João's grandfather planted most olive trees, but some have been here for thousands of years. Unlike the super-intensive olive groves common in the area, João's traditional approach relies solely on rainwater and eschews chemical use. This experience delves into the rich history of the farm and the meticulous process of olive oil production. Here, you visit Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for 18th-century murals that cover nearly every interior surface. Cesar explains the sanctuary’s murals — cited by UNESCO as a masterpiece of Mexican Baroque — and how they were created to guide meditation and spiritual practice. Nearby, you visit a contemporary art space where modern works are presented in dialogue with Atotonilco’s religious intensity. Lunch follows in a peaceful setting.

In the afternoon, you travel to Dolores Hidalgo and visit the parish church where Miguel Hidalgo issued the Grito de Dolores on September 16, 1810 — recognized as the start of Mexico’s independence movement. The town continues to express national identity through music, civic ritual and daily life. This is a scenic day hike across the Kik Plateau, perched at approximately 1,800 meters in the High Atlas Mountains. The trek offers sweeping views over terraced farmland, Lake Takerkoust, and distant peaks, including Mount Toubkal. 

Starting from Asni, the route winds through traditional Berber villages built from earth and stone, where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Along the way, you’ll stop for tea with a local family and enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the plateau, surrounded by olive groves and open sky.

This hike is ideal for those who’ve already seen the classic Atlas mountain routes and want to explore the landscape further while engaging with the local communities. 

The walk takes 5-6 hours with stops and is best done in spring or autumn, when the plateau is green and the light is sharp. Though not technically difficult, there are some steady inclines and exposed terrain, so good walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

The Kik Plateau offers an expansive, open landscape that contrasts with the steeper, more rugged trails of the central High Atlas. Its distinctive limestone outcroppings and gently undulating terrain give you a different kind of hiking experience—one defined by wide horizons and silence. From the plateau, you can take in panoramic views that stretch across the Haouz plains, Lake Takerkoust and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas.

You’ll walk through traditional Berber villages where adobe homes blend into the hillsides, and farming continues as it has for generations. Because the area sees fewer visitors than other Atlas trails, you’ll engage more directly with both the landscape and the people who live here. Spring is especially vibrant, with wildflowers and green pastures creating a vivid contrast to the dry plains below.
