This experience is shaped by Samuél Lopez-Barrantes’s way of reading history as a living, contested process rather than a closed chapter. A novelist and publisher with an MA in social theory and an MFA focused on the invention of historical narrative, he approaches the French Revolution through the ideas that emerged from it and the legacies of figures such as Rousseau, Voltaire, Louise Michel, and Guy Debord.

You’ll meet Samuél at the Colonne de Juillet, the large column in the center of Place de la Bastille.

Samuél has lived in Paris since 2010 as a novelist, musician, and literary tour guide. He holds an MA in social theory and an MFA in creative writing. He is a member of an indie rock band and the co-founder of an independent anglophone publisher in Paris.

He taught creative writing at the Sorbonne for five years before focusing on writing and leading historical walks on modernism, existentialism, and the Nazi Occupation of Paris. His first novel, Slim and the Beast, shares its name with his band, which has played extensively across Europe. Japan

This exploration of three lesser-known, evocative temple gardens in Kyoto offers a deep understanding of Japanese dry landscape design — where every stone, every line of raked gravel, carries meaning. Led by certified garden designer and author Ayumi Ikushima, the experience opens a thoughtful path into the philosophy and form of Zen gardens.

You’ll begin at the Crane and Turtle Garden where Ayumi introduces the foundational principles of Japanese garden design: symbolism, placement, interplay between nature and intention. 

A short walk takes you to a second temple where the garden reflects nature in miniature — a landscape composed to invite observation. You’ll learn to see and photograph the space mindfully.

Your final stop is a larger temple with a modern take on the tradition. A resident monk leads a meditation in view of the garden, offering how stillness and landscape are meant to interact. Then, you'll sit with Ayumi over tea and seasonal sweets to reflect and ask questions.

Enter the Spice Bazaar, still thick with scent and sound since 1660. Walk beneath its vaulted ceilings lined with saffron, sumac, and dried hibiscus sold by families who've worked the same stalls for generations. From there, slip behind the scenes into Tahtakale—one of Istanbul’s least understood but most vital trade arteries. This wholesale district still hums with activity: dried goods in sacks, hardware stacked in back alleys, and passageways filled with carts and crates. Climb toward one of Istanbul’s architectural high points—Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by imperial architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This was once a civic hub. Visit the former caravanserai, the soup kitchen (imaret) that fed the poor, and the medical clinic (darüşşifa) that served travelers and locals alike. As you move through the complex, you’ll see how Ottoman ideals of charity, urban planning, and commerce were woven together. Pause in the courtyard to take in panoramic views of the Golden Horn, then, if time allows, sit for helva and tea at a nearby terrace café still frequented by porters and theology students.

Süleymaniye is a beautiful site. The route will stay in the courtyard and grounds and the include the incredible views. Your guide will explain how this is also a working model of Ottoman urban design. Chile

Try your hand at making a "lucky" clay pig known as a Chanchito in the intimate studio of a local artist near Valparaíso. No prior experience is necessary and this 1.5-hour crafting experience is perfect for children and adults of all ages. 

Chanchitos are three-legged pigs which are typically made in the village of Pomaire in Chile. This art experience uses a special type of clay which is easy to work with and dries quickly, meaning the finished Chanchito is ready to take away on the day. Over the course of the workshop, you will hear the history of the Chanchito and their significance in Chile. 

You'll also enjoy an inspirational view of the Pacific Ocean from Marcela's private terrace while enjoying soft refreshments and local pastries. If you're lucky, you may even get to sample "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

This fun pottery activity is relaxed and accessible to novice sculptors and potters of all ages. Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

Classified among the prestigious Crus Classés de Graves, the châteaux in this area belong to an elite group of estates that helped define the identity of Pessac Léognan, a terroir known for refined reds and distinctive whites.
