Japan

Step inside a working Buddhist temple in Osaka and spend several hours following the rhythms of a monk’s day. You’ll meet your hosts - a practicing monk who also works as an architect, and Zane, who has spent ten years in Japan studying religious and cultural traditions. Then you’ll change into the traditional robes of a monk and begin a series of mindful rituals.

First, a guided meditation and the practice of shakyo: hand-copying sutras in the form of kanji characters using brush and ink. This is a daily ritual for monks, intended to steady the mind before service. Outside, you’ll assist in sweeping the temple grounds - a brief, meaningful act of service and discipline.

Midday, you’ll share a shojin ryori meal: a simple, seasonal vegetarian lunch prepared in the Buddhist tradition. Zane provides translation, insights and context throughout.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive either a goshuin (temple stamp) or omamori (amulet)—a small marker of your day as a monk in Osaka.

Most introductions to monastic life in Japan take place in rural retreats. This temple is an active religious site in the grid of central Osaka. You’ll speak with the monks about their lives, explore the overlaps and tensions between secular and spiritual paths, and observe how Buddhist tradition is preserved and adapted in a modern context.

The experience is co-led by a temple monk who also works as an architect. He is passionate about blending modern design with tradition and along with his wife, who was born into a temple family, works to promote Japanese culture by creating various events such as tea ceremonies. 

Your co-host is Zane, a resident of Japan for 10 years originally from New York. In this four-hour walking tour, you’ll venture into the labyrinthine streets of Granada’s Albaicín. Here, remnants of the Nasrid world remain preserved in silence — from a hidden palace tucked behind whitewashed walls, to the best-conserved hammam from Islamic Spain, to miradores (viewpoints) that frame the Alhambra like a memory suspended in time. This is Mexico’s story told through three spaces within Chapultepec, the great forest in Mexico City — a journey through its origins, empires and modern vision.

You begin at National Museum of Anthropology, one of the world’s most remarkable cultural institutions. Beneath its vast courtyard “paraguas” canopy — a concrete umbrella supported by a single column — you walk through galleries that hold Mexico’s ancient imagination and Indigenous legacy: Mexica calendar stone, Zapotec urns, Mayan reliefs.

If you choose Chapultepec Castle instead of Museo Tamayo, Andrea will arrange to visit this first — so you can make the climb while the hill is still cool and shaded.

Built in the late 18th century, it has served many lives — first as colonial palace, then as residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire, and later as official home of Mexico’s presidents. After your morning exploration through Mexico’s past and modern expressions, Andrea will take you to a restaurant for an extensive lunch where you'll get to try various dishes representing some of the best of Mexico City cuisine.

From there, you visit the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a remarkable insitution that preserves the experimental studio and public mission of David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s great muralists. Housed in the artist’s former home and workshop, the building still bears the traces of his process — large-scale murals, technical studies, and the curved walls designed for his “Polyangular” method, meant to let art move with the viewer.

You walk the line between art and activism, between creation and conviction — a fitting conclusion to the day.

The afternoon seeks to tie the day’s themes together: Mexico’s art as memory, power, and reinvention. Madrid to Porto Between Lands

A road trip itinerary from Madrid to Porto via Toledo and Galicia, blending culture, drives, locals.

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

Istria, Croatia, is home to the enchanting Grožnjan Artists’ Village, a medieval hilltop town transformed into a vibrant hub for painters, sculptors, and musicians.
