This full-day route moves through the Puuc hill country, a region shaped by low hills, limited surface water and a demanding landscape. You begin at Uxmal, the best-known city of the Puuc region and UNESCO World Heritage site. Built between the 7th and 10th centuries, Uxmal is known for its well-preserved architecture and refined decorative style. Smooth lower walls are topped with intricate mosaic façades and repeated masks of Chaac, the rain god — architecture shaped by both belief and the need to manage scarce water through underground cisterns.

From Uxmal, you continue to Sayil, a smaller, less crowded Maya site with dense residential and administrative structures. Its palace complex and façades feature columns and geometric latticework, suggesting a narrative tied to power, warfare, and local tradition.

Lunch in Muna, a town shaped by both colonial and Indigenous histories, is followed by a visit to a freshwater cenote, where you can swim and cool off before returning to Mérida.

Many cenotes in this area are partially covered. Tree roots descend through openings above, reaching down into clear freshwater. Entering into this cooler, quieter space shaped by stone, water, and time - creates a surreal and beautiful effect of descending into another world. 

Cenotes are common in northern Yucatán, but those found along the Puuc route are less crowded and often feel more enclosed and intimate. Stopping here after visiting Uxmal and Sayil connects the region’s architecture back to its most basic requirement: water.

You begin in the beautiful hills of the Puuc region at Oxkintok, an ancient Maya site known for its distinctive architecture, including a hieroglyphic stairway and underground tunnel system known as Tzat Tun Tzat, or “the Labyrinth,” which can sometimes be entered depending on conditions. Compared to better-known Puuc sites, Oxkintok remains quieter and less restored, allowing space to observe its layout and features without crowds.

From there, you continue to a cave, where ceramics and burials remain in situ. Zac explains how natural caves functioned within Maya culture — as ritual spaces, burial sites, and places closely connected to the natural and spiritual world.

The day concludes with lunch at a traditional restaurant, followed by time to swim at Cenote San Tito, before returning to Mérida.

Although Oxkintok lacks the single monumental pyramid found at larger Maya sites, its labyrinthine plazas, epic entrance arch, and underground structures are woven uniquely into the surrounding landscape. The place feels markedly different from more visited Puuc centers, offering the rare chance to spend time at a Maya city in  tranquility.

The visit continues at a group of cenotes located on land associated with a small, long-established Maya household. Access is private and requires prior coordination with the owners, something visitors aren’t able to arrange independently. This allows for a quieter, more respectful encounter with the landscape.

Bertie, an English Sommelier, and Aby, an Argentine chef, are a Buenos Aires-based couple dedicated to sharing food, wine, and excellent company. Aby has been cooking traditional Argentine food since she was a child — helping at family gatherings — and Bertie has worked as a professional sommelier since 2008.

Chile

This full-day photographic excursion whisks you away to salty lagoons and a traditional Atacameño town as yet untouched by tourism. Besides learning landscape photography tips and tricks under the eye of a professional photographer, you will float in a saline lake and learn the geological importance of the region's ecosystem.

The day starts at Cejar Lagoon where the high salinity carries you across the surface of the lake without needing to stroke or kick. Swimming is optional yet highly recommended. After drying off, you will visit the Tebenquinche Lagoon to study the salt deposits from the lakeside. There is a relaxed lunch interlude in the town of Toconao where you will tour its main square and side streets. The afternoon concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat in the Chaxa Lagoon where flamingos wade in the shallows for shrimp. Throughout the day, photography remains the priority. 

This is an immersive exploration of the flora and fauna of the Salar de Atacama focusing on photography. Mirko—schooled in the geology and geography of the region—will impart knowledge sharpened by years of living in San Pedro de Atacama. He will explain the fragility of the ecosystems and provide insight into why the Indigenous Licanantay people consider the lagoons and volcanoes sacred. The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Majestic Heart of Mafra

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Despite this, it remains a very pleasant space, featuring a century-old irrigation noria, reflective water mirrors, a vegetable medicinal garden once used by monks, and a leafy park surrounding it.

Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community.
