This evening experience explores Sintra as daylight fades, moving between two palaces that reflect distinct chapters of the town’s royal and Romantic history — including one opened exclusively for you after public hours.

You meet in the historic center in front of the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, one of Portugal’s oldest royal residences, identified by its twin conical chimneys. Visiting in the late afternoon, you move through rooms shaped by successive dynasties, tracing how the palace evolved from medieval court to Renaissance residence.

Afterward, you walk through Sintra’s cobbled streets to dinner at a traditional local restaurant. Rooted in Central Asia and cherished through centuries in the Ottoman Empire, Ebru has adorned everything from manuscripts to textiles, with each swirling pattern carrying stories of cultural heritage and symbolism. 

Guided by a master artist, you’ll first delve into the historical, cultural and spiritual depth behind Ebru’s fluid designs, then experience a live demonstration of foundational techniques. You'll learn how to hold the brush, apply vibrant natural pigments, and guide the floating colors into intricate shapes like "battal" (stone pattern) or "nightingale's nest." As the pigments dance on water, you’ll gain insight into the meanings woven into each pattern. Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

Iceland

On a snowy winter evening, we stand on a ridge and see the brightly-lit church through the mist ... an evocative but calming place. 

Very different from 1000 years ago as Vikings stood here and declared the laws of the land ... the oldest continuous two weeks in the summer parliament. People heard from their leaders, settled disputes and traded.

The best part of the Golden Circle circuit, Thingvellir National Park has hiking trails, waterfalls, summer cottages for the affluent (singer Björk has a home) and the Silfra fissure divers can explore between the American and Euroasian tectonic plates.

The sky is changing color. We should leave, we tell each other ... but we are drawn to the scenery like a moth to the flame.

Northern Mists

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Chile’s Rainbow Valley (Valle del Arcoíris) is a hidden geological wonder in the Atacama Desert, known for its vibrant, multicolored rock formations shaped by volcanic activity and mineral deposits over millions of years. Located about 90 km (56 miles) from San Pedro de Atacama, this surreal landscape offers a stunning contrast of reds, greens, yellows, and whites, making it a dream destination for photographers and nature lovers.

1. Colorful rock formations, created by iron (red), copper (green), sulfur (yellow), and calcium (white), offer a breathtaking natural display.

2. Scenic hiking trails allow visitors to explore the valley’s canyons, ridges, and unique geological features up close.

3. A remote, peaceful atmosphere, far from the tourist crowds, makes it a perfect spot for quiet exploration and photography.

4. Petroglyphs at Yerbas Buenas, located nearby, showcase ancient rock carvings made by indigenous Atacameño people, adding a cultural and historical dimension to the visit.

5. Panoramic views of the Domeyko Mountain Range, with its striking colors and jagged peaks, provide a spectacular backdrop for landscape photography.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and cooler temperatures. Due to the rough terrain, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended, and bringing water, sunscreen, and a hat is essential for the desert climate.
