This full-day photography excursion takes you to two contrasting natural wonders in the Atacama Desert of Chile: the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) and Rainbow Valley (Valle del Arcoiris). It is hosted by Mirko, a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and wildlife and a licensed guide. Upon leaving San Pedro de Atacama, Mirko will pull over at one of his favorite viewpoints to appreciate the sunrise over the Andes mountain range. While sipping coffee and sharing a breakfast of marraqueta bread rolls, you'll warm up your photography skills for the day by shooting the soft morning light. 

You will then explore the ravines and dunes of Moon Valley, coming to understand how it earned its name. After lunch at a local restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, you'll head to the Cordillera Domeyko to study the 3,000-year-old petroglyphs of Yerba Buenas before ending the day in the multi-colored Rainbow Valley.

Mirko has selected these two locations for their contrasts. The morning is spent exploring the salt mines, rugged amphitheaters, and sweeping dunes of Moon Valley where Mirko will explain the geological anomalies. By visiting early in the day, you're spared the inevitable afternoon crowds and have a more relaxed photographic experience. 

The afternoon takes place at two of the Atacama Desert's hidden treasures: Yerbas Buenas and Rainbow Valley. Yerbas Buenas (Hierbas Buenas) is an open-air exhibit of pre-Columbian rock carvings which provide insight into ancient Indigenous cultures. Mirko will explain the symbolism behind the petroglyphs and how these served as more than pretty pictures! In Rainbow Valley, the mountains are painted hues of red, green, white, yellow, and blue as a result of the oxidation of different mineral deposits over millions of years. You will arrive in time to catch the soft light of the waning sun. Lunch in town serves as a way to chat informally with Mirko.

This is a 3-hour exploration of Fes Medina with Omar Chennafi, a local cultural expert and renowned photographer. The tour offers a unique combination of discovering hidden corners of the Medina and mastering photography. As you meander through the Medina, Omar will guide you to unseen spots, perfect for capturing the essence of Fes Medina. You'll learn to adjust your camera settings as you transition from shadowed alleys to sunlit spaces, enhancing your photography skills in diverse lighting conditions. Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. In 2024, she published her first children’s book “Livro do Não”, which she illustrated with embroidery.

This photography experience takes place in the small coastal city of Concón, cocooned in the cliffs north of Valparaíso. You will explore three fragile ecosystems: the Concón Wetlands (Humedales de Concón), La Roca Oceánica (Ocean Rock), and the Dunes of Concón (Dunas de Concón). At each, you'll photograph flora and fauna under the mentorship of David, a local creative who grew up amid this windswept beauty spot. 

The experience takes place in the late afternoon and concludes with golden hour and sunset at the Dunes of Concón. Starting at the reed-lined wetlands, you'll encounter such birdlife as pelicans and perritos (white-backed stilts). Afterwards, you'll pause for coffee and empanada at Surf Beach (Playa La Boca). Frequented by local surfers—David included—this is an opportunity to flex your "moving target" skills! A small hike through the surreal dune system brings you to a vantage point from which you can take in panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Viña del Mar.

Concón is a hidden gem in Chile's Valparaíso Region. Inhabited by artists, families, young professionals, surfers, and gourmands, the city has a bohemian ambiance minus the bustle of its mother city. In this experience, you will visit the kinds of places locals hang out at weekends. From strolling along the wetlands—a beloved spot for birding and picnics—to cheering on surfers catching their first wave, this experience imbeds you into the village-like community. Considered the Gastronomic Capital of Chile, Concón is a foodie hub and you'll have the opportunity to sample a delicious empanada.

The experience culminates at the region's best-kept secret: the Dunes of Concón. Regardless of your photography level, the creative potential is endless and David will help you capture stunning images and shoot portraits. Curated as a photo walk, connecting with the wild setting and seeing Concón through his eyes is what makes this a truly special and unique experience.

Growing up amid the windswept dunes of Concón and the bohemian streets of Valparaíso kindled David's appreciation for photography, nature, and art. He graduated from the University of Playa Ancha and went on to work as a Software Engineer, while flexing his skills behind the lens. 

As a self-taught photographer, David has honed his talent working with both landscapes and portraiture. He has an experimental style and a keen eye for spotting easily-missed details He has a special ability to see the potential in the simple aspects of local reality and culture, and always seeks to capture them in an original way through his photography. He works with a Canon DSLR, using 50mm and 18-55mm lenses for regular shots and a 300mm lens to capture distant subjects with clarity and depth.

David draws upon his extensive archive of travel photography experiences while mentoring those visiting Valparaíso on how to capture the beauty of a location and why you should look beyond what's at eye level.

Italy

You’ll explore the scale and texture of this historic fortress, learning to compose both expansive architectural shots and intimate details, like sculpted portals and weathered stone surfaces.

From there, stroll into the lush expanse of Parco Sempione, tracing shaded pathways along romantic ponds, framed by treetops and classical sculptures. Emanuele encourages you to experiment with natural light, reflections in water, and the contrast between greenery and stone, revealing the park’s serene moments alongside its grandeur.

Testaccio is a historic district in central Rome, which naturally developed into the city’s first working-class neighborhood after Rome became Italy’s capital in 1871. This walk explores its layered history, from the former slaughterhouse—now a center for arts and innovation—to the Monte dei Cocci, an artificial hill from the 1st century CE made of broken oil amphorae unloaded at the nearby Emporio river port.

In the same neighborhood stands the Non-Catholic Cemetery, final resting place of poets, writers, and political thinkers such as Keats, Shelley, Gramsci, Camilleri, and Corso. Testaccio is also where Maria Montessori first tested her educational method, where Gabriella Ferri sang of Roman life, and where Elsa Morante and Pier Paolo Pasolini found inspiration for their stories.

The day continues in the home of Hafida and her family, where you’ll take part in a hands-on Argan oil workshop, before ending with a tasting of the oil, paired with organic honey and freshly baked bread by the Berber women in the family.

In the home of Hafida and her family, you’ll take part in the entire artisanal process of making this “liquid gold”—from cracking nuts to pressing kernels—guided by the Berber women who keep this tradition alive. Their knowledge has been passed down through generations, and you’ll see how each step of the process is rooted in rhythm and care.

Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.
