, enjoying panoramic views along the way.
5. For a more leisurely approach, ferries from Kissamos provide easy access to this natural paradise.
