Mexico

In this studio visit you'll meet an architect who is playing with ways to use objects the city leaves behind — cement blocks, plastic crates, shattered tiles, and other things that often slip into invisibility. 

Inspired by his background in environmental design, Javier transforms such fragments into sculptural furniture such as chairs, tables and shelves. Each piece is a constellation of temporalities and forgotten stories, a collection and reconfiguration of objects found throughout CDMX, which Javier sources himself.

Javier will welcome you to his studio and share his process, sharing how walking, gathering, and assembling have become methods to map the city and its leftovers. He'll discuss what his design work says about Mexico City, and also how he's approached this work in other cities such as London, where he's been an artist in residence. 

The experience offers a unique window into how design can be responsive, situated and radically resourceful, as well as being sculptural.

This exclusive experience offers rare access to Javier's studio in central Mexico City, where objects in various stages of development reveal the intuitive and speculative nature of his work. Every piece is singular and made with wild, non-standard measurements and joined using simple, reversible techniques. More than a studio tour, this visit is a conversation on contemporary design, ecological imagination, and the aesthetics of reuse — a slow, thoughtful look at the anatomy of urban space through its overlooked material life.

Javier Guzmán Cervantes is an artist, designer, and builder based in Mexico City. His work explores residual realities in the contemporary metropolis, developing domestic infrastructures, furniture, and structural systems through low-tech and autonomous processes out of debris, residues, and material fragments gathered through urban exploration. In this process, he engages with concepts such as degrowth, living otherwise, and post-development, questioning the role of art, design and construction in relation to sustainability and community.

Through direct contact with the city, Javier's practice transforms discarded objects into local resources, creating not only tactical approaches to construction but also serving as traces of life and local processes within the city: revealing stories.

In 2023, he founded Ex Soup, an art and design experiment based in Mexico City that uses walking, urban wandering, and low-tech methods to collect and reassemble the city’s remains.

Explore two of Florence’s most iconic churches on a journey through painting, sculpture, and architecture that reveals how two great preaching orders shaped the city’s spiritual and artistic legacy.

Santa Croce, the Franciscan basilica, houses masterpieces by Cimabue, Giotto, Donatello, Brunelleschi and others, and holds the tombs of Galileo, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli. Its vast spaces and narrative frescoes reflect a humble, human-focused approach to faith.

After a relaxing break with a sandwich and a glass of wine, we’ll cross the heart of Florence to reach Santa Maria Novella. This Dominican church is a treasure of early Renaissance art, featuring works by Giotto, Brunelleschi, and Ghirlandaio. The building itself, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, exudes an air of solemnity and grandeur, inviting visitors into a space where art and devotion intertwine. Over the centuries, it has maintained its role as a pivotal cultural and religious landmark of Venice. 

We will end the tour at a Traghetto stop where you can choose to get a gondola or a water taxi back to your hotel -- or simply wander back on foot.

Experience the elegance of the Nani Bernardo Palace, designed by Architect Vittoria in 1550. Marvel at its harmonious aspect, enriched by a valuable hidden Venetian garden. Should Nani Bernardo be unavailable, the alternative stop is Ca' Rezzonico Palace, another marvel of Venetian architecture - or a similar equally stunning palace, specially selected by Lucia. 

This is a private palace that is accessible only by appointment and with the help of our connection with Lucia. 

Designed by Architect Vittoria, on commission from the Bernardo family, the Palace was built in 1550. 
Around 200 years ago, the current owner's ancestors added a new Italian garden to the palace, demolishing a series of houses on the side closest to the Grand Canal in the process and gave the Palazzo Nani Bernardo an entirely new, and harmonious aspect that is still evident today.

Another element is the really valuable back garden, very nice and extraordinarily extended in length, made during the eighteenth century. In case Nani Bernardo is booked out for a private event, we will replace this stop with Ca. Rezzonico Palace or an equally stunning palace.

Step into a  bakery (Tonolo) for pastry or a fish market that the guide frequents and talk to the owner. Or step into Small Caps, a remarkable design and printmaking shop to see outstanding prints that beautifully represent the essence of Venice. 

Campo Santa Margherita serves as a vibrant community hub surrounded by historic buildings. This courtyard, evolving from a church front to a university auditorium, is alive with restaurants, bars, shops, and a weekday market, drawing locals, students, and vendors. It reflects the diverse community spirit, distanced from Venice's main tourist spots but accessible by foot due to the city's no-car rule. The area's rich history is highlighted by a dragon motif, commemorating Saint Margaret, and remnants of its past as a fish market, showcasing its ongoing transformation and unique charm.

Our first stop takes you to the Squero San Trovaso. Explore the inner workings of the boatyard and witness the intricate craftsmanship behind the iconic gondolas. Gain a deeper understanding of the traditional techniques involved in creating these Venetian masterpieces.

This is one of the last remaining boatyards of Venice. Typically hard to access since it's a working facility and tours are not provided without prior notice. It's also essential to have someone local to interpret the workings of the place for you. [Note: There are times when the Squero is closed for maintenance. In these instances, Lucia will ensure that you see the Squero from the outside and explain the workings in the best possible way.]

DAY 3 – UNDERGROUND CITIES AND THE SOUTH | Your final day dives deep—both literally and historically. A guided day trip takes you south, into the vast subterranean cities that once sheltered entire populations. From there, you’ll move through Pigeon Valley and the quiet streets of Ortahisar, where everyday life moves to ancient rhythms. The afternoon leads you through the soft palette of the Rose and Red Valleys, closing the journey with views that feel both geological and emotional in their weight.
WHERE TO STAY IN CAPPADOCIA | Most travelers base themselves in Göreme or Uçhisar, two villages with easy access to sunrise viewpoints and valley hikes. Göreme is lively and central, with cave hotels tucked into the cliffs, while Uçhisar offers a quieter pace and panoramic views. If you’re seeking charm, walkability, and good access to experiences, either makes a beautiful base—just be sure to book early, especially if you’re hoping to see balloons from your terrace. Most boutique hotels in both Göreme and Uçhisar offer on-site dining or are a short walk from local restaurants serving Anatolian dishes.
